Dear listfriends, My daughter has a couple of days off from work, so we made a last minute decision to drive from Richmond tomorrow morning (Thursday) and spend some time looking for ancestral homesites in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. My wife decided to go along if we would stop at some antique stores. <grin> This trip is probably the ultimate in not having carefully thought-out plans before starting out. Oh, well, nothing like a little "spirited" adventure. But, I would certainly appreciate a little help and advice. Thursday we will drive to Halifax and Danville and spend two or three hours at each location. Does anyone know if the Halifax court house is open and what time they close? And, will the Danville Public Library be open tomorrow and be staffed with the genealogy society volunteers? I visited the library last year and those folks were fantastic. Haven't been to the Halifax court house in years. Anything I need to know before I get there? I know that my James Hodges had land on "both forks of Bradley Creek" and have information locating his land in the general area. It's in the northeast part of Halifax Co. Is anyone familier enough with the area to know whether there are roads near when the two forks come together? Or, where I might go to find out? Perhaps, the highway dept.? On Friday we will go to Chatham and spend a couple of hours in the Pittsylvania Co. court house. Can anyone tell me the hours? And, is there anything I need to know in advance? In fact we may spend the night in Chatham. Any recommended motels? James Hodges' son, Jesse, was born in Halifax Co. in 1754 but moved to Pittsylvania Co. where he married Elizabeth Collins in 1775. We know that in 1798 he deeded his land to Drewry Scrugs. The 454 acres of land was located "on both sides of Camp Branch" in Pittsylvania Co. I have not been able to locate Camp Branch? Can anyone help me with that? I have checked my USGS site but it did not have a Camp Branch. So now, I'm at you mercy and hope you are merciful. <grin> Even a smidgen of help would be appreciated. Happy Hunting! Jim Hodges Richmond, VA ps. I apologize to all of you who are on both the Pittsylvania and Halifax Co lists for having to face this twice. Also, my version of AOL doesn't have spell check!!!
