I will be looking for gravesites in the 1700 and 1800's when in VA next week, but if I happen to find any of your relatives, I'll let you know. Shari

I do know there are a number of Alley's, Ellis' and Smoot's buried at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. On the list I do see a Charles Alley, but all I have is a name, no dates. I will be going there next week, so if I happen to find the tombstone, I will take a picture of it. Shari Eichler

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WBC.2ACI/413.475.480.579.1757.1753.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I am also researching this line. I am trying to find as many original documents as possible, trying to figure out everything. I have heavily relied on two documents written by Thomas Harding Ellis, as these were written in the mid-1840's and 50's, and he had completed lots of research, at least for his line of the family...David/John-1661/Charles/Josiah/Charles/Thomas Harding. These two documents are a letter found in Old Churches, written in 1857 and his Memorandum, written in 1849. I also have a copy of a letter written by Thomas Harding's brother Charles to a cousin who states that TH was in the process of updating the family info when it was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. In 1849, he states that John, the eldest son (of John and Susannah) married Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of Obadiah Smith and Mary Cocke. But in 1857, he states the same John married Elizabeth Ware, a relation of Baldwin and Ware Rockett... Is it possible this is the same Elizabeth, but with different last names? I can't find my dates right now, but is it possible that John had died and his wife, Elizabeth (Smith) remarried a Ware, so when TH referred to her in 1857, it was by her new name? Especially since he didn't state that Ware was her parents - just a "relation"? If anyone has any additional insight, I'd love to hear it! I haven't been able to determine yet which branch of John 1661 are my Ellises. So far, I have it traced to my gggg-grandfather, Hezekiah Ellis who was born in 1810 and married Mary Brown in 1829. They lived in Tuckahoe, so I am assuming they are either of Joseph's or William's line. My family tree is very tangled with the names Ellis, Smoot, Brown and Alley. Thanks for your help! My gggg-grandmother was Mary Brown, daughter of William, who married Hezekiah Ellis in 1829. William was Micajah's son and he married Mary Smoot, Benjamin's daughter. I have recently found a marriage record of a Obediah Ellis who married Martha Brown, also a daughter of William. My Hezekiah's 1st born was named Obediah, so I believe the previously mentioned Obediah was Hezekiah's brother, and if so, brothers married sisters...something that happened quite often. My family tree is very tangled with the names Ellis, Smoot, Brown and Alley.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but the Virginia Baptist Historical Society has a book of his, that lists some events he presided over. I contacted them and they sent me info about my relatives. They do not copy the pages - they just record the info on their letterhead and send it in that manner. If you weren't aware of this and are planning a trip up there, you might want to contact them and se if you can make an appointment to see the book. It would be neat for you to have a picture of it. It's a small world! I live in Bastrop, but spent my teenage and most of my adult life in Houston! I was born in VA, but we moved to Conroe in 1975 when I was starting Jr. High. After graduating from college, I lived on various occasions in Houston. I actually lived in Richmond, VA in 1994-1995, but of course, I wasn't interested in all this stuff until Rita hit. It took away my dad's beach house in Bolivar, and that event caused me to gain interest in figuring out his family tree. My dad and I are actually leaving on Monday - from Houston - to go to Richmond for a week to do research. I am very excited! Would love to hear from you! Shari Eichler

    2. Dr. Louis Manarin's newest Civil War book "Henrico County * Field of Honor" (976 pages) has over 20 listings in the index under 'hospitals' but does not mention a Wayside Hospital. Could they have been referring to a place of recuperation along the wayside/road. If you could furnish more information such as name, rank, unit, USA or CSA, and the source of the quotation I will ask for his opinion next week. Do you know if any other members of his unit were at Chimborazo at the same time? You can check at www.henricofieldofhono.com for more information on the book.
