    1. [VAHANOVE] Some Notes on William Shelton of colonial Louisa Co.
    2. These notes concerning William Shelton may be of interest to you. I collected them because I am interested in the family of Robert Harris and his wife Mourning Glen and in Robert's father, William Harris and Temperance Overton. Robert Harris and Mourning lived in Louisa Co. and for a short time, it seems, in Albemarle Co. The elder Harrises were of Hanover Co. Refer to some of the later works of Malcolm Hart Harris. The genealogies of some of these families as presented in the History of Louisa Co., however, are flawed and should be checked against the public records and church records, if available. Submitted by E.W.Wallace Rev Oct 2001 WILLIAM SHELTON. 2137. William Shelton, who was married to a daughter of Robert Harris--Lucy Harris--was probably a resident in King William Co., VA before he removed to Louisa or Albemarle Co., VA. Or, more probably, there were several William Sheltons. Shelton was one of two executors of his mother-in-law Mourning Glenn Harris whose will was proved in Albemarle March Court 1776. The Sheltons may have held land in both Louisa and Albemarle Cos. Also in Lunenburg Co., as indicated in a deed cited below. According to the index of Rosalie Edith Davis, FREDERICKSVILLE PARISH VESTRY BOOK, 1742-1787, Vol. 1, there were a number of Shelton males in that parish: David, Henry, Joseph, Thomas, William. At a vestry held for Fredericksville Parish ye 14th November 1771: (p. 97) Ordered tht James Kerr, Joel Terrell, Wm. Lewis, David Allen, John Barnett, Charles Goodman, Fra. Grymes, Samuel Rea & William Shelton do procession all the lands between Mechams River down to Carrs ford. the Three notched Road, down to Lewis's & the Fredericksburg Road. (Davis, p. 101) At a vestry held for Fredericksville Parish the 13th day of November 1783 at Charlottesville .... (p. 119) Ordered that James Keer, George Divers, John Marks, William Shelton, Charles Goodman, Claudious Bustard do possession all the lands from Mechams River down to Carrs ford, the three Notched Road, down to Lewises old place. (Davis, p. 124) Shelton was a neighbor of some of the members of the Dabney family as evidenced by the following Louisa Co. deed: Louisa Co. 1. [VAHANOVE] Help! Sheltons of York, Westmoreland, Hanover & Louisa Co, VA
    2. Dear Shelton Cousins, I've just started documenting my line of Sheltons of "Rural Plains" and I need help from experienced researchers who have already documented their lines back to John Shelton who built "Rural Plains", John's parents, and his children. I've got copies of many published genealogies from Whitaker's early book, Z. F. Shelton's version where he tries to correct Whitaker's earlier work, The Louisa County Historical Magazine, and various other published genealogies of the Sheltons of York, Westmoreland, Hanover, Louisa, and Albemarle, but NO TWO genealogies contain the same info. Whitaker's book has John Shelton, the elder's children as his brother, but Z. F. Shelton says they are his sons. Does anyone have a copy of John Shelton, the elder's will written in 1706 and recorded in 1708 Westmoreland Co.? If so, can I get a copy or at least get a list of the heirs named in his will? My ancestor is said to be William Shelton (1676-1734) who married Hannah (some researchers have Susannah) Armistead. Who has researched William and Hannah Shelton? Have you been able to verify that he was a son of John Shelton who built "Rural Plains"? If so, what primary document are you using? What about his children, any documents showing who his children were? It is said he had a son named William who died in Albemarle Co., VA and had a son named Henry who also died in Albemarle Co. Can anyone prove this? Has any been to "Rural Plains" and recorded the family history found in the chart on the wall in the hall? If so, could I get a copy of that genealogy for my documentation purposes? The only other copy is in the London Museum. What other sources of family history in found at "Rural Plains". I haven't been there yet and don't know if I can make it there to visit the Sheltons before the official transfer of ownership to the NPS and the Richmond Battlefield Park takes place next year. If anyone is actively trying to document this line, please contact me at [email protected] or reply here so others can follow along. I'm big into documentation and I really want to properly document this line and correct all the mistakes found in previously published works. Thanks, Robert C. Johnston, Jr. 139 Eagle Creek Drive Wetumpka, AL 36092

    1. [VAHANOVE] How Early Your Chapman Family in or Around Hanover Co.?
    2. I research the family of Major Robert Harris of Louisa Co., VA and his wife Mourning Glen. He is the son of William Harris and his wife Temperance Overton, all accounts say. At any rate, Robert had a son Tyree Harris (one of many who seem to have borne that name) whose first wife was reportedly a Chapman. This is what I have gathered about an Elizabeth Chapman, the widow of .... I wonder if she may be the first wife of Tyree Harris, who migrated to Orange Co., NC, part of which became Caswell Co., NC in 1777. His second wife was .... Simpson. Here is some of the work I have done on a female named Elizabeth Meriwether, whose mother was Jane Chapman. I wonder if she is the wife of Tyree Harris. (Tyree is not my direct ancestor, but he married 2nd) ca 1763 probably in Orange Co., NC one Mary Ann Simpson, one of several daughters of my ancestor Richard Simpson the elder of Orange and Caswell Co., NC. I am descended from Tyree's brother Christopher Harris who migrated from Albemarle Co. to Madison Co., KY where he died.) ELIZABETH CHAPMAN. WIFE OF TYREE HARRIS. Her maiden name is given in Malcolm Hart Harris, "Three William Harrises in Hanover County," VIRGINIA GENEALOGIST, V. 22. It is taken from "an authentic family record" furnished by the late Hon. John T. Harris of Harrisonburg, VA. Refer to biography of Tyree Harris for instance in which Elizabeth joined him in a deed. Is it possible that Elizabeth Chapman had been married previously to a man named Meriwether, or is this Elizabeth Meriwether the mother of Jane Chapman? The following deed indicates that Chapman property in Louisa Co., VA had been surveyed by Tyree's father, Robert Harris. Although relationships are unknown, the document indicates a Chapman family was known in Louisa Co. Louisa Co. DB A-409-410 1 Nov 1750. Jane Chapman of St. John's Par., King William Co., Widow and relict of Richard Chapman, to Elizabeth Meriwether of Fredericksville Par., Louisa Co. 24 pds sterling money of England. 400 acres; part of tract on Hiccory Creek given sd. Jane and her husband, Richard Chapman, decd, by Col. Nicholas Meriwether dec'd, being on Sumping Creek, a branch of above Creek ... sd. Chapman's corner ... land was laid off by Mr. Robert Harris 19 Mar 1749. /s/ Jane Chapman. Wit: Samuel Cobbs, Wm. Hudson, Jane Hudson. 27 Nov 1750 proved by oaths of all witnesses. (Rosalie Edith Davis, LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS A & B, 1742-1759 [Manchester, MO: 1977] p. 61) Guidance is requested. E.W.Wallace
