If you read the history of Hanover County, by Rosewell Page and other Hanoverians, they tell how the area got its name. During the 1700's a trusted slave was left with the care of his master's children. The slave killed the children. When the slave owner returned, the slave was caught and given the punishment of a cruel and painful death. He was tied between two young unbroken horses. A gun was fired and the horses in fear ran. The slave's foot was said to have been found there at Beaverdam- thus the awful name. Sandy Satterwhite
