Same for other cemeteries that buried those CSA men who died either in battle..... or later at a field hospital, as the result of a battle. A great many were buried, without being identified, but I'm trying to find the lists of those who were luckier than that. I'm STILL searching for Jasin GREEN who disappeared summer of 1863... just about a month after his brother Leighton GREEN. Both were born/raised in Bedford and Coffee Co's TN. Neither ever came home from the war. They were both in Co. B [Turney's Unit], First TN infantry Regiment...... from Apr 1861 thru until Apr and May of 1863. They were both reported officially as deserters... an automatic solution to absences, and was never followed-up on. No one had the time, nor resources, to search the Union Hospitals or Prison Detention Camps.... for missing CSA men. I have searched their military records, which is why I know that they were declared to be deserters, but that wasn't their mode of thinking. Leighton had been stationed up in VA... and had been working as recruiter there. He was awarded several commendations for his work... then he came up missing. Just over a month later, Jasin, who was also in the same area.... also came up missing. I have looked thru the lists for wounded or killed... at the battles where their Unit was involved and their names weren't on those lists, but those who were taken Prisoner... if there were lists.... have so far eluded me. I was once told that Leighton had died at Chicamauga... but he was NOT found anywhere on their casualty lists. I was also told that Jasin [Jason] may have died near Gold Run in GA, just before the fall of Atlanta, but again..... after checking the lists of dead and injured.... I have found nothing. At this point... I am trying to check all Hospital Records, Cemeteries and Prison Camps. Sadly.... all of these buried large numbers of unidentified men.... so this is a difficult search all the way around. Any suggestions.... would be appreciated.

We have 37,000 southern boys in Hollywood and Oakwood Cemeteries, Richmond, Virginia. Oakwood is near the civil war Chimborazo Hospital that covered 40 acres and contained 76,000 men during the war. They had a 20% mortality rate. By estimate, 18,000 southern men are in Oakwood.

Hi Sherry, My ancestor, John Saunders, was husband #2 of Bartholomew Stovalls' widow Ann Burton Stovall, living in what is now Powhatan Co. Stovall researchers pretty much agree that Hagar was a Stovall, but don't know whether she was a child by an earlier marriage (he DID still die when he had young children at home) or a little sister, etc. There is some interesting information I found on William Tabor, including his inventory, at this WorldConnect website (Descendants of William Tabor and Hagar Stovall) a while back looking for the Stovalls (all my step-cousins!): http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1785301&id=I1150 I have no way to judge the accuracy of this information, etc. Good Luck! Janie - There is a Benajah Thomas in the 1820 VA census index in Richmond City, page 194 of that census. The 1810 census index, there is a 'Bet' Thomas living in Henrico Co. in Richmond, which is probably your Benajah [names were often transcribed incorrectly or difficult to read by the indexer]; my index gives the National Archives microfilm numbers for this which are M252 [that is the # for VA], Roll 70, page 728. You may order census films thru interlibrary loan from the Library of VA [by year and county] or access them at certain libraries around VA if you live there [you'd have to check around], or thru the National Archives regional office in the VA region [in which case, you'd use the above number, M252 etc.] - again, if you live in the area. These censuses will give you some info on number of children, their gender and age, but no names. Census only started to list names of other people in the household from 1850 on. I think records from Richmond City are fairly decent. Henrico Co. Will Books 1-18 [1781-1869] are filmed on 11 reels with a General Index to Wills on a 12th reel - also probably available from LOV thru interlibe loan. If you find a will for Benajah, then you may learn the names of his children. Vital records may also help you - Henrico Co. has marriages 1781-1850, and much more - you may have to read thru them and see which Thomases have Benajah as a father. Tedious, but maybe the only way. Ditto for death records. Henrico Co. has zillions of surviving records, a small portion of which are on microfilm at the Libe of VA. - but still - a lot to go through. Good luck! In my original query I was asking if anyone knew of an organization that my grandmother may have worked for. I was also hoping someone would know of a relative that had been boarded at my grandmother's home in Eastern Henrico that was near the Masonic Home, not at the Masonic Home itself. I apologize if I did not have made my question clear. I went to school with a lot of children that were at the Masonic Home of Va -it was a working farm at that time and I remember the children had chores to done to help with the operation of the farm. Thanks for the info on the Masonic Homes-if I can't use it, it may be a help to someone else. Donna Kennedy

Virginia did not record births between 1896 and 1912 due to budget cuts. Some localities did keep records during this period. Sheltering Arms Hospital is still in existence but it is a rehab hospital now located next to Memorial Regional Medical Center. Sheltering Arms has moved several times. The address is Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Centers 8254 Atlee Rd. Mechanicsville, VA 23116 The phone no. is 804 342-4100 for information. You might do a google search to see if they have a website. I am not familiar with Barnes Hospital. Did it become part of the Medical College of VA? Good luck in your search.
