Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VBC.2ACI/1296.1 Message Board Post: Is this Robert Beadles West b. 10/15/1874, d. 1/4/1970, son of John Thomas West & Susan Hall who married Annie Stanley? He went by the name Beadles. He & Annie had 6 children - Lee B. West, Edith T. West, Lola M. West, Annie M. West, Sadie J. West, & Lola West. His wife, Annie, was the daughter of Eugenia A. Stanley (b. 5/22/1850, d. 3/30/1951). I'm still trying to find where Eugenia fits into the Stanley family; she doesn't seem to have ever been married but had 11 children - no record of a father can be found for any of them and she's always listed as single on the census records. Annie's sister, Ambler Lillian Stanley (married William Franklin Stanley, son of Timothy Thomas Stanley & Isabella Ann Jones) is my husband's step-grandmother. Beadles & Annie are both buried in the Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery in Bumpuss.

    3. John - since I have no Paynes but do have Crenshaws, it would further your research to have Rebeccah's father's name - you may not realize how little women were mentioned in the records! Here is a little more on this Payne family. I have identfied three brothers who left Hanover County and moved west to Monongalia Co. Va. about 1800. Jesse and William G Payne were lawyers. Jesse married Rebeccah Crenshaw in Saint Pauls Parish in 1782. Jesse married 2 Winnifred Rice Bowles Wakeland in Bourbon Co. Ky in 1809. William G never married and died in Preston Co. Va/WV in 1849. A third brother John Payne married Elizabeth (Betsy) Bowles and died in Bourbon Co. Ky in 1826. My GGGrandfather John Charles Payne was born to Jesse and Rebeccah in Hanover County Sept 7, 1783. These brothers were closely associated with Richmond Land speculator Henry Banks. Thanks Again John M Cogar

    3. Dear John, There is no Payne, Pane, or Pain in the Vestry book. There are lots of Crenshaws some listed as late as 1784,5,6. This book only goes to 1787 as Slash was abandoned - parishioners left due to revolution, their affiliation w/England etc & could not pay the minister or upkeep - no mandatory collection of money. This left Old Church which is now Immanual Episcopal to fend for itself. If you don't mind I am going to send this to the Hanover VA Gen Web Group so they can answer your question. Best of luck - am sure they can give you answers! 3. Jerry, This may or may not be of help to you. I used to know an Andrew R. Mowatt who lived in the Mechanicsville area and had some connection with Canadian relatives. He used to own and operate a Scottish Goods business but I lost touch with him a few years ago when he sold his business due to health problems. He and his wife, Edna, lived at 6272 Tammy Lane Mechanicsville, Va. The Richmond phone directory still lists him at the same address with a phone # of 804-746-0752. It just seems that having the same unusual name, living in the same area, and also having a Canadian connection, is too much coincidence. On Nov 24, 1880, Mary E. Edwards, d/o William Edwards, married Valentine D. Hall in Hanover County (from the marriage register). She was 23 and single. In the same register, I find Elizabeth E. Edwards (actually Mary Elizabeth Ellen Edwards) marrying Silas Askew on December 22, 1881. She is 24 and the daughter of William and Lucinda Edwards. She is listed as single, not a widow. I cannot find Valentine Hall after the 1880 census, which was completed before he was married that year. My question is: Is this the same Mary Edwards and did she actually marry twice in just over a year? I don't find a grave listing for Valentine Hall and don't have a date of death. I was up at Shiloh Church last week looking at the graves and have yet to answer this question. Valentine Hall is a grandson of Thompson Hall, via Warner Hall, and Mary Elizabeth Ellen Edwards is a granddaughter of Thompson Hall via Loucinda Hall, who married William Edwar! ds. If this is the same woman, they would be first cousins which wasn't that unusual at that time.
