    1. RE: [VAHANOVE] Garland, Nelson, Overton
    2. Judith McGowan
    3. My records show that Anne Nelson, born 1731 married 1752 (not 1782) to Overton Harris, Sr. (1730-1789) I also show that Mary Garland, born 1698, was the daughter of Edward Garland, Sr. (born about 1664, St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., VA and died after 3.14.1719) and Jane Jennings. I also show that Overton Harris, Sr. was the son of Capt William Harris, Jr. (born, 1707, Cedar Hill, Hanover Co., VA, died 1749, Louisa Co., VA) and Ann (Elizabeth) Burnett who died in Louisa Co., VA. Capt William Harris, Jr. was the son of Maj. William Harris, Sr. and Temperance Overton. You probably have the details on this part of the lineage already. The tombstone you refer to isn't exactly hidden away. It is located off a private road on the property of Paramount Kings Dominion, or whatever it calls itself these days. The Harris cemetery there is the largest private cemetery in Hanover Co., VA and boasts having the oldest known identifiable tombstone in Hanover Co., VA as well (Temperance's). It was encased in a marble/stone border quite a number of years ago to protect and is clearly readable and visible. A simple request to the amusement park will allow you access to view the graveyard. I have been by there a number of times, without even bothering to notify anyone. As to Cedar Hill, itself, it was burned down deliberately many years ago when the theme park was built. I can remember seeing it many times over the years as I drove by. Hope this helps... One is about the marriage of Anne Nelson,d/o Edward Nelson & Mary Garland-1782 to Overton Harris. and Mary Garland was the d/o Edward Garland and Jane.Overton Harris owned a farm called The Forrest-located on rt 738 east of rt 1 Question: Is there any other information about Overton Harris? Does the 1782 refer to the marriage date of Harris to Anne Nelson? Reason: I am a descendant of William Harris and his wife Temperance Overton. There is a tombstone for Temperance Harris (d. 1716) hidden away in Hanover Co. I doubt that anything remains of a home for that William Harris, as I understand MOST of the colonial homes were not the stately plantation homes we romantics like to envision. If they were, why did my ancestors keep moving west and south? 1. [VAHANOVE] Poague name in Hanover
    2. Sheri T. Millikin
    3. When I saw the posting about the Clough/Poague connection, I thought I would pass this piece of information on (from "Eastern Hanover Family Album") Clarence H. Poague, Minister at Gethsemane Church of Christ from Sept 15, 1912 to March, 1916 Mrs. Clarence H. Poague, wife of above. Their photos are in this book and this is the only time I see the name referred to in Hanover. With such a unique name, thought there may be some connection. Sheri

    1. [VAHANOVE] Hayton-Allen-Crow
    2. Does anyone have any information on a John Hayton from mid 1700's, husband of Mary and father of John, George, WIlliam and Elizabeth. Could also he Heaton, Haton and possibly Hayden. Has been referred to as John Haton from Hanover.May have been a carpenter by trade. Two brothers are WIlliam and Isaiah. The son John married Margaret Crow and they lived their lives in Washington County until his death in 1809. I have a deed and a will for property at the mouth of the Hungry Mother for John, Jr. But have no evidence of a John (Sr) from Hanover. Any clues?? Kathy Hayton Cramer Clinton, Tennessee

    1. [VAHANOVE] Denton and Hargrave Families
    2. lawrence leveque
    3. Hi, My Hanover County search interests include the Denton, Hargrave, Mason and Jones families. According to the late 18th and early 19th century tax and other records they lived about 25 miles west of the courthose. This would be in far western Hanover County. I have good information as early as the late 1700s. Interested in information further back. Anyone wanting information I have collected should contact me also. 1. [VAHANOVE] Clough Overton & Betsy Poague
    2. Clough Overton & Betsy Poague Clough Overton's Kentucky home was in Harrodsburg (now in Mercer Co., which was created out of Lincoln Co in 1785). In early 1782, Elizabeth Poague aged 18 was betrothed to a genteel, wealthy young man named Clough Overton. In August of 1782 Overton and others from Harrodsburg went to the defense of Bryan Station which was under siege by 600 Indians from various tribes. Young Overton never returned, being one of the many brave pioneers who fell at the battle of Blue Licks. Years later, a grandchild of Elizabeth (Poague) Thomas stated Grandmother comforted herself with a new Lover, but to her last days would weep over the fate of Overton. One of her sons was named Overton Thomas, a name which occurs in the genealogical records of her descendants. On July 16, 1782, Clough Overton made his will in which he devised some 30,000 acres of land and 55,000 acres of warrants to brothers: John, James, George, William, Tom & Richard & to his sisters Mary, Becky & Sarah and to his father John Overton. "To Betsy Poague, 500 acres of land lying and being on Lick Branch of the Licking River to her and her heirs forever. I give to the aforementioned Betsy Poague 400 acres of land lying and being on the waters of Salt River adjoining Isaac Hite on the East Side. (Note: this tract is in Mercer Co., Ky. on present day US 127 north ) Further I give to the afsd Betsy Poage three cows, and my bay horse to her and her heirs forever. Her step-father, Col. Joseph Lindsey, was one of the witnesses but he also fell at the Battle of Blue Licks on the same day as Clough Overton. Ann, Elizabeth's mother, was also one of the two witnesses & she proved the will in Lincoln Co on 21 Jan 1783...the will was not recorded as it lacked the oath of the second witnesses James Deacon. The Overton heirs put up a vicious fight to prevent Betsy Poague (who would marry John Thomas, first surveyor of Mercer Co.) from obtaining title to the two most valuable tracts of land willed by Clough Overton. In Dec 1805, James Deacon then of Livingston Co., Ky. (under a writ of Mandamus from the Ky. Court of Appeals in 1805) testified as to the will. Even though the Overton Heirs ultimately failed, the litigation continued until May 1808. Elizabeth (Poague) Thomas would give an interview now found in the Draper Mss. She was the daughter of William & Ann (Kennedy) Poague.
