    1. Vass Surname
    2. My great grandaunt, Lavinia Via, daughter of Carter Via and his wife, Lousiana Via [her maiden name was Via] and sister of my great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Via, was married to Henry Jackson Clay Vass at Black Creek Baptist Church in Hanover County, lower end of the county, on 28 December 1858 at 3 PM [source: Immanuel Episcopal Church records]. Lavinia died in 1861, as reported by her Mother [source: Virginia Bureau of Vital Statistics, Hanover Deaths,1853-1896]. Husband H.J.C. Vass was serving in the Confederate Army at the time. He was married, as a widower, age 37, Mollie Ann Lavinia Davis, single, age 23, daughter of John J. Davis, on 14 January 1869. He was born in Caroline County, and she was born in Hanover. My Lavinia and H.J.C. Vass had no surviving children, but I believe he and Mollie Ann Lavinia [Davis] Vass did. I do not know where he is buried, but many years ago, somewhere in Hanover, perhaps in Ashland or in a church cemetery, I saw her grave marker. She lived into the 20th century. I'm sorry I cannot remember where I saw her burial place, but she definitely had a grave marker that contained vital stats. Is this Henry J.C. Vass an ancestor of any Vass family about which there is interest?
