John - My Taylor's wound up in Elbert County, Ga. when Mary Ann Gaines b. 1742 Orange County, Va. married Captain Edward Herndon. b. 1738 Orange County, Va. She was the daughter of James Gaines b. 1710 and Mary Pendleton b. 1717. Mary was the daughter of Henry Pendleton b. 1683 Old Rappahannock County, and Mary Bishop Taylor b. 1688 Caroline County. was the daughter of Col. James Taylor I b. 1634/5 and his 2nd wife, Mary Bishop Gregory b. 1665. Thus, my Taylor line is pretty far back, but its still there. I was in Orange County not too long ago and parked in front of a delightful little park in memory of this Taylor family. The tentacles have stretched far and wide! Gouldin is located south of Route 33, south of Taylors Creek, between Chewsville (Crewsville) road and Oticon Road. It is a good distance from Negrofoot or Beaverdam. There is a road named Gouldin Road, on which a landing strip is located. I am finding this information in my Virginia Atlas & Gazetteer. If you need a scan of the page, let me know. Negrofoot is the intersection of Route 54 and Scotchtown Road. My 3ggrandfather ran the store and post office there in the 1860 - 1874 time frame. There was also a Goudlin in Caroline county near route 17. Pat Baber -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. My wife and I visited the old place called Gauldin/Gouldin several years ago but all that was left was a hugh home and one elderly (that's me also) Gauldin still lived there with his brother-in-law. Unfortunately, the old gent was of ill heath and wasn't able to give out too much information. He did say that at one time the home contained post office, hardware and grocery store. The place is on the map still. I was under the impression that the CRUMP's lived there at the place called NEGROFOOT but there were CRUMP's over in New Kent Co., near where GAULDING's also lived. My interest here is with Jemina CRUMP as indicated in my previous post. Let me hear from you. Appreciate it.

If you read the history of Hanover County, by Rosewell Page and other Hanoverians, they tell how the area got its name. During the 1700's a trusted slave was left with the care of his master's children. The slave killed the children. When the slave owner returned, the slave was caught and given the punishment of a cruel and painful death. He was tied between two young unbroken horses. A gun was fired and the horses in fear ran. The slave's foot was said to have been found there at Beaverdam- thus the awful name. Sandy Satterwhite
Jennifer - I don't think anyone has any idea how many cemeteries in Virginia are paved over and under sub-divisions, malls, cities, etc. There are probably more than you can even imagine. I have a friend whose grandfather, mind you that close, is buried UNDER the parking lot at the Methodist Church in Cartersville, VA. - the church needed the space for parking - there was no land avail. and they paved over their cemetery! No one knew what was happening until it was finished! If you could see Cartersville, one of the few remaining 'river towns' on the James, it has survived because it sits high on a bluff overlooking the river, and most 'yards' go straight down! However, that is no excuse... but the church has not even entertained re-interring the bodies... they don't have that kind of money. Just recently in Powhatan County, a local landowner fought and fought the site of the new Rt. 288, that connects I-95 outside of Richmond to I-64, because of a slave cemetery. The highway dept. paid for removal and re-interment, but she fought - said those graves had been on her family's property as long as there as been a home there - and this property is not too far from Monacan settlement, and the family were French Huguenots. She lost - and the highway goes over the site now - and through her land. Its really sad. Then, about a year or so ago, they were, and are still, building an upper scale housing development around the new state golf course in Powhatan and Chesterfield Counties. Again, graves were found, probably slaves, and once again, they were re-interred elsewhere... they did advertise for any 'kin' to contact them, some do not even do that! It happens all the time in his area. The article in the paper made it sound as if the paupers or crazies didn't matter. Over the years the stones could have been vandalized, broken or just carried away. If they moved graves at an earlier time, I'd think there would have been evidence of other graves. Here in Ky. they move graves all the time. If the developer is honest they move them. If not, they just grade over them. Laura Louisville, Ky.

Jennifer, It is indeed sad, but apparently it was legal and done with the permission of the descendants.
