Greetings, My great-grandparents were Peter and Allie/Alice Chappell of Halifax Co. VA. Allie/Alice was a slave. I am not sure if Peter was also a slave. Christopher Carlton a white slave owner died in 1824 (probably in King + Queen County) Va. In his will Christopher willed to his daughter Polly Carlton "one Negro Esther and her future increase." A provision in the will was that if Polly died without issue, the slave Esther and any of her increase willed to Polly by her father was to go to Pollys siblings, and the issue of Pollys dead siblings. Polly died July 7, 1858, without issue. In Jan of 1859 the increase of "one Negro Esther," listed as my g-grand mother Allie and her children Willis, Daniel (my grandfather ), Eppa, George, and Henry, were bought by Joel Younger for the sum of $1,500. This sum was paid to the surviving siblings of Polly Carlton, and to the reps. of her dead siblings. =========================================================== Joel Younger had in fact had possession of Allie before he bought her in 1859, because I found in Slave Birth Records, Allie giving birth to three of her children, in 1853, 1855, and 1858, and the owner was listed as Joel Younger. In the 1870 Census for Halifax Co, VA, Peter aged 40y and Allie aged 35 were found with the following children: Willis 20y. George, 15y, Henry 13y, Peter 12y, Doctor 10y, Davis 9y, Bell 7y, Willy Ann 5y, Edward 3y, and Horace 6mo. In 1870 Daniel, (son of Peter & Allie) who was my grandfather, had married under the surname Younger, and was living with his wife Sue. When Sue married Daniel Oct 2, 1869, she listed her surname as Stovall. The parents of Sue were Primus and Mariah Younger. I suspect that Sue had been sold to slave owner J. B. Stovall, in the home of whom Daniel and Sue were married. In 1880 I again find Peter 50y, and Allie/Alice 50 y, with children Bell 18y, Willie 16, Doctor 20, Lee (Peter) 22y, Henry 23y, Eppy 24y, Edward 12y, Horace (Braxton) 11y, Milly 7y, and Corer 4y. Daniel my Grandfather and Sue his wife were living elsewhere. Other than the sale of Allie & children to Joel Younger & the births of children to Allie in 1853, 1855 and 1858, I found no other records whatsoever of Peter or Allie before 1859, or after 1887. In 1887 Peter was listed as the informant when Edward Chappell, one of his sons died of Consumption (TB). Allie was last seen in the 1880 census The oldest child of Allie/Alice Chappell was Willis, born about 1850. All the children of Allie named Allie and Peter as their parents, which means Peter was somewhere near Allie beginning as early as early as 1850. I don't know where Peter, the hubby of Allie came from considering the Chappell surname Peter and Allie were using in the 1870 census. Any help out there? Larry
