List Listed today on Ancestry.com is Hanover births-1853-1896 Since there has been so much activity on the list lately..maybe now is the time for someone more knowledgable that me to give all of us (new and old) a timeline for Hanover..ie How Hanover evolved with dates Time frame for the 3 parishes..St Peters,St Pauls and St Martins When the records burned and what's left Information about the Hanover Historical Society I have been priveleged to help in my small way recently but i have also gained so much knowlege about the history of my county in the process.BOY.these families were really intertwined(BIG GRIN) Most of my family are not native Hanover folks but it has still been fun. A subscriber on the Hanover Co. VA list was interested in the Rodes family. My interest is that he was a son-in-law of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA (my ancestor). Here are some bits and pieces for those who may be interested: JOHN RODES. WIR2142. (Living in 1766 in Albemarle Co.) He reportedly was the husband of Mary, daughter of Robert Harris. Albemarle Co. DB 2-67 verifies that by 1758 John Rodes was married to a daughter of Robert Harris. Harris deeded slaves to John Rodes "me thereunto moving but more especially for the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my son in Law John Rodes....give grant bargain sell unto the said John Rodes & his heirs the following Negroes [two slaves, who are named]. 26 Aug 1758 /s/ Robert Harris. Wits: Matthew Harris, David Lewis, Joel Terril, Andrew Wallace." (Adapted from Ruth and Sam Sparacio, DEED ABSTRACTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DEED BOOK 2, 9 FEBRUARY 1758-12 MARCH 1761 [McLean, VA: Ruth & Sam Sparacio, 1988] p. 20) The will of his father-in-law Major Robert Harris names his son-in-law John Rodes as co- executor, along with another son-in-law, William Shelton. 18 June 1765. I August 1765. Son Christopher to have 40 acres of land in Albemarle County, known as "Bears Cornfield." After decease of wife, son William to have all land I now hold in Albemarle County. Sons, Robert, Tyre and William Harris to have slaves. Wife Mowrning (Mourning) to have use of all lands during her life. Son William [who was underage] to be under direction of son-in-law John Rodes. Exrs: sons-in-law John Rodes and William Shelton. Wit: Daniel Maupin, John Mullins, Jr, William Maupin and Connerly Mullins. At a vestry [of Fredericksville Parish] held at the Church below the Mountains September 25th 1765, "John Rodes is appointed a Vestryman in the Room of Robt. Harris dec'd." (Rosalie Edith Davis, FREDERICKSVILLE PARISH VESTRY BOOK, 1742-1787, Vol. I [Manchester, MO: privately printed, 1978], p. 82) A later entry at the vestry held 5th day of November 1766, John Rodes, Jr. acted with others at the vestry, having taken the oaths in court and now subscribed to be conformable to Doctrine of the Church of England.... (Ibid.) We can assume that John, Jr. is of legal age to act in this capacity. The following Louisa Co. deed indicate that in 1766 Rode's wife was named Mary and that they were of Albemarle Co. The deed also implies they had long been married--almost 40 years. Since Hanover Co. records for the period 1727 are no longer extant, we cannot determine whether the couple or the husband alone was the grantee. Louisa Co. DB D?-72-73 We John Rhodes and Mary his wife of St. Anns Par., Albemarle for Natural Love and Effection to our well Beloved Son Clifton Rhodes now of Louisa Co. one tract of 414 a; land granted to us, John Rhodes & Mary his wife, by James Nuckolds of Hanover Co., as pr. deed 1 Oct 1727...George Barkleys line...Matthew Andeson's line...corner on David Anderson. 4 Oct 1766. /s/ John (R) Rodes, Mary (+) Rodes. Wit: James Overton, James McGhehee, William Smith, David Martin, Geo. Lumsdon ... day of Oct 1766 proved by three witnesses. (Rosalie Edith Davis, LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOK C, C 1/2, D & D 1/2 [Manchester, MO, 1977], p. 63) At another Fredericksville Parish vestry ca. 1767, "Order'd that James Wherry and John Rodes do procession all the lands between Mechams & Moremans River up to Maupines Mashing House path." (p. 61 of Vestry Book) Malcolm Hart Harris in his history of Louisa County, Virginia, mentions that Robert Harris, formerly of Louisa Co., where he was surveyor, later lived in Albemarle Co. but moved back to Louisa Co. The above deed to son-in-law John Rodes verifies that he was contemplating moving. Albemarle Co. DB ... p. 38, 11 Mar 1761, Jas Harris & wife Mary To Thos Grubbs, Moorman river, was witnessed by Jno. McCord as well as Jno. Rodes and Wm. Shelton, all associates or in-laws of the extended Robert and Christopher Harris families of Albemarle Co. p. 40, same date as above, indicates that Jno. McCord Sr and Jno. McCord Jr. was witnesses, as well as were Thos Grubbs and Wm. Shelton, of deed Richard Black, Cumberland Co., Province of Carolina, to Jno. Rodes for 35 pds., 200 A Moorman River, Hercules Pillar. Other Land? It is unknown whether the John Rodes who in Mar 1744/45 received two grants of land "in that part of Orange Co. designed to be called Augusta." Two tracts of land were "in the Fork of Shanadore." Refer to CAVALIERS & PIONEERS, V. V, pp. 80-81. Pat Bk 35-57: John Rodes, 79 acs. Albemarle Co. on both sides of moremans Riv. on the N side the Bucks elbow, adj. his own Lines & then his Line of another Survey. 25 Sep 1762., p. 57. 10 Shill. (C & P, V. 7, p. 5-6) John Rodes died before Oct 1775 in Albemarle Co.: Will written 12 Feb 1770; proved Oct 1775. Lends to Mary the whole estate, at her decease it is to be divided among five daughters and four sons. [Not named in abstract]. Exrs. Sons John and Charles Rodes. Wit: Francis Montgomery, William Maddox and John Wingfield. (J. Estelle Stewart King, ABSTRACTS OF WILLS, INVENTORIES, AND ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTS OF ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1748-1800 [Beverly Hills, CA: 1940], p. 22) It is probably John Rodes the son of John Rodes of Albemarle, deceased, who was granted land in Kentucky, as the date is 1784. He was granted 400 A in Lincoln Co. on Tate's Creek 9-20-1786 and another 20 A "Military & Lincoln," Tate's Creek, on the same date. As seen above, the father of John Rodes was deceased. (MASTER INDEX VIRGINIA SURVEYS AND GRANTS 1774-1791) Jno. Rodes was witness to another Albemarle Co. deed, cited below. James Harris, grantor, is believed to be the son-in-law to whom Major Robert Harris (qv) deeded property. Albemarle DB 2-38 indicates many Harris relatives witnessed the deed of a Harris family to another in-law (perhaps an in-law-to-be), Thomas Grubbs: 11 Mar 1761 Jas. Harris & wife Mary to Thos. Grubbs for 10 pds., no acres, Moorman river. Wit: Jno. Rodes, Wm. Shelton, Jno. McCord. On the same date, DB 2-40 and 2-41, is recorded a purchase of land by Jno. Rodes: DB 2-40, 11 Mar 1761, Rich. Blalock, Cumberland Co., Province of Carolina, to Jno. Rodes for 35 pds., 200 ac. Moorman River - Hercules Pillar. Wit: Jno. McCord, Sr., Jno. McCord, Jr., Thos. Grubbs, Wm. Shelton. (Note: Several, if not all, these witnesses were related to the Harris family of Hanover, Louisa, and Albemarle Cos.) DB 2-308, 13 May 1762, Jno. Rodes, Sr., Louisa, planter, to son David Rodes, for 5 sh. and love, 264 ac. N. fork Moorman and where David lives. Adj. grantor, mouth of Cabbin Creek branches. Wit: Clifton & Jno. Rodes, Wm. Wright, David Epperson, Thos. Grubbs. Although Rodes, Sr. is of Louisa Co. in 1762, one John Rodes, probably the elder, continued to purchase land in Albemarle Co.: DB 2-403 17 Jan 1764 Jno. Robinson, King and Queen Co., to Jno. Rodes, Louisa Co. for 107 pds., 10 sh., 900 acs. Meecham River. Part of pat. of Col. Jno. Chiswell and conveyed to Jr. Adj. David Glen, Benj. Dove, grantor. Wit: Thos. & Jas. Walker, Wm. Cabell, Jr., Jos. Cabell, Cornl. Thomas. In a lineage book, this information is given. (No documentation is given.) "Descendant of Robert Harris, as follows: 1. George H. Hunt (1829-1908) m. 1868 Inez Rodes (1842-1924) 2. Robert Rodes (1816-87) m. 1840 Sarah Elizabeth Carter (1823-88). 3. Tyree Rodes (d. 1827) m. 1811 Cynthia Holland (1789-1863). 4. John Rodes (1729-1810) m. 1756 Sarah Harris (1736-1803) 5. Robert Harris m. 1720 Mourning Glenn. (Comment: "Will of John Rodes [x], proved Oct 1775." From VIRGINIA WILL RECORDS "Notes from the Records of Alemarle County," p. 5. This would indicate the death date in the lineage for John Rodes is incorrect. Furthermore, the will [abstract] names Mary as wife, not Sarah. Perhaps Sarah was the first wife and Mary the second wife.) A John Rodes, Senr appears on the 1800 Albemarle Co. tax list, but he probably is a son of the deceased man. By 1800, there were a number of other Rodes males in Albemarle Co.: John Rodes, Jun., Capt. Matthew Rodes, Hezekiah Rodes, John Rodes, son of Epaphroditus, and Ephaphroditus himself. It should be noted that the connection between Thomas Harris of Virginia and Sir William Harris of Essex has been disproven. Sir William's son Thomas died testate and unmarried in England. The following from the Overton book: "George Poindexter II was born in 1651/52 in Jersey, England. He was vestryman and church warden of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent co., VA, 1704-05-06. He died 3.12.1716 (St. Peter's Parish records). Several contemporary researchers say his wife's name was unknown, although PDA records designate mary (perhaps Overton?) as wife of George II, rather than of George III." An entry for George Poindexter III, says: "His wife's name has been widely recorded as "Mary(perhaps verton?)" [Landers] but no source has been found in Poindexter or Overton records. She died in 1733 (St. Peter's Parish records)." Dear David, Apologies for waiting so long to be in touch and take you up on your kind offer. I should have been far more specific with the Turners I put online....but being a novice at this .....it flew away before I got the dates inserted. I am seeking information in regard to James Turner, SR born 5 march 1753 thought to be in or around Culpepper, VA. He was married to Margaret Headen/Heyden/Haydon (other varients). It is said they were married in upstate SC since she supposedly was born and reared in what is now Spartanburg County, SC about 1770. James Turner, SR was in SC in his early youth with his father. It is said that this particular George Turner (father of above James, SR) was born 1738 in Culpepper County, VA area, died 16 March 1804 in Spartanburg County, SC. According to a family bible which I have not seen nor seen copy from says that this George Turner was married to Hannah Middleton who was born about the same time as George Turner. They had one child, this son named James. She disappears at this juncture....death during childbirth, death from other cause, simply left the man, divorce? (not in those days?). George then moves to SC with his young son James where he later met and married again. I would like any confirmation to any of the above, would like to know parents of George Turner, his siblings....and of course a real push is on to locate place of burial for Hannah Middleton, her parent and siblings. I have searched for Hannah for some 30 years to no avail. I did the SC Middleton family ...lots of Hannah's but none that match up with a marriage with George, also the Maryland Middletons with same success (or lack), have done research in what is now West Virginia and a good deal of research in Virginia. Family tradtion says her father was one Thomas Middleton...about as common as the name Hannah! There was a Jane Middleton with two minor children Lettice and Hannah.....but no further records found for that group. Any leads would be appreciated, any data you can share would be appreciated for any of the above! Thanks! Shirley Wagstaff Bandon, Oregon (the land of heavenly things on the southern Oregon coast...remote as all get out....and no library!)

Sheri, I'm sure we have a connection somewhere.....Caroline & Hanover are to close for your Carneals & Timberlakes not to be kin to mine!
