    2. I am a descendant of the Woodson, Napier and Tucker families. Recently, I have read and/or heard (no source cited) that there is no record or documentation that John Woodson, Sr. was a medical doctor, and further that there is no proof that their homes in England were in either Dorset or Devonshire which I also had been told or read sometime in the past. Years ago when I first commenced genealogical research, I had learned that the rifle that was/is on display was not the Woodson/Ligon rifle. If I have been misinformed about no documentation of John Woodson's being a doctor nor documentation of the places from which he and Sarah came, I should appreciate very much evidence to the contrary, a source cite, please? Thank you, Janelle Via McKown

    3. Nancy, If I remember correctly, there was a 1644 Indian Massacre at Peircys Hundred. A Robert Ligon was visiting John Woodson at Piercys Hundred when the inncident took place. John Woodson was killed. Can anyone confirm this story? 3. I'll have to look it up later but in the meantime you could do a Google. It's very sad to read, names, sexes, ages, and at what 'plantation' they were killed, but then you have to remember that the local natives could have drawn up similar lists for their own dead. John Rolfe, widower of Pocahontas, died in 1622 but he is not shown on the list; did he die of disease, was he wounded and died from his wounds or a resulting infection? Luckily he had left their little boy in England to be educated. The settlement of Henricus was wiped out by the 1622 massacre, as were many others. On April 18, 1644 the Indians made a sudden attack against the settlements in Virginia and massacred 300 settlers before being repulsed. While this famous attack was in progress Col. Thomas Ligon who happened to be passing the residence of Dr. John Woodson, helped Sara Woodson defend her home against the Indians. Sara was alone in the house and the only weapon they had was an old gun which Col. Ligon handled with deadly effect. With his first shot he killed 3 Indians, his 2nd shot killed 2 more and his 3rd shot killed 2 more for a total of seven Indians killed by him that day. The old gun which rendered such valuable service was made in England and today it is now in the possession of and on display by the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, VA. To commerate this historic occassion, the name Ligon was crudely carved upon the stock of the rifle. I hope that this answers the question of how Col Thomas Ligon saved the life of Sara Woodson. Dr. John Woodson was away from home tending to a sick patient. Best Regards, Bernie Bland in Springfield, VA
