    2. In a message dated 4/29/2002 21:46:20 Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << It joins the Gist property on 605. Route 651 runs from 301 to 634. I have driven the road many times but do not remember seeing the Glebe. >> Well, I've pored over the map, Al, and it's hard to see how any property on 651 could abut property on 605 unless it's bigger than the acreage mentioned in the Historic Homes book. Like you, I've never noticed the Glebe on that road, but 651 isn't that long; let's go out there looking for it. The picture in Historic Homes looks old, and the house looks run down. Maybe it's back off the road, or we're just overlooking it somehow.

Thanks for helping those of us who had early ancestors in Virginia but who had itchy-feet (or hands) and left and did not always leave a good paper trail. E.W.Wallace southern California

    1. Re: [VAHANOVE] Location of the Glebe
    2. Hi Norma, I found the Glebe in a book titled Old Homes of Hanover County by the Hanover Historical Society. According to this book the Glebe is locked off route 651 in eastern Hanover. It was owned by John Jones in 1757 and has remained in the Jones family for several generations. It joins the Gist property on 605. Route 651 runs from 301 to 634. I have driven the road many times but do not remember seeing the Glebe. Hope this helps. Al Turner

    1. [VAHANOVE] Harris-Lowry connection (Possible) in Louisa Co., VA
    2. Dear Dorothy Carmack - and other interested parties Dorothy wrote: Theresa, I see that you have Lowry in your surname list. Do you have anything on Mary "Polly" Harris who married Aaron Lowry in 1804 in Louisa Co.? Patrick Harris gave consent for marriage. Who was the father of Patrick Harris? Who was the father of Aaron Lowry? Any information is welcome. My response: I don't have late info on Louisa Co. residents, but on a tax list of Louisa Co. ca 1782, there is this Lowry male, which may give you a clue as to your Lowrey family: (p. 144) HUNDRED #1, 20 October 1782 by Turner Anderson & Henry Garrett [they were the listing persons--generally captains of the militia or a constable] White/Black Absalom Lowrey - 5 [blacks] (Rosalie Edith Davis, LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA TITHABLES AND CENSUS 1743-1785 [Manchester, MO" Published by author, 1988], p. 95) Earlier, on a list 1782 by Thomas Johnson (p. 147 of Louisa tithable list): Absalum Lowry 1 (It is be noted that on this particular list, most tithables have their slaves listed by name; therefore it is assumed that the "1" refers to the tithable himself) Ask your public library to help you locate in your neighborhood (if you can) the volumes (3 of them) called the 1787 Census of Virginia by Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Love. These are tax lists for the counties claimed by Virginia, including all of Eastern Kentucky and what is now West Virginia--and perhaps parts of PA and OH. You may find later Lowreys clustered in the same neighborhood as the Harrises you seek. One Nathaniel Haris [sic] 1 is on the same tithable list One William Harris Junr 1 [ditto] Micajah Harris 1 Comment: I do not find a Patrick Harris in my lineage, nor is a Micajah. William Harris Junr--a could be, with such a common first name!!! I am descended from Major Robert Harris and his son Christopher. Patrick is a name not found in this particular Harris family. 1. [VAHANOVE] Colonial Williams Family of Southside Virginia
    2. Dear Diane Christie, You wrote, in response to my query: I'm a descendant of David Hughes Williams (16 Jan 1785-28 April 1858) I have some information on this Williams family that hasn't been listed in some time. What do you need? Which line do you descend from? Diane Christie Dear Diane: Thank you for providing some info re the son of Rev. John Williams of Meherrin Church-- David Hughes Williams--dates that is. Where did he live and where did he die? I am assuming Rev. John died in Southside Virginia. Am I correct? Do you have a death date for him? Like all genealogists, I am curious about these Williamses, but because of my advancing years, I am NOT collecting all the Williams descendants, many of whom seemed to populate the South. I will not live long enough to study them all. In answer to your question about my Williams ancestry: I am descended from two of the brothers of Joseph Williams, father of Rev. John Williams and thus grandfather of your David Hughes Williams. These two brothers are: 1. John Williams, Sr. said to be born 1704. Records of Granville Co., NC indicate he died ca 1769/1770 (administration bond filed by two of his sons and a close neighbor). His wife is said to have been Mary Womack, dau. of William Womack of Goochland Co., VA. This is my paternal grandfather's line. 2. Daniel Williams said to be born 1710. He patented land all over the Southside, some of which he gave/sold to several of his sons. He died testate in Granville Co., NC in 1759. His wife was Ursley, and we descendants argue about her maiden surname, of which we have NO primary proof. This is my paternal grandmother's line. Comment: Because brother Joseph Williams, said to have been born in 1721, left a pretty good paper trail in Lunenburg Co. and then died testate in Elbert Co., GA (I am told by descendants), I have a fair handle on him. What I am seeking, however, is information on the elusive brother Nathaniel Williams, said to have been born 1712. He did witness a deed in Hanover Co. ca 1733-1735. Interestingly enough, I have been in correspondence from time to time with descendants of Nathaniel Williams, and, they, too draw a blank about his residence and place of death, etc. There is reference to the land of Nathaniel Williams in some of the records of colonial Louisa Co., VA He lived on or near Mychunk or Mechunk Creek, and his neighbors were probably his nephews--sons of Mary Graves and her husband Henry Graves of Hanover Co. Mechunk Creek, according to the online USGS locators, is in Fluvanna Co. and Albemarle Co. I know there were some boundary changes from time to time between Louisa and Albemarle Co. Even though Nathaniel Williams owned land there, he seems not to have resided in Louisa Co. At least, I have not yet located a record in which he was a participant. Oh, the life of a Williams researcher!!! Especially when dealing with a burned county, such as Hanover Co. Thank you for your response. I would be grateful for information about the earlier lines of your branch of the family. E.W.Wallace (female)

    1. [VAHANOVE] Jacob Workinger
    2. I am looking for any information on Jacob Workinger (Wirkinger, Werkinger) who came to Monterey, Louisiana in the early to mid 1800s. We have a grave site but no information other than his name and that a local waterway is named after him. A headstone is being made for his grave and more information would be nice to put on the stone. Any and all information will be appreciated. 1. Re: [VAHANOVE] Stanley - Harris Connection
    2. I'm not sure this information will help you, but it is worth a try. Since Hanover Co. is a burned county, one frequently has to find substitute records. Louisa Co., VA was formed 1742 from Hanover Co., and in the deed books, at least for the early years, there are MANY references to residents of Hanover Co., VA. I use as my frequent references the several books compiled by Rosalie Edith Davis of Manchester, MO. In her book entitled Louisa County, Virginia Tithables and Census 1743-1785 [published by author, 1988], I find several Stanleys listed. (The Harrises, from whom I descend--at least one family of them--are too numerous to make any deductions). There are variant spellings: Standley, Standly, Stanley, Stanly. Here are the first names: John Sr. Nathan Isaac John Nathan Zachariah Zackr. Thos. Since you live in Richmond, perhaps you can find some vestry books which will help you to narrow your search. Much info about the colonial Harrises has been garbled--but the one to whom I am linked lived mostly in Louisa (after the split from Hanover Co.) and later in Albemarle Co. Sometime a prolonged study of the pre-Revolutionary land patents (which are online--at least the abstracts are) MAY help narrow your search. E.W.Wallace

    2. Ernest E. Johnson
    3. Hi......My source is primarily a long handwritten " book" by Judge Leon Bazile which I had copied from the VHS files........It seems to me Bazile was writing a book and this was a draft or notes etc. These Sheriffis in the 1780-1790 -1800 period had extreme problems collecting taxes in the post Revolutionary period......Many lawsuits.......Judgements in favor of the Commonwealth......Petitions to the Commonwealth involving as I recall the Sheriffs of 57 counties or was it 57 petitions..........A very serious problem My interest is in Richard Littlepage who was a deputy first under Geddes Winston and continuing to about 1789-1790........One lawsuit describes his "nefarious" practice of deferring collection where the taxpayer agreed to pay any interest or penalty.....But as could be expected, he wasn't very successful and lost all he had and as I conclude took much of the Littlepage family down with him. Any more on this matter would be gratefully appreciated.....
