Beth (Pettus) Maxwell
Dear Beth, There is a lot of information on file on this William H. Pettus at the Library of Virginia. He was admitted to the Robert E. Lee Camp # 1 Confederate Soldiers Home at age 71. I have read his hand written letter requesting to be allowed to come stay at the home stating that his wife and son were both dead and that he was sick and had no place to stay. He did die at the home and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery. He was in the Fayette Artillery and that was also in the documents of the Soldiers Home. You can bring these documents up on your computer through the Library of Virginia website for the Lee Camp Home and actually see his handwriting and signature. The Oakwood Cemetery has a ledger book indicating the number of his grave. We have thousands of Confederate Soldiers buried there without tombstones and marked only with a small square cobblestone with a corresponding number. I am a member of the Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and we are presently working on a project to obtain a tombstone for each of the 15,000 soldiers buried there. I have the honour to remain Madam, Your most humble and obedient servant John Henry Taylor Commander Gen. Robert E.
