    2. Carol, I research the Alsup/Alsop family. Joseph Alsup (circa 1690-1788) married Agnes Pulliam. Joseph lived in what is now considered Hanover County. William Alsup Jr was his father. The land where Slash Church stands was owned by William. There is a historical marker near the church honoring Slash Church and William Alsup. My question is - have your run across Agnes Pulliams name or do you have any info on her? I am at a dead end trying to locate info on Agnes. Thank you. Pat Alsup Hardman ( patty_jean@comcast.net)

    3. Dear Carol, With reference to William Pulliam (Pullium, Pullum) - The are 39 entries in the index on persons with the last name of Pulliam etc. James Pulliam is cited on three seperate pages and William Pulliam on eleven seperate pages. On page 30 of the book I did find this: "William Pulliam was of a very ancient family of New Kent and Hanover (sometimes spelled Pollam, Pullam, Pullum, etc.) which has been circumvented by geneologists, possible because of loss of records in those counties, but vast records do exist of this family in many other areas, and need consolidation and analysis." With so many entries in the index, I would not be able to research each page individually for you. I would suggest that you try to locate the book in a library or to purchase it. With so many mentions of this particular family name in it, I believe that it would be of immense value to you. The title is "Some Ancient Landowners in St. Martin's Parish Hanover County, Virginia" by Norine Campbell Gregory. I bought it a couple of years ago at the "Bell, Book, and Candle" Bookstore in Ashland, Va. 1. Pug Swamp, Beaverdam, Old Church, & Totopotomoy Creek
    2. Sally Phillips
    3. Good morning! In trying to trace my 18th-century Phillips, I need to understand Hanover County geography. I've been searching the American Memory maps for an early 18th-century map of the area, but haven't found one. A George Phillips had land on Totopotomoy Creek near Old Church and the Pamunkey River before 1700. About 1725 a George Phillips patented land on Pug Swamp. According to modern maps, Pug Swamp is northeast of Beaverdam on the North Anna River, just to the west of a nipple-shaped loop. The two areas are about 30 miles apart, as the crow flies. Does anyone know if Pug Swamp in 1725 was in the same place, or if there was a different Pug Swamp closer to Old Church? Can anyone tell me where to find an 18th-century map of the area? Thank you all for your help. The books you've recommended are going to be a big help, I think, when I can finally obtain them. Now I have to be able to understand what I read. Sally Phillips

    1. Los Angeles Public Library Catalog
    2. Long ago, I stumbled upon a book in the Los Angeles Public Library, genealogy/history section, a book compiled by Charles Blunt. I have cut and pasted some of the information below. If you live in Virginia, perhaps you can find a copy in your one of your State's libraries. I cannot speak for other States. This search for Hanover land patents was conducted many years before so much information was on the internet, including the abstracts of the Virginia land patents. The colonial and some post-Revolutionary patents also are abstracted in the eight volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers, a few volumes of which may be in your public library. The first three volumes were published LONG ago, but the succeeding volumes have only been published in the 1990s by the Virginia Genealogical Society. C&P provide some great people-finders. A Matlock is mentioned in Blunt's book, but I suggest you use the Library of Virginia website--the digitized library--and check land records. Then search for Matlock and its variant spellings. I believe several Matlock males appear in the abstracts of deeds ca 1730s compiled years ago by Mrs. Rosalie Edith Davis of Manchester, MO. She is still selling her books. If you want her website, ask for it. The book I have quoted from if the St. Paul's Vestry Book 1704 - 1787. Many people were confused by this & that's why we have so many records saying one or the other parish. 3. Hi Dianne - Just me again... I have a question. Just recently in the Richmond paper I read an article re: moving the Timberlake Home and cemeteries for a new sub-division... question? Just where was that location? I know that Burnet Timberlake and my ancestor Col. John Starke were members of St. Paul's Parish in Hanover, and Col. John's land was one of the boundaries of the church - do you have any idea where this would be in Hanover? My husband got lost the last time we went out to see our grandson play baseball, and we wound up out in the country where the names seemed familiar... would surely like to be able to see the area, and does the church still exist?
