Karan, Needless to say, I was delighted to discover that mention of Dr. Vest. Thank you very much for forwarding it. Could you, perhaps, or could any one else on the List, enlighten me as to the location of the village of Gwathmey? Does it still exist? Is there still a Gwathmey Baptist Church? Concerning the Vest family in Louisa Co., VA. Louisa Co. VA was formed 1742 from the western part of Hanover Co. Hanover Co. is a burned county, and therefore few official records prior to the Civil War survive. Church records MAY be of assistance. Also the land patents as abstracted in the seven volumes of CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS are good people-finders. You may find these volumes in larger genealogical libraries, and I understand they are on the VA St ate Library website. This is an abstact of Louisa Co. DB. A possible predecessor: Fredericksville Parish [Louisa Co.] This is a tithable list taken in 1781 by Robt. (I understand that men were tithable when they were age 16. If aged, sometimes they were exempted from paying tithes.) Hope this helps. E.W.Wallace
Carole, Dr. Richard S. Vest owned the place on which I now live. I lived in the old house for twenty years before it burned. I can send you a picture of the old house and maybe more, I will have to look and see what I still have. Al
From the book "Hanover County Historical Society Bulletin, Volume I" page 241 History of Gwathmey Baptist Church by Glynn R Buchanan This is an exact quote from Mrs. Glynn's article: "I was delighted to discover the originial, hand-writtten "beginnings" of the Gwathmey Church - preserved in the Virginia Baptist Historical Society section, Boatwright Library, University of Richmond. The notebook stated that members of several Baptist churches met at the village of Gwathmey to "consider the propriety" of organizing a Southern Baptist church at said village on August 4, 1892. Dr. Richard S. VEST died 2 Feb 1902, probably in Ashland, Hanover County. He was born 26 Mar 1825 in Virginia. I believe it's probable that his father was William H. Vest (b. about 1801; wife Ann S.) of Hanover County and that William's father was Reuben VEST of Hanover County. Dr. Charles VEST (b. abt. 1798; wife Eliza Anderson) may be Richard's uncle Richard S. VEST was a physician who served as a captain surgeon in the Civil War. He lived in Richmond and bought 2304 East Broad Street from William CATLIN in 1868. The 1870 and 1880 VA Federal census reports indicate he lived there with his first wife, Martha, and their several children and later with his second wife, Dorothy Jeannette FLEET, and their children (Ernest and James). His family sold the house in 1905, after his death. The 1900 VA Federal census lists Dr. VEST, age 75, living in the Ashland Magisterial District of Hanover County. He owns his farm. I am seeking information about and links to Dr. VEST's forebears (parents, grandparents, etc.) as well as general information about the VEST family, who appear to have been long-time Hanover County residents. Guidance with regard to sources I might research would be most welcome. I am new to this list and have noted mention of Cocke's "Hanover Chancery Wills and Notes" and "Old Homes of Hanover County." Is it possible that the VESTs are mentioned in either? Carole Jackson Dilley Rhode Island

RICHARDSON vs. AUSTIN, 1832 RICHARDSON, John Allen, of Hanover County, on 1 January 1822, leased of William Smith AUSTIN, for a period of five years, a certain piece of low or swamp land being a part of the land on which the said AUSTIN now lives - near the Canal, Chicka- hominy Swamp. How about some time periods for these folks you are searching? I have some transcribed EARLY records, but Hanover has been around for a few centuries. My ancestor died there in 1733, and his sons seemingly all moved away, or else their records disappeared in smoke when Richmond burned at the end of the Civil War. No use my looking in colonial records (which are the ones I have) if your folks were residing there in the 1850s! E.W.Wallace

According to my records the physical location of the cemetery noted below is: Located in a field near a two-story frame house on Polegreen Road, near Route 360. It was the home of James Gilson Via at one time, who married Emily Wright. It is 300' spitj pf rpite 627 (Pole Green Road) and 350' west of its intersection of routes 615 and 627. As of July, 2000 the Layne/Lane headstones appear to have been removed. Judith http://www.southernroots.com -----Original Message----- From: Sheri T.
