William Cheatwood's will was dated in 1781, a year after another brother, Loyalist Capt. James Chitwood (m. Alcy or Alice) was hanged in NC. I have wondered about the timing of that will also, since William didn't die until 1787. Another William Chitwood (stayed in Lancaster Co, PA, and proved to be a descendant of the first Thomas Chetwood, of VA 1653), died around the same time as William Cheatwood, of Powhatan Co, VA. Very little has been written about descendants of that William Chitwood, nor of his brother George Chitwood, of Lancaster Co, VA (1790). In Blanche Haines article (Wm & Mary Qtrly, 1938, V18, 2nd ser, pp. 507/9), those two are sons of Turner Chitwood, son of Thomas Chetwood II. She said, "William Chitwood died in 1788 leaving three children" (no names given) & "George Chitwood of Lancaster County died in 1793, leaving wife Judy and children, William, George, Susanna, Elizabeth, Nancy and Alcey." There is another JOHN CHITWOOD mentioned as "nephew" in 1792 Lancaster Co, VA will of Presley Neale, probably brother of Betty Neale who m. 1780 Lancaster Co, VA, William Chitwood, son of Turner. It seems that if we could find out more about decendants of Turner Chitwood's two sons, we ! just might come up with that connection of our Matthias to the first Thomas. Winney Lockett, m. 15 July 1808 Chesterfield Co, VA, Daniel Cheatwood - [Source: Broderbund CD #4, Marriage Records MD, NC, VA]. Do not know whether Gideon Lockett was her father or not.

I was just wondering if you knew which John Chitwood was mentioned in the will of Thomas Lockett? Was it William Cheatwood's son, John, or William Cheatwood's brother, John? It would appear to be his brother, John Chitwood, with the name spelled that way. Another question: is Winney Lockett Gideon Lockett's daughter? Could you please name your source for Winney marrying Daniel? While I'm at it do you have any idea why William Cheatwood's will was drawn up in 1781, but not proven until 1787? Thanks for the great information about the movement of county lines. Julia

Hi listers, I have been looking for someone who according to family lore, came over from Scotland in 1861. The 1880 census shows him to be 34 years old, so he would have been about 15 years old. I am having trouble finding him before that, and it occurred to me that just because such information did not survive, it does not mean that he did not necessarily travel with other family members. If ANY of you run across a George Duncan from Scotland prior to that 1880 census, by which time he is married and settled in Richmond on Stewart Street, I would love to know. His father was William, and mother Elizabeth Reid. What does anyone know about immigration into Richmond? Should I be looking for an area where Scottish people lived close together? Did those people customarily come off the boat at Richmond, or was is there somewhere I should be looking first? I am beginning to wonder if I should look in Canada. Suggestions? Jaime

This is a long shot, but I'm hoping for some help!!! A few years ago I was in Virginia doing research and found an early map (1790's or earlier) of the counties along the James River. I remember finding the name Jesse Lowe as a property owner in that area, but at the time I had no idea my Lowe's had been in VA. I'm wondering if anyone has a map showing property owners, and if so could someone verify that this is true for me? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Doreen in Texas [email protected]

Dianne, Richmond city directories are available on microfilm at the Library of VA. You can probably get them through an Interlibrary loan or through your local family history center. Good luck.
