    3. Jennifer - I don't think anyone has any idea how many cemeteries in Virginia are paved over and under sub-divisions, malls, cities, etc. There are probably more than you can even imagine. I have a friend whose grandfather, mind you that close, is buried UNDER the parking lot at the Methodist Church in Cartersville, VA. - the church needed the space for parking - there was no land avail. and they paved over their cemetery! No one knew what was happening until it was finished! If you could see Cartersville, one of the few remaining 'river towns' on the James, it has survived because it sits high on a bluff overlooking the river, and most 'yards' go straight down! However, that is no excuse... but the church has not even entertained re-interring the bodies... they don't have that kind of money. Just recently in Powhatan County, a local landowner fought and fought the site of the new Rt. 288, that connects I-95 outside of Richmond to I-64, because of a slave cemetery. The highway dept. paid for removal and re-interment, but she fought - said those graves had been on her family's property as long as there as been a home there - and this property is not too far from Monacan settlement, and the family were French Huguenots. She lost - and the highway goes over the site now - and through her land. Its really sad. Then, about a year or so ago, they were, and are still, building an upper scale housing development around the new state golf course in Powhatan and Chesterfield Counties. Again, graves were found, probably slaves, and once again, they were re-interred elsewhere... they did advertise for any 'kin' to contact them, some do not even do that! It happens all the time in his area. I didn't know that they were allowed to do that. For some reason I though it was illegal. Should be. I would be devastated if it were my ancestors.
