BAKER & DAVENPORT: Hanover County, VA Chancery Wills & Notes: None for those names at that time period A Sketch of the Early History of Hanover County, VA: LITTLE GARDEN, located just off Route 33, was built around 1740 by a blacksmith named JONES. He is believed to have been a soldier in the Revolution. For many years it was a home of the BAKER family. SPRING LEVEL near Beaverdam Depot was built prior to the Revolution on a 450-acre grant of land from the English crown to the Davenport family, from whence the name Davenport's Ford. In a cave near this home two men hid during the entirety of the Civil War to avoid conscription into the Confederate Army. Some Ancient Landowners in Saint Martin's Parish Hanover County, VA: A couple pages to scan and send to you from this book. Family Graveyards in Hanover County, VA.: None of the names Hanover County, VA. A Retrospective In Virginia State Library there is an original map of Hanover County dated 1820............Winn's meeting house and Baker's Mill are shown in the area now known as Elmont. North of Beaverdam, lying on the North Anna River, between Davenports Bridge on the West and Anderson Bridge on the East, is about 1600 acres known as the North River.... Hope this helps, the scans from the Ancient landowner book contain some good information. Ill get those to you as soon as I can. I spoke with Helen Kay Yates- who did those wonderful books on Hanover Cemeteries and she was of the same idea. I have so many leads to follow on finding info on this graveyard- one of them is if this is a Quaker burying ground there must be some Meeting House records of burials. At the F.L. Page library they have the Cedar Creek Meeting House Minutes, I need to go and read through them. Another thought- Since the early Stanley family were "dismissed" from Cedar Creek Meeting House due to owning slaves- the burying ground might have some slave graves there also. Thank you so much for reply- I can use all the help I can get! Sandy

Jennifer, thank you so very much for your kind offering. I am interested in any notations on a Matlock or Medlock family from the period of the beginning of Hanover County. Names of John and George and Charles are of particular interest and need. I know there was a John Matlock in Hanover in St. Martins Parish but unsure of which one and if the others were there as well. Thank you again for your help. Jennifer, Please look up William Phillips, John Phillips, Richard Phillips, and George Phillips. They were active in the area during the 1700s, but particularly between 1750 and 1800. Thanks for your offer. William Phillips, John Phillips, Richard Phillips, and George Phillips: Hanover County, VA Chancery Wills & Notes: I found these names in Wills but they were fro the mid to late 1800's. Family Graveyards in Hanover County, VA Volume 1: No Philips listed at all Some Ancient Landowners in Saint Martin's Parish Hanover County, VA: Bingo...I will email a couple of scanned pages directly to you. Hanover County, VA. A Retrospective: " The land around Beaverdam Station to the North was owned by the Philips family, some of whom until recently lived there. Mr. Lance Philips of "Little Plantation" near Ashland is of that lineage. But we remember the handsome and debonair Joe Philips, who could call the stations on the C & O from Richmond to Charlottesville in a voice of music and was a throb in the heart of every pretty girl at all points in between." Hope this helps. I will get those scanned pages to you soon( too much to type). Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VBC.2ACI/1232.1.1 Message Board Post: Yes, I need any and all help with these family branches! What I have is this: Susan Stanley married. William Strong, their daughter Susan Mildred Strong married Peter Chastine Wingfield <they are my great-grandparents> and they are buried in a small graveyard in Montpelier, VA. Recently with the help of the Hanover Hist. Soc. it was found that approx. 60 graves are in the old graveyard. Sad to say but no stones remain. I am trying very hard to find out who the other families may be that are buried there. It is my feeling that this graveyard is for the Stanley and the Strong families. It may be an old Quaker graveyard, and I have reason to believe that the graveyard may contain slave graves too. Thank you for any help! Sandy Satterwhite whitewoodgraveyard@verizon.net

In the 1820 VA Census Index, there is a John and a Nathan Hensley listed in Henrico Co., as well as a Lewis. Is this a clue?? Can't find Hensley or var's in St. Peter's Parish register or in Blisland Parish vestry book. Marge << B. abt 1732 probably in New Kent County VA. father may have been either John or Nathan Hensley. Her mother's first name may have been Anna. >>
