Dear Shelton Cousins, I've just started documenting my line of Sheltons of "Rural Plains" and I need help from experienced researchers who have already documented their lines back to John Shelton who built "Rural Plains", John's parents, and his children. I've got copies of many published genealogies from Whitaker's early book, Z. F. Shelton's version where he tries to correct Whitaker's earlier work, The Louisa County Historical Magazine, and various other published genealogies of the Sheltons of York, Westmoreland, Hanover, Louisa, and Albemarle, but NO TWO genealogies contain the same info. Whitaker's book has John Shelton, the elder's children as his brother, but Z. F. Shelton says they are his sons. Does anyone have a copy of John Shelton, the elder's will written in 1706 and recorded in 1708 Westmoreland Co.? If so, can I get a copy or at least get a list of the heirs named in his will? My ancestor is said to be William Shelton (1676-1734) who married Hannah (some researchers have Susannah) Armistead. Who has researched William and Hannah Shelton? Have you been able to verify that he was a son of John Shelton who built "Rural Plains"? If so, what primary document are you using? What about his children, any documents showing who his children were? It is said he had a son named William who died in Albemarle Co., VA and had a son named Henry who also died in Albemarle Co. Can anyone prove this? Has any been to "Rural Plains" and recorded the family history found in the chart on the wall in the hall? If so, could I get a copy of that genealogy for my documentation purposes? The only other copy is in the London Museum. What other sources of family history in found at "Rural Plains". I haven't been there yet and don't know if I can make it there to visit the Sheltons before the official transfer of ownership to the NPS and the Richmond Battlefield Park takes place next year. If anyone is actively trying to document this line, please contact me at [email protected] or reply here so others can follow along. I'm big into documentation and I really want to properly document this line and correct all the mistakes found in previously published works. Thanks, Robert C.
