    1. HALIFAX Co. VA to CHRISTIAN Co. KY
    2. Dorothy Carmack
    3. For several years I have been researching the Halifax Co, VA families who went to Christian Co. KY. The BOYDS and WHITES are two of them who left VA between 1790 and 1820. I have also been an avid reader of VAHALIFAX list for months. But today, I feel forced to correct what I feel is an unjust statement in a message today from Anna. Quote: "If you have ever been to Christian County, it seems to be soooooo poor. We visited there in 1990 and were struck by the visible poverty." This is quite harsh, and is totally unjustified. Christian County, Ky is a rural county, a farming community, with a number of small industrial plants---and it's county seat, Hopkinsville, is a very old town, with many ancient downtown buildings, including the courthouse. The downtown streets are quite narrow, and like many small towns the business district has moved to the outer edges of town where there was room for expansion. As is true almost everywhere you go, many of the inner city houses are old, small and shabby-but just as true are the lovely very old well-kept homes in other parts of the city. Our ancestors came to a beautiful part of Kentucky. There is no better or more prosperous farming land anywhere than in south Christian Co. KY. There are many fine old homes both in the little towns and on the farms. The northern half of the county has coal, oil, and smaller farms with abundance of timber. I invite Anna, and other researchers who have ancestors who sought this area of Kentucky, to come and see the laid-back, slow-paced, friendly, people of Christian Co------who would be amazed at being called "soooooo poor and proverty stricken". It is a term I've never before heard used about that county. My apologies to the list for sounding off like this. It won't happen again. Dot Carmack (living in Florida, but loving every inch of Christian Co. KY.)

    2. Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2269 Surname: ------------------------- According to Bernice Dismukes book, "The Dismukes and Their Kin", the following is provided: "4-1. Fannie Walding born 8 February 1757, married Richard Boyd, son of Patrick Boyd and his second wife, Ann." (NOTE: I most recently discovered that Ann Douglas Boyd, wife of Patrick Boyd, married a second time to John Wells. This is documented in Halifax Orders 1770-1771 August Court, 1770.) 4-2. Sarah Walding, second child of Samuel and Mary Dismukes Walding, was born on December 10, 1758. 4-3. Richard Walding, son of Samuel and Mary Dismukes Walding, was born October 10, 1760 and died in Jones County, Georgia. His will mentioned a sister, Sarah Fambrough. William Fambrough received an inheritance from Richard's estate in 1812. 4-4. Owen Walding born December 26, 1762 4-5. William Walding born November 24, 1768 4-6. Lewis Walding born January 213, 1771 4-7. Anne Walden born October 20, 1773 (note spelling change) 4-8. Elijah Walden born April 10, 1775. All known descendents of the above mentioned WALDING-WALDEN, migrated from Virginia to Georgia, then to Alabama, Mississippi and other points west. See Georgia Genealogical Magazine No. 17, July 1765." My line is from the marriage of Richard Boyd and Frances (Fannie) Walding/Walden.

Wylliesburg PO is in the Roanoke Township District of Charlotte County. This information came from the 1870 census. Elisha Hundley was a wealthy land owner. At this time in his life, he had raised his children and only his wife(?), Susan, age 56 was living with him and two Harvey relatives. Only two of the four Harvey were living with Elisha Hundley at this time Martha age 21 and Thomas age 24. Elisha Hundley was trustee of Martha's estate. Her wedding was held in Elisha's home. Martha Harvey was engaged to marry Christoph Hanewinckel on September 3, 1870. There was a close connect between the families, but what??? I was looking for the family of the John C. Harvey when I discovered John C. Harvey's children living with Elisha Hundley. I am searching for the Hundley family to discover who John C. Harvey's family was and why his children were living with Elisha Hundley. I will be happy to share any information and would like to have information about the Hundley family. 2. Peggy, it is so interesting that so many from Halifax moved to Christian Co., KY in very early 1800's. We do research on the TALLEY name in Halifax, and Nathaniel Talley and his wife Sarah, sold out in early 1800 and moved to Christian Co., KY. Actually they moved into Cumberland Co. first then after he died in 1816 or so, she moved over into Christian Co. Land must have opened there around this date. If you have ever been to Christian County, it seems to be soooooo poor. We visited there in 1990 and were struck by the visible poverty. Didn't find any land records for Nathaniel there, but they do have GOOD records. Anna

Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2258 Surname: WALDEN, DISMUKE, SEALS, BOYD ------------------------- I am looking for info on the descendants and ancestors of Samuel WALDEN whose 1779 will names sons Richard, Owen, William Lewis, & Elijah. Daughters were Frances who m. Richard BOYD, Sarah and Anne. It is said that Samuel was m. 1) to Jane SEALS or SILLS in King & Queen county. I figure he belongs to the King & Queen/Caroline Co. Waldens somehow, but can't figure how. I know that Frances Fanny Walden Boyd went to Georgia. It's said that her brother Elijah also went to Georgia. Can anyone either disprove or confirm that Elijah also went to Georgia? I'd like to find out more, because my Elijah WALDEN was born about 1777 in VA -- he went to Kentucky and then on to Indiana. He seems to be constantly associating with people from Pittsylvania, Halifax and Henry counties. It would seem to be a fit except for this Georgia story! Thanks. Gail

Chapter 2 in the book gives some history on the earliest black schools, such as: 1. The Antrim Church and Mission School, 2. McKinley Institute 3. Williams Normal and Industrial Institute, aka Williams Normal and previously known as the South Boston (VA) Institute. 4. Mizpath Elementary School. 5. The years for which graduates names are printed are, 1936 through 1969. In chapter 8 of the book are "SUCCESS STORIES," giving some history of graduates after they left the Halifax Schools. This book also gave names of the persons on the teaching staff, information on the years they taught, types of certificate or degree they held, the College/University they attended, subjects they were authorized to teach, taught, and period of employment.
