Subject: Re: [CLARKE] Benjamin Clark of Wake and Granville Co., NC Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 12:09:50 -0500 From: Joseph A Arlt <joearlt@juno.com> To: CLARKE-L@rootsweb.com, Slsamz@aol.com, CMW12635@aol.com, jamesclark@lanset.com, CLARK-L@rootsweb.com, MaryEGibson@cs.com Joe, Her name was Mary Fleming and not Nancy. I have a Nancy Fleming in my files totally unrelated to the Clark family. Mary Fleming was the daughter of a John Fleming. I only saw one reference to Benjamin Clark coming from Danville, Va. Charles Ward, an ancestor of Benjamin believes this is incorrect, and that he didn't come from Pittsylvania Co., VA. He also believes that Benjamin was only married the one time and had only the children mentioned in his will.. My feeling at this time is that Benjamin is the son of William Clark, who stood bond on his marriage to Mary Fleming. I believe that this William is the brother of Leonard and Charles Sorhoron Clark all of St. Mary's Co., Md. When their father, Leonard Sr. died in St,. Mary's Co., MD in 1750, the mother was left with four children, three sons and one daughter, all very young.. I don't believe there was a will but there was a settlement of the estate. None of the children were mentioned in the will. The estate was very small and it appears that the estate owed more than it was worth. William supposedly married Mary Heard of St. Mary's Co., MD , daughter of Luke Heard., and he inherited his father-in-law's farm. With no money from the family, how did Leonard, Jr.., later in Granville Co. have enough money to have slaves? This was in 1786, just two years after his appearance in Wake Co. Now he did (according to one source) marry Mary Messers and the only Messers in the area seem to have been concentrated in Haywood Co., NC.. Maybe the slave came from her family? He didn't inherit them from his father's estate. He was also crippled in the Revolutionary War. I understand that he suffered injuries to his four limbs. He would have needed help to make his way. Leonard was in Wake Co., NC as early as 1784, just a year after the end of the War. His brother Charles who was older, didn't appear in any of the census/tithe lists that I know of yet he was there, raised a family and died abt. 1822 in Granville Co., leaving a will. I suggest that William and his family also migrated to Wake/Granville Co.. and that Benjamin is his son. Hi Jim, et al.... (my ref #18215 & 12417) It could be possible that this is the same Benjamin. If he was of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., VA, He could have come down South to Granville & Wake Co, NC, was or got married to Mary/Nancy Feming/Fleming, in1782 , had at least kids Alexander & Agnes about 1782, then in 1785 was in Granville Co and then in 1790 in Wake Co. NC. Who did Agnes marry? Can you tell me anything more about her? (I assume the "1786 Tithe List/Census" was in Granville Co., NC?) Yes, both Benjamin and Leonard were enumerated on the 1786 Tithe List of Granville Co. Here is what I have at the present time. Leonard Clark 1784 Wake Co., NC 1785 Granville Co., NC 1786 Granville Co., NC 1790 Granville Co., Nc 1800 Wake Co., NC Benjamin Clark 1784 Granville Co., NC 1785 Granville Co., NC 1786 Granville Co., NC 1790 Wake Co., NC 1800 Wake Co., NC -------------------- He then "came to Buncombe Co. c. 1790. He purchased land on the Pigeon River.." according to the "Buncombe Co. NC, Heritage Book". (Haywood Co, Buncombe Co, & Rutherford Co. are located in the North Western part of NC). Had at least three kids Benjamin, Richard, & Alfred, 1793 to 1803 in Buncombe/Haywood Co., NC, with same wife or another. He dies about 1814 in Buncombe/Haywood Co., NC. --------------------------------- Do we have any info that would disprove this theory? Is he listed on the 1790 Census of Buncombe/Haywood Co., NC (which would say he was there and not in Wake Co., NC) Does anybody have his will? Wife & kids names in will? Any church records? Comments? (Jim: You mention as Benjamin's wife: "snip... And his wife. (this would be Mary Feming Clark) ...........Benjamin was married to Nancy Fleming 28 Dec, 1782....snip", Do you have the correct spelling of the name for the wife and where they were married?, Do you have her parents and when she died? Do you have her as the mother of the kids in Haywood Co., NC, also?) >From Joe ARLT........joearlt@juno.com......CLARK Clearing House...
