Gloria, I checked my 1850 Hanover County VA Census and found: On page 148- Enumeration 5 Dec 1850 Family Number 1009 Lane, Nancy 48 F Richard 16 M Laborer Arabella 14 F It would appear that Nancy is their mother's name and perhaps a widow before 1850 as there is no Lane death notice in this census. The only other info I have going further back is the 1810 Index Virginia Census which lists Jasper Lane and Keziah Lane as Heads of Households in Hanover County. This is more than likely skipping a generation, but may be of some help to you down the road.
