    1. HALIFAX Co. VA to CHRISTIAN Co. KY

    3. For several years I have been researching the Halifax Co, VA families who went to Christian Co. KY. The BOYDS and WHITES are two of them who left VA between 1790 and 1820. I have also been an avid reader of VAHALIFAX list for months. But today, I feel forced to correct what I feel is an unjust statement in a message today from Anna. Quote: "If you have ever been to Christian County, it seems to be soooooo poor. We visited there in 1990 and were struck by the visible poverty." This is quite harsh, and is totally unjustified. Christian County, Ky is a rural county, a farming community, with a number of small industrial plants---and it's county seat, Hopkinsville, is a very old town, with many ancient downtown buildings, including the courthouse. The downtown streets are quite narrow, and like many small towns the business district has moved to the outer edges of town where there was room for expansion. As is true almost everywhere you go, many of the inner city houses are old, small and shabby-but just as true are the lovely very old well-kept homes in other parts of the city. Our ancestors came to a beautiful part of Kentucky. There is no better or more prosperous farming land anywhere than in south Christian Co. KY. There are many fine old homes both in the little towns and on the farms. The northern half of the county has coal, oil, and smaller farms with abundance of timber. I invite Anna, and other researchers who have ancestors who sought this area of Kentucky, to come and see the laid-back, slow-paced, friendly, people of Christian Co------who would be amazed at being called "soooooo poor and proverty stricken". It is a term I've never before heard used about that county. My apologies to the list for sounding off like this. It won't happen again. Dot Carmack (living in Florida, but loving every inch of Christian Co. KY.)
