Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2310 Surname: Farmer, Carr, Martin, Glass, Reeves ------------------------- Please read my Farmer family notes below. Any information that will help me connect Barnard Farmer to Frederick Farmer would be appreciated. My e-mail address is grfarmerjr@aol.com. The descendents of John F. Farmer and his father Barnard Farmer from Halifax County, Virginia and Stokes County, North Carolina have been researched and documented. The birth date and place of Barnard Farmer is unknown. Barnard married Mary (alias Molly/Polly Carr) on 27 July 1789 in Halifax Co. Barnard moved to Stokes Co., NC circa 1826 and he died there on 12 April 1841. John F. was born circa 1799 in Halifax Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Martin on 17 Dec. 1823 in Halifax, Co. John F. and his family migrated to Weakley Co., Tennessee circa 1838. John F. visited Stokes Co., NC several times after 1838 including the following. Multiple times between 1852 and the years following to participate in a legal case against Samuel Shackelford, the administrator of the deceased John Carrs will. In 1852 to sell land which was his part in the estate of John Carr to Fleming Priddy. In 1854 to give William H. Reves power-of-attorney. John F. died in March 1881 in Weakley Co., TN. The first task is to trace and document the ancestry of John F. and his father Barnard Farmer. The second, and related task is to specifically determine and document the relationship between Barnard (alias Barnett, Barnet, Bernard) Farmer; Frederick Farmer, Sr.; Frederick Farmer, Jr. and at least one other Frederick Farmer circa the late 1700s and early 1800s in-or-around Halifax Co., VA and Stokes Co., NC. The counties of Henry, Patrick, & Pittsylvania, Virginia lie between Halifax Co., VA and Stokes Co., NC. Halifax Co. deed records mention a Frederick Farmer, Sr., a Frederick Farmer, Jr., and a Frederick Farmer (no suffix) all from Halifax Co. Documented research reveals several clues. First, Virginia land grant and patent records show that a Frederick Farmer (no suffix) was awarded a land patent on Birch Creek in Halifax Co. in 1779. Halifax Co. will and other records indicate that this Frederick Farmer (no suffix) died in 1782. Therefore, there were only two Frederick Farmers over the age of 21 in Halifax Co. after 1782. Halifax Co. Personal Property Records verify this. Second, Halifax Co. deed records show that Frederick Farmer, Sr. was from Chesterfield Co., VA when he purchased his land in Halifax Co. in 1772. Third, Chesterfield Co. deed records show that Frederick Farmer Jr. was from Halifax County. Halifax Co. records show that he moved to Randolph Co., NC around 1786. Therefore, there was only one Frederick Farmer over the age of 21 in Halifax Co. after 1786. Halifax Co. Personal Property Records verify this. Observations of the signatures of Frederick Farmer, Jr., copied by county recorders, show that his signature was spelled out and signed Fredrick. This indicates that the Frederick Jr. from Chesterfield Co., VA; Halifax Co., VA; and Randolph Co., NC are one-and-the-same (see the Deed Tables on Pages 9 and 12 and the corresponding notes which follow the tables). The aforementioned should be considered when establishing the relationships. A Frederick Farmer sold land to Barnard Farmer in Halifax Co. in 1801. This Frederick Farmer signed his name using the mark X. Frederick Farmer, Sr. from Chesterfield Co. signed his name using the mark X. Halifax Co. Personal Property Tax Records seem to indicate that this Frederick Farmer and Frederick Farmer, Sr. originally from Chesterfield Co., VA are one-and-the-same. It is theorized that this Frederick Farmer is the father of Barnard Farmer. It should be noted that Halifax Co. records insinuate some relation between Frederick and Enoch Farmer. Halifax Co. personal property records show that Frederick had one son under the age of 21 in 1789. Later personal property records in 1789 show that Frederick Farmer has NO sons under the age of 21 and list Barnard (listed directly under Frederick) for the first time. Barnard is consistently listed under Fredericks name in personal property tax lists from 1789 through 1800. Halifax Co. court records show that Frederick Farmer was surveyor of the road from the Banister River Bridge to the county line AND that Barnard was named surveyor of the same road later in time. Halifax Co. marriage records show that Barnard offered surety at Fredericks daughters (Judith) wedding in 1797. It should be noted that a number of genealogies found on the Internet reference a Frederick Farmer, Sr. (spouse identified as Martha Hatcher) and a Frederick Farmer, Jr. (spouse identified as Obedience Adkins) from Chesterfield Co., VA. Chesterfield Co. deed records verify the marriage of Frederick Farmer Sr., and Martha Hatcher. However, Halifax Co. deeds clearly state that the spouse of Frederick Farmer, Jr. was Mary Boice (granddaughter of Thomas Finney). Furthermore, a Chesterfield Co., VA deed (Deed Book 7, Page 194) states that the wife of Frederick Farmer (Sr. - identified by his signing his name with the mark X) was Obedience. Therefore, it is theorized that Frederick Farmer, Sr. had two wives: Martha whose offspring included Frederick Farmer, Jr. and David Farmer; and Obedience whose offspring included Barnard Farmer and Matthew Farmer. Other genealogies found on the Internet reference a Frederick Farmer from Patrick/Henry/Halifax Counties (spouse identified as Elizabeth Metcalf). These genealogies purport that this Frederick died in 1782 and that his widow later married a Nathan Sullins. Halifax Co. deed, personal property, court, and marriage records verify that a Frederick Farmer died in 1782 and left a widow named Elizabeth Farmer who married Nathan Sullins from Halifax Co. War of 1812 Pay Roll Records for 1814 show that a Bernard Farmer was in Captain Ben. Goodes Company, Second Regiment of Virginia Militia, First Brigade, commanded by Col. John Ambler and was from Chesterfield Co., VA. Chesterfield Co., VA Tithables, 1747-1821 (Library of Virginia Microfilm #330, Frame #0138) List of Insolvents returned by B Goode list Bernard Farmer insolvent for the year 1821. However, Halifax Co. deed records clearly show Barnard Farmer as owning property there from 1801 to 1826. Halifax Co. marriage and deed records outline the sale of property and offering of surety at weddings which specifically name Frederick Farmer, Barnard Farmer, and/or John F. Farmer. A Matthew Farmer is identified as the son of Frederick Farmer in Halifax Co. Deed Book 19, Page 321. Halifax Co. records, and John F. Farmer genealogy research, tie the aforementioned to a Matthew Farmer and show a tie between the Farmer, Martin, Carr, and Glass families of Halifax Co. A Matthew Farmer is referenced in the Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files as born in Chesterfield Co., VA; a resident of Halifax Co., VA; and moving to St. Charles Co., MO in 1834. Another noteworthy relationship with Frederick and Barnard Farmer is that of the Nunnally (alias Nunnallee) family. Harbard Nunnally is listed in a Halifax Co. marriage record as marrying Judith Farmer, daughter of Frederick Farmer and Barnard Farmer offers the surety. Additional Halifax Co. records show sale of property by Frederick Farmer (& co.) to Harbard (alias Herbert) Nunnally.
