I am sure many of you already know of these bookstores [at least one of them is a bookstore] and publishers of Southern records, mostly. Well, Willow Bend Books encompasses a lot of different genealogical books. If the URLs appear with dashes or parens before and after, delete the punctuation and then cut and paste. Rootsweb, at least formerly, did not like URLs as there was fear of your getting viruses. Willow Bend Books Westminster, MD _http://www.willowbendbooks.com/_ (http://www.willowbendbooks.com/) Willow Bend took over the former Heritage Books, which also published many Southern genealogical books Southern Historical Press Greenville, SC http://www.southernhistoricalpress.com/index.html New Papyrus Publishing Athens, GA (formerly Iberian Press) _http://genealogyresources.org/new.html_ (http://genealogyresources.org/new.html) As for some of the few remaining colonial court records, deeds, etc. of Hanover Co., about 1735 and a few years later, I highly recommend you give up a few gourmet coffees and explore the publications of Mrs. Rosalie Edith Davis, who has abstracted at least one book of Hanover Co. records and quite a few of the progeny county of Hanover Co.--Louisa Co. Her books are well done and are quite inexpensive for the value that they have to searchers of that part of colonial Virginia. Here is her website _http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/_ (http://www.angelfire.com/va3/redavis/) (Oops - I see one I don't have - St. Marks Parish!!!!) E.W.Wallace

To clarify the message I sent - Slash Church location used to be listed as Peakes or Peaks - all was called St. Paul's Parrish until it was divided therefore the ancestors you are looking for were in that parish UNTIL they became residents - tho not having moved - of St. Martins Parish which was created FROM/taken out of St. Paul's Parish in 1727. The book I have quoted from if the St. Paul's Vestry Book 1704 - 1787. Many people were confused by this & that's why we have so many records saying one or the other parish. So if you were now close to the border/division you may or may not have an idea which parish you were now included in. Therefore as has been said before - when in doubt - check them all out! Sally, There are twenty citations of the name of George Phillips, and citations on four different John Phillips in it. There are also multiple citations for the same first names when spelling the last name with one L as in Philips. Mrs. Gregory laid the book out with a name index in the rear. Whenever a particular name is mentioned on any page, it will have a corresponding citation in the index. Hence you might see ten to twenty pages listed in which that name was mentioned in the book. There are fifty three individuals listed with the last name of Phillips in the book. I would suggest calling the Bell Book and Candle at 804-798-9047 - They could probably send you the book through the mail. They are located at 106 South Railroad Ave. in the City of Ashland, Va. It will probably take you 6-8 hours to read through each page listing George Phillips and John Phillips. George Phillips 1st listing in the St Paul's V Bk is 8-13-1719 - he has been asked to join a road building crew - a common request. However since this book is not in date order a processioning of his property dates to 1708 - 9 & again 1711-12 7 again 1715-16 & 1719 & 1727-28 & 1739-40, 1743,1751, 1763.for land near Slash Church. John 1719 - land near Sheltons other names - James same time frame as George Martha 1784-5 getting support Nathan 1759 to 1779 Richard 1721, 1724 tobacco count for property at Stagg Creek & Gra?sey Swamp - were "tellers" so may no be their property. Do you mind checking the index for George Phillips and John Phillips? George was originally on the Totopotomy Creek in the late 1600s and then moved up near Pug Swamp about 1725. The book is $40 on Amazon. Apparently Bell, Book, and Candle doesn't have a website. The book is not in the Fairfax or Arlington libraries. (I am in Northern Virginia.) There are two copies in the State Library and one copy at the Louisa County library. So the $64 question is -- is it worth $40 to me or worth a trip -- which, given gas prices, would probably more than $40? Thanks to you and also to E. W. Wallace for bringing this book to our attention.
John, I was wondering if you would mind checking your book for Medlock/Menlock/Matlocks? they were there early.. the Medlock/Matlocks were in New Kent Co until the boundary lines changed, then by 1708 I believe is the first record I have of them in Hanover Co... Thanks Brenda
The book, "Some Ancient Landowners of St. Martin's Parish", by Norine Campbell Gregory, was being carried in inventory by the "Bell, Book, and Candle" book store in Ashland, Va. I did not find a listing for St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co. However, this MIGHT help locate a few people. Do an author search for this lady on the Family History Library Catalog, Salt Lake City: Norine Campbell Gregory She wrote and it has been published recently by New Papyrus Press, Athens, GA Some ancient landowners in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., Virginia. These are not church or parish records, however, if one believes the title--only that these folks lived in that parish. E.W.Wallace by Norine Campbell Gregory
My search of the Family History Library Catralog [Salt Lake City] did not turn up a specific book for St. Martin's parish. However, someone has recently compiled a book of some early of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover. Do an author search for
