I personally like to quickly scan through the information and see if it pertains to me or a family that I am interested in. I am interested in many of the families in Hanover, New Kent, James City, King William, King and Queen, as they all used to be part of New Kent. If it is a family that I am not familiar with or interested in, I delete the message. Otherwise I am very happy to "easedrop" on other peoples conversations. One thing that always disappoints me (although I have been guilty of it myself) is to see the message "get in touch with me at xxxx.com, and I will give you more information on this family". Sometimes I can get clues to my own families even though they are not talking about them specifically. Also, sometimes I have information and resources that can help even though I am not researching that family. T. Lindsay

Most of you researchers know that Hanover Co. is a "burned county" so you have to scramble to find references to your Hanover ancestors so that you can place them in a time and a place (most important!). A recent issue of Magazine of Virginia Genealogy (Vol. 39, No. 2, May 2001) published by the Virginia Genealogical Society, Richmond, VA has a too-brief article entitled Wills from Louisa County Chancery Suits by Janice L. Abercrombie. The first sentence of the introduction: Typically when there is a question about inheritance, the suit is heard in chancery court [my comment: in Virginia and some other states]. There is a case 1833 of Morris Cosby vs. Martin Bakers exors. The case mentions a spring lot in the City of Richmond. These are some of the names which appear in the case: Martin Baker, Jr. (son), William Carter (grandson), George W. Baker (grandson), lists a number of slaves without surnames, his living children. Those with the surname Baker (sons): Cleavers, Martin, Samuel, William. Daughters: Mary Brittain, Lucy Ellett and Catherine Moody. There is mention of a deceased daughter, Elizabeth Overton and mention of her children (not named). The case was presented at the Hanover Co. courthouse 22 Aug 1821. Another case presented in this article is that of Charles Thompson vs. John Winston. It concerns the estate of John Winston of Hanover Co. and presents his will. The will names his sons: Horatio Gates, William Overton. His daughters: Eliza Farrell, Maria Overton. His executors: Richard Morris, Charles Thompson, John Overton, Thos. Price and my brother William Winson. The will was written 19 May 1797 and witnessed by David Devenport, Jno. Brown, Wm. Phillips. It was proved at Hanover quarterly session 21 Feb 1798. There is another very interesting chancery suit against the estate of Samuel Overton. His will dated 18 Mar 1812. It is quite interesting in that he names two illegitimate children. The will is rather complex. Incidentally, I have been able to purchase some recent back volumes (with indexes) from the Virginia Genealogical Society. If you are a member, you get a 20 % discount on their publications, among them the last four volumes of Cavaliers and Pioneers, published in the 1990s. Happy hunting! E.W.Wallace

I was doing some Hall research for a friend and came across this little bit of information. In the Hanover county deaths register, the Sally Hall that died in 1870 was 69. Her husband was Fountain Hall. Parents were Sally & John Tyler. It looks like her daughter gave the info and her name was Rebecca Ann Perrin, wife of William Perrin who died in August 1870. He was 55, the son of Malvina and Jas (could be Jos) Perrin.
A question has risen regarding proper list etiquette. As list moderator, I have 2 hard & fast rules. The first rule is based on the purpose of this list, which is to share information regarding families of Hanover County. This is the place to do it. So..... 1. Info swapping is encouraged as long as it is on topic. It may be repetitive at times, but that is not a bad thing. Sometimes the pieces of the puzzles are minuscule, and the info may need to go around the block several times before that teeny, tiny piece is added to the mix to give someone a Eureka! moment. Mail filters and delete keys can be used to filter out messages someone does not want to receive. I prefer those methods instead of restricting the free flow of information. A member might unsub for a bit, giving a current topic time to run its course. My ancestors lived on the Hanover/New Kent County line. As I told someone, it all depended on what part of the farm they stood on when they talked to the census taker. Many went back & forth to Richmond or Henrico County. Sometimes an entire generation seemed to relocate en masse to Richmond. That is why I do not get upset when I see posts referring to locations in those areas. Just as many Hanover families "relocated" to Forest Lawn, they also went to Oakwood in Richmond and Washington Memorial Park in Henrico. Cemetery information is welcomed and appreciated. I am personally dealing with three burned counties: Hanover, New Kent & King & Queen. I will take info any way I can get it. 2. Personal concerns or complaints should be done off-list, privately between members. If there is a problem, it is better to address it first with the other list member or with me, the moderator. I can recall very few postings that did not contain genealogy/information pertaining to Hanover County families. No offense to anyone, but as long as there is genealogy or information in the email, it does not bother me If it does not pertain to me, I simply hit that good ol' delete key and move on to the next email. As moderator, I have found the list more or less runs itself. Members are polite and serious about genealogy. I choose not to disallow a rare post that is off-topic. Quite frankly, because 99.99% of the posts are relvant. I am not a censor, just a moderator. This is a forum for the exchange of information. It would do no good to exchange info off-line I would also suggest that any concerns be expressed privately bewteen members and if the list mode is generating too much email a switch to the digest mode might be in order. Thanks all for a great list! Lyn Moderator
I totally agree. I have had to unsubscribe to several lists because the webmaster or mistress (?) permitted chit-chat which did not pertain to general genealogy of that county. Incidentally, some of the surviving records of Hanover Co. ca 1733-1735 have been transcribed by Rosalie Edith Davis of Manchester MO. I believe she is still selling some of her books, particularly for Louisa Co., which was formed in 1742 from Hanover Co. Also, in the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy a few years ago, there were transcriptions of the Merchant's Account Book (of Francis Jerdone, as I remember, of Hanover Co.) which will place your ancestor in a time and a place, although I suspect Jerdone's store served several adjoining counties. Sorry for the delay, have had family medical problems. Sue, I don't show your Frances, but do have the following names (If any have a connection, will be most happy to send dates/etc). J. D. Blakeley V.K. Blakeley Laura L. Blakeley Fannie L Miller J.D. Blakeley Miles A. Miller (JD is James David) (VK is Virginia K. Bryant) If anything fits will send you dates from headstones. God Bless Marti
No offense to anyone but once you have located someone with whom you can correspond on a subject, please, use a chat room or direct email. Thanks Mickey! I located the New Kent Parish Record information. As I scrolled I noted Westmoreland Co, VA....tapped in to try to locate Cameron and Cople Parish Records which I did not locate. Can anyone help me locate the parish records for these two parishes? Thanks Ila
There was a query re William HAYNES in Hanover Co., VA Louisa Co. was formed 1742 from Hanover Co. At the same time, Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co. was formed from St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co. Perhaps this person is a relative of William Haynes: "At a Vestry Held for Fredericksville Parish ye 23d Sept. 1751 "Item Henry Hayns and Richard Durret do procession all the lands from pritties Creek between turky run and the County line to the little mountains." (From Rosalie Edith Davis, Fredericksville Parish Vestry Book 1742-1787, Vol. 1 [Manchester, MO: Published by author, 1978], p. 39) E.W.Wallace
