Diane and Deanna: One more resource you might want to check is the Virginia Historical Society, in Richmond. I went to their website http://www.vahistorical.org/research/main.htm and found out that they have a vertical file on "The Meadow" in Caroline County. It might be useful to email them and ask about the contents of the file. I would suggest asking for whoever might know the Colonial history of the site, if that's the era when your ancestors were in that area. But the staff may not know all about it yet. The good news for history buffs is that prior to development, the State Fair will have to do a complete cultural and environmental assessment, which will include a prehistoric and historic record of the area, and that record will be public via the Army Corps of Engineers. It appears as if the staff seems to be very interested in learning all this too, because eventually they want to have interpretive content about it on the site. So it might take some patience, but you'll get your information! There is some very distinct information on the Caroline County website to include notes from their Board of Supervisors and a letter from the Fair Assn. They do plan for the fair of 2006 to be their opening event, and it appears that the Celtic Festival will move there too. I just hope that they have some way for the disabled to get around... ;-) I have seen that river change its course over several maps - and remember, the older of the counties along the river will own the river... like here, Goochland owns the James River - not Powhatan. Thanks... I have had good luck phoning them - and if there is only one or two pages to an item, they will copy and mail it for free, or maybe they did that for me since I am 'local' - but about 35 miles distant. And perhaps I hit the right day and the right volunteer! One never knows unless one tries...
