    1. Re: [VAHANOVE] Attn all genealogists, historical/heritage groupmembers, etc.
    2. Pat, It took us four hours to determine who originally owned the property and the original deed of transfer is on the website link to show that the graveyards were excluded from transfer. The original owners were the Sydnor family (VERY wealthy family in Hanover County) There is a slave graveyard there, however, that is not where they are digging and they refuse to listen the local community who knows more about the history than these developers who did no "homework". They bypassed the Dept.of Historic Resources who could have told them this too. Pebble Creek was marked, but the markers were bulldozed. Yes, you're right...it truly is VERY sad. 2. Thanks for the answers. I am on Webtv so cannot access all the info in the website on this subject. Were the markers readable? And what happened to them? Were the Sydnors Quakers? Who were the neigbors of the Sydnors that may also be buried there? Pat

    1. [VAHANOVE] Gathright-McGehee-Tucker
    2. Caroline Gathright, in your post of Mar 8th to the list. It is odd that the Gathrights had purchased property from Tuckers as my other main line besides McGehee is Tucker. You mentioned that the McGehee house became part of the Cold Harbor Battlefield. Can you tell me the first names of these McGehee's who owned this 50 acre tract. Or the name of the ones who sold it to the Parks and recreation? Or theCounty of Hanover. Are your Gathrights married into the Tuckers from whom they purchased the land? Thanks Pat

    1. [VAHANOVE] Attn all genealogists, historical/heritage group members, etc.
    2. Good day everyone, I am bringing forward a very serious issue which needs to be addressed to anyone and everyone that is involved in genealogy, historical groups, or heritage groups. Anyone involved in these areas has bound to have done research on their own family trees, which would include birth & death records & perhaps burial locations of these family members. Depending on the time frames, many may be buried in private family cemeteries rather than church cemeteries or memorial parks. There is a serious problem occuring with these cemeteries being developed on either with homes, businesses, or roads/streets. Currently there is a VERY serious problem in Hanover County,VA that I would like to make you all aware of. You can find more information at: http://www.savinggraves.com/usa/va/pebblecreek/index.html At this site you can see for yourselves the treatment that human remains are receiving, the manner in which this process was started & has continued, and the evidence showing that this should be stopped immediately. (I do not live in this subdivision/neighborhood nor am I connected with this family) I have been involved in this particular incident since the beginning of the exhumation process and will continue to be involved because of the disgraceful manner in which this is being done and because this is NOT the first cemetery in this particular county in VA that this has been done to. I urge each of you involved in genealogy or historical/heritage groups to check on your own private family cemeteries no matter where they are. Have someone make sure headstones are still there, the area is cleared of debris or overgrowth, and that any burials there are recorded and documented with the appropriate courthouse. Cemetery laws, unfortunately, vary from state to state. Check the laws in your county/city and state to be certain how your own family cemetery is viewed under the law. Most importantly, please pass this information along to ANYONE you may know who is working on their own genealogy or a member of any heritage/historical groups. This is a VERY important issue which must be addressed by everyone. If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me privately/directly. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Sheri Millikin

    2. Sheri ,I read this entire report. I have a question regarding this. Since they are trying to say it was a slave graveyard what is the explaination for the caskets with handles etc that make it clear it was not a slaves grave? Also has anyone considered this may be a Quaker Graveyard. One reason I think this is because from other Quaker burial sites and comments by Quaker dscendants, they did not mark their graves in any way. This seem to be what may have been the case at Pebble Creek. If they have found no markers or stones at all it is unusual. Could ths have been a Quaker area ? Also does anyone know who the actual original owner of the property was or at least at time of Civil War.? This is really sad. Pat

    2. Jo, actually I have no Idea that they are for sure. my research of those Garthrights is sketchy at best we are still trying to put the pieces together. I have none of the names you have in my data base but that means nothing as I have three boxes of data yet to enter into my files. it could be there somewhere. I will put you in and if I come up with more. will let you know.. 1. [VAHANOVE] McGehee/Crutchfield
    2. I have been on the Digest mode but have now switched to the regular one. I have been looking for 47 years for my only brick wall Milton N.McGehee. I have amassed a huge collection of McGehee info in VA TN KY ALA NC and more . I am not on a PC but on a web tv so have to store everything in paper files. When I decided to try the Hanover list it was a sort of desperate attempt and one last try. It is a hard county to find info in. But I had found a hint of my Milton being there . I have so much on him and all his connected family from 1834 in Wilson Co TN and to Henry Co and then finally to Weakley Co TN. But I could never find his parents. Then I read the Digest last night and the info from Lyn Washington and my heart leapt right out of my chest. I believe you have found my Miltons family for sure. I can hardly write this as I am so excited. I hope there is no limit on the length of a post as I want to fill you all in on what I have .It connected quite a few names to Hanover Co.And maybe will help someone else. I will list what I have and can prove and then you all can see if it fits with your info. Milton N.McGehee b.1810-1816 in VA.Age listed on only census(1840) I have for him . Appeared in Wilson Co TN in 1834 married Lydia Alexander .Bondsman R.H.Thompson. Next married 1837 to Mary Drollinger dau of John and Mary (McCulloch) Drollinger.John had died before 1836 leaving Mary with many children. The bondsman for Milton was Wm Pillow.(Rev War) They stayed until the fall of 1839. Then entire family plus daughters of Mary Drollinger who married Nooners also of VA and Quakers ,plus James Phelps and wife who was a dau of Drollinger and Thompsons ,Landrums,Crutchfields,Tylers ,Barnett Brightwell and more all related and all sold their land and went to Weakley Co TN. They settled in a tiny place (where I was born) called Public Wells. It is still there but not on the map. The Rowletts of P.E.Co VA also went there about same time. Archibald Rowlett married to Guthrie/Guthrey.His sister Nancy married a James Miles of Halifax Co .She was widowed in 1848 so Archie went and got her in 1849 and brought her with her 7 kids to Public Wells. More on all this in next post. Milton and his wife Mary were on the 1840 census and also on the 1843 and 1845 tax lists. Mary shown owning 1 slave .Milton none. On 1845 tax it is all in Miltons name. Mary died in Childbirth on Dec 22 1845 with my gr-grandfather John Calvin McGehee. James Phelps and wife raised him.Milton had remarried a 3rd time to Anna Hooper in July 1846 and then a tree fell on him in Oct 1846 His dau Virginia who was 8 in 1845 went to live with Grandmother Mary Drollinger. 2 other children a boy Benjamin born 1842 and a girl Mary were raised by James Polk Tyler (wife a McGehee?) and the Tylers moved up to near Fulton KY just over the line from Weakley.More on them later. Milton and Mary are burried in the Cruchfield/Rowlett cemetery in Public Wells. The Drollingers and most of the grown children moved to Paragould Ark by 1857. My John Calvin stayed in Public Wells bought land from the Miles and married 1865 to Mary Susan Miles. They had 9 boys and 1 girl. . One of these boys is my grandfather Joseph Lee McGehee. The Lee name is used thru out the sons and other families as a middle name. I will end this now with these names all mentioned in Hanover .Crutchfield-Tyler -Foster-Golding(Gaulding?) Lee,Hooper, etc. If you recognize any more of the surnames listed above please let me know. And I need any more on these John -Joseph etc McGehees you listed in last post.Joseph who married a Crutchfield could have had more children then you list as there is a big gap in the ages of children listed. Also he could be son of Joseph brother John McGhee. Do you have wife of this John or any more info on him? Remember the name McGehee-McGhee-McGee are inter-changeable . The clerks or transcribers regularly mixed them up.We have 189 mispellings for McGehee. The name is pronounced McGee so it was easy to mispell. My Milton was educated and clearly on several occations wrote his name McGehee. Thank you so much. Pat

    1. [VAHANOVE] Updates available on Pebble Creek
    2. Good morning all-- There are several new updates on the Hanover County cemetery at http://www.savinggraves.com/usa/va/pebblecreek/index.html including a copy of the original transfer of land by deed from Deed Book Number 1 for those who would like a copy who may be related and/or interested in the surnames of Sydnor, Johnson, Pate, or Via. There are also media updates and copies of other relevant documents that can be viewed here as well. The body count is over 160 at this point & they have run out of room to dig. We will be obtaining topography maps/aerial photos next week and they will be posted as soon as possible. If anyone living within Hanover County would like to be of assistance, please contact me privately. We are meeting with the Circuit Court Judge next week. If you are interested in helping & do not reside in Hanover County, please see the "How You Can Help" section at the website mentioned above. There is also a message board available for you to post your comments. Please do! As we understand it, those directly involved in this matter are "monitoring this website closely". Every little bit helps at this point. Thanks again to all who have contacted me privately from this list. We ARE making a difference and hopefully something like this will NEVER happen to anyone else's family cemetery EVER again. Sheri Millikin

George W Barker 4. William E., Jr (b. ca 1832) *the above is not proven, my original source was Men of Matedequin by June Banks Evans....I have found this book to be the most valuable of my sources, it is what started my genealogy journey and after all these years, I am still able to go to it when I need to figure out possible scenarios. Sallie married Ellyson Gaulding which is my line. The above Sally Cruchfield died 23 Oct 1865 (per her son J F McGhee) Elizabeth Ellet is said to have been the daughter of Susanna Alvis Ellet I have long tried to discover more about this Tyler line. Tradition has William Tyler a brother or nephew of President John Tyler, but I have found no evidence and have my doubts. There is a Madison Tyler who weaves in & out....I suspect him to be a brother of William E Tyler Sr. Sallie and Ellyson Gaulding lived very interesting lives and from what I have learned about them, I am proud to be their 3rd g-grandaughter. They had a son named Tyler who was b. 22 Oct 1855 & died 1865. I suspect measles, but have nothing to base that on, just an "educated guess". Sallie and Ellyson both died in 1880, he in August, she in December. On the 1880 census, she is listed as suffering from "dyspepsia" which could have been anything from an ulcer to heartburn, to stomach cancer" They were both fairly young at death & I would like to learn the cause.

    2. Hello Mary Jane. Thanks for replying to my post. I am looking for the John C.McGehee supposedly in Hanover on a 1841 census? Is there some kind of reconstructed tax list for that year? I thought the census was in 1840? When were the county records burned? And yes there is a relation to the Thompsons but I am not sure yet how. Here is what I have proof of. Milton McGehee born 1810-1816 VA and son of John C. McGehee .Milton went to Wilson Co TN by 1834 or before and married there to Lydia Alexander. His bondsman was R.H.Thompson (uncle?). Milton again married in 1837. By 1839 he had moved to west TN where he died in 1846.The Tompsons also moved there . So I only have him on 1840 census inwest TN . His age could be wrong . Since according to LDS records he shows up with John C.as father in Hanover on this 1841 record I am wonderig if this Milton in VA is the father of my Milton in TN.Or if my Milton went back to Hanover in 1841 and returned to west TN by 1843. I did have the Louisa records you posted. Thanks . But I do not have Hanover records . Abraham b 1765 of Louisa Co VA in 1811 went to Wilson Co TN also and left for Ala by 1819. I have copious amounts of info on that line. And all lines connected to Abraham and all hs brothers. My Milton had one son born 1845 who he named John C. This is my gr-grandfather. Is there a web site I can go to that has info on Hanover Co? What can you all tell me about records that are available for Hanover. Any help appreciated. P.H.

Hardin was quite famous in his time and was the founder of Hardinsburg. Kentucky. That's all I have. Hope it helps. You may visit the two local newspapers websites at: www.mechlocal.com or www.herald-progress.com If anyone on this list IS directly related to the following, PLEASE get in touch with me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. In the Hanover County Clerk's Office you can find the reference to the cemeteries at PebbleCreek. The land was transferred by deed, recorded April 24,1866 in Deed Book 1, page 160, from Ed. G. Sydnor to F. W. Johnson. The tract of land consisted of 429 acres and in the deed 1 acre was set aside for cemeteries. Also the parcel was called Dungarvon in the deed. Oscar Via, Sr. obtained the land called Dungarvon by a deed recorded Nov. 11, 1918, from Rebecca Pate, Deed Book 67, page 49, and consisting of 239 1/2 acres. Thanks to those of you who have written privately w/the great support! It is much appreciated! Sheri Millikin Hanover, VA
