Do you mind checking the index for George Phillips and John Phillips? George was originally on the Totopotomy Creek in the late 1600s and then moved up near Pug Swamp about 1725. The book is $40 on Amazon. Apparently Bell, Book, and Candle doesn't have a website. The book is not in the Fairfax or Arlington libraries. (I am in Northern Virginia.) There are two copies in the State Library and one copy at the Louisa County library. So the $64 question is -- is it worth $40 to me or worth a trip -- which, given gas prices, would probably more than $40? Thanks to you and also to E. W. Wallace for bringing this book to our attention.
George Phillips 1st listing in the St Paul's V Bk is 8-13-1719 - he has been asked to join a road building crew - a common request. To clarify the message I sent - Slash Church location used to be listed as Peakes or Peaks - all was called St. Paul's Parrish until it was divided therefore the ancestors you are looking for were in that parish UNTIL they became residents - tho not having moved - of St. Martins Parish which was created FROM/taken out of St. Paul's Parish in 1727. The book I have quoted from if the St. Paul's Vestry Book 1704 - 1787. Many people were confused by this & that's why we have so many records saying one or the other parish. So if you were now close to the border/division you may or may not have an idea which parish you were now included in. Therefore as has been said before - when in doubt - check them all out! Sally, There are twenty citations of the name of George Phillips, and citations on four different John Phillips in it. There are also multiple citations for the same first names when spelling the last name with one L as in Philips. Mrs. Gregory laid the book out with a name index in the rear. Whenever a particular name is mentioned on any page, it will have a corresponding citation in the index. Hence you might see ten to twenty pages listed in which that name was mentioned in the book. There are fifty three individuals listed with the last name of Phillips in the book. I would suggest calling the Bell Book and Candle at 804-798-9047 - They could probably send you the book through the mail. They are located at 106 South Railroad Ave. in the City of Ashland, Va. It will probably take you 6-8 hours to read through each page listing George Phillips and John Phillips.
