    3. Subject: Re: [CLARKE] Benjamin Clark of Wake and Granville Co., NC Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 12:09:50 -0500 From: Joseph A Arlt <joearlt@juno.com> To: CLARKE-L@rootsweb.com, Slsamz@aol.com, CMW12635@aol.com, jamesclark@lanset.com, CLARK-L@rootsweb.com, MaryEGibson@cs.com Joe, Her name was Mary Fleming and not Nancy. I have a Nancy Fleming in my files totally unrelated to the Clark family. Mary Fleming was the daughter of a John Fleming. I only saw one reference to Benjamin Clark coming from Danville, Va. Charles Ward, an ancestor of Benjamin believes this is incorrect, and that he didn't come from Pittsylvania Co., VA. He also believes that Benjamin was only married the one time and had only the children mentioned in his will.. My feeling at this time is that Benjamin is the son of William Clark, who stood bond on his marriage to Mary Fleming. I believe that this William is the brother of Leonard and Charles Sorhoron Clark all of St. Mary's Co., Md. When their father, Leonard Sr. died in St,. Mary's Co., MD in 1750, the mother was left with four children, three sons and one daughter, all very young.. I don't believe there was a will but there was a settlement of the estate. None of the children were mentioned in the will. The estate was very small and it appears that the estate owed more than it was worth. William supposedly married Mary Heard of St. Mary's Co., MD , daughter of Luke Heard., and he inherited his father-in-law's farm. With no money from the family, how did Leonard, Jr.., later in Granville Co. have enough money to have slaves? This was in 1786, just two years after his appearance in Wake Co. Now he did (according to one source) marry Mary Messers and the only Messers in the area seem to have been concentrated in Haywood Co., NC.. Maybe the slave came from her family? He didn't inherit them from his father's estate. He was also crippled in the Revolutionary War. I understand that he suffered injuries to his four limbs. He would have needed help to make his way. Leonard was in Wake Co., NC as early as 1784, just a year after the end of the War. His brother Charles who was older, didn't appear in any of the census/tithe lists that I know of yet he was there, raised a family and died abt. 1822 in Granville Co., leaving a will. I suggest that William and his family also migrated to Wake/Granville Co.. and that Benjamin is his son. Hi Jim, et al.... (my ref #18215 & 12417) It could be possible that this is the same Benjamin. If he was of Danville, Pittsylvania Co., VA, He could have come down South to Granville & Wake Co, NC, was or got married to Mary/Nancy Feming/Fleming, in1782 , had at least kids Alexander & Agnes about 1782, then in 1785 was in Granville Co and then in 1790 in Wake Co. NC. Who did Agnes marry? Can you tell me anything more about her? (I assume the "1786 Tithe List/Census" was in Granville Co., NC?) Yes, both Benjamin and Leonard were enumerated on the 1786 Tithe List of Granville Co. Here is what I have at the present time. Leonard Clark 1784 Wake Co., NC 1785 Granville Co., NC 1786 Granville Co., NC 1790 Granville Co., Nc 1800 Wake Co., NC Benjamin Clark 1784 Granville Co., NC 1785 Granville Co., NC 1786 Granville Co., NC 1790 Wake Co., NC 1800 Wake Co., NC -------------------- He then "came to Buncombe Co. c. 1790. He purchased land on the Pigeon River.." according to the "Buncombe Co. NC, Heritage Book". (Haywood Co, Buncombe Co, & Rutherford Co. are located in the North Western part of NC). Had at least three kids Benjamin, Richard, & Alfred, 1793 to 1803 in Buncombe/Haywood Co., NC, with same wife or another. He dies about 1814 in Buncombe/Haywood Co., NC. --------------------------------- Do we have any info that would disprove this theory? Is he listed on the 1790 Census of Buncombe/Haywood Co., NC (which would say he was there and not in Wake Co., NC) Does anybody have his will? Wife & kids names in will? Any church records? Comments? (Jim: You mention as Benjamin's wife: "snip... And his wife. (this would be Mary Feming Clark) ...........Benjamin was married to Nancy Fleming 28 Dec, 1782....snip", Do you have the correct spelling of the name for the wife and where they were married?, Do you have her parents and when she died? Do you have her as the mother of the kids in Haywood Co., NC, also?) >From Joe ARLT........joearlt@juno.com......CLARK Clearing House... 3. Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2314 Surname: Comer, Godsey ------------------------- Hello, I'm doing research on the Comer branch of my tree. There is a chance that my line originally came from Halifax County. Is anyone familiar with the following line? Henry Campbell Comer supposedly came from VA and is not part of the German Comers, but the English Comers. My main goal is to find the parents of Henry Campbell Comer and how he got to NC. Henry Campbell Comer abt.1819-1885 m. Martha France Godsey 1822-1907 and they had seven children. I believe Henry and Martha both died in Rockingham County, NC but unclear from the information I received. Henry C. COMMER and Martha F. GODSEY married 16 Feb 1842 according to Rockingham County, NC records. There children were: Elizabeth Ann, Robert Wiley, Luke F., William Thomas, Willie, and two unknown daughters who went West. William Thomas "Bud" Comer (b.4/24/1843) married Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Wilson. They had 9 children, all born in Rockingham County before moving to Surry County, NC. Henry Frank, Corrinta Louvicie, Thomas Beasley (1871-1896), Martha Kathleen, Walter Sidney, Robert P., James Acie, John Webster, Cue Eliza Thomas Beasley had one child, Tommie B. (1897-1982), with Martha Ruth Jones (I had Mary/Molly Cora Jones.) Tommie B. was my great-grandmother. She married Luther Sam Abraham Dockery. Does this help with any ancestral links? Thanks for any help, Chris

    3. Joe, This is my line and I believe him to be the son of Leonard Clark of St. Mary's Co., MD who died in 1750, and the brother of Charles Sothoron Clark of Granville Co., NC. I don't think there will ever be a conclusive connection but In my heart I do believe that these Leonard's are one and the same. i hae therefore made a connection to the Leonard in Stl Mary's Co., Md in my database and changed the date of birth for my Leonard from abt 1754 to 1749-1750. 1. Farmer Family of Halifax/Chesterfield Co's, VA
    2. Bob Farmer
    3. Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2310 Surname: Farmer, Carr, Martin, Glass, Reeves ------------------------- Please read my Farmer family notes below. Any information that will help me connect Barnard Farmer to Frederick Farmer would be appreciated. My e-mail address is grfarmerjr@aol.com. The descendents of John F. Farmer and his father Barnard Farmer from Halifax County, Virginia and Stokes County, North Carolina have been researched and documented. The birth date and place of Barnard Farmer is unknown. Barnard married Mary (alias Molly/Polly Carr) on 27 July 1789 in Halifax Co. Barnard moved to Stokes Co., NC circa 1826 and he died there on 12 April 1841. John F. was born circa 1799 in Halifax Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Martin on 17 Dec. 1823 in Halifax, Co. John F. and his family migrated to Weakley Co., Tennessee circa 1838. John F. visited Stokes Co., NC several times after 1838 including the following. Multiple times between 1852 and the years following to participate in a legal case against Samuel Shackelford, the administrator of the deceased John Carr’s will. In 1852 to sell land which was his part in the estate of John Carr to Fleming Priddy. In 1854 to give William H. Reves power-of-attorney. John F. died in March 1881 in Weakley Co., TN. The first task is to trace and document the ancestry of John F. and his father Barnard Farmer. The second, and related task is to specifically determine and document the relationship between Barnard (alias Barnett, Barnet, Bernard) Farmer; Frederick Farmer, Sr.; Frederick Farmer, Jr. and at least one other Frederick Farmer circa the late 1700s and early 1800s in-or-around Halifax Co., VA and Stokes Co., NC. The counties of Henry, Patrick, & Pittsylvania, Virginia lie between Halifax Co., VA and Stokes Co., NC. Halifax Co. deed records mention a Frederick Farmer, Sr., a Frederick Farmer, Jr., and a Frederick Farmer (no suffix) all from Halifax Co. Documented research reveals several clues. First, Virginia land grant and patent records show that a Frederick Farmer (no suffix) was awarded a land patent on Birch Creek in Halifax Co. in 1779. Halifax Co. will and other records indicate that this Frederick Farmer (no suffix) died in 1782. Therefore, there were only two Frederick Farmers over the age of 21 in Halifax Co. after 1782. Halifax Co. Personal Property Records verify this. Second, Halifax Co. deed records show that Frederick Farmer, Sr. was from Chesterfield Co., VA when he purchased his land in Halifax Co. in 1772. Third, Chesterfield Co. deed records show that Frederick Farmer Jr. was from Halifax County. Halifax Co. records show that he moved to Randolph Co., NC around 1786. Therefore, there was only one Frederick Farmer over the age of 21 in Halifax Co. after 1786. Halifax Co. Personal Property Records verify this. Observations of the signatures of Frederick Farmer, Jr., copied by county recorders, show that his signature was spelled out and signed “Fredrick.” This indicates that the Frederick Jr. from Chesterfield Co., VA; Halifax Co., VA; and Randolph Co., NC are one-and-the-same (see the Deed Tables on Pages 9 and 12 and the corresponding notes which follow the tables). The aforementioned should be considered when establishing the relationships. A Frederick Farmer sold land to Barnard Farmer in Halifax Co. in 1801. This Frederick Farmer signed his name using the mark X. Frederick Farmer, Sr. from Chesterfield Co. signed his name using the mark X. Halifax Co. Personal Property Tax Records seem to indicate that this Frederick Farmer and Frederick Farmer, Sr. originally from Chesterfield Co., VA are one-and-the-same. It is theorized that this Frederick Farmer is the father of Barnard Farmer. It should be noted that Halifax Co. records insinuate some relation between Frederick and Enoch Farmer. Halifax Co. personal property records show that Frederick had one son under the age of 21 in 1789. Later personal property records in 1789 show that Frederick Farmer has NO sons under the age of 21 and list Barnard (listed directly under Frederick) for the first time. Barnard is consistently listed under Frederick’s name in personal property tax lists from 1789 through 1800. Halifax Co. court records show that Frederick Farmer was surveyor of the road from the Banister River Bridge to the county line AND that Barnard was named surveyor of the same road later in time. Halifax Co. marriage records show that Barnard offered surety at Frederick’s daughter’s (Judith) wedding in 1797. It should be noted that a number of genealogies found on the Internet reference a Frederick Farmer, Sr. (spouse identified as Martha Hatcher) and a Frederick Farmer, Jr. (spouse identified as Obedience Adkins) from Chesterfield Co., VA. Chesterfield Co. deed records verify the marriage of Frederick Farmer Sr., and Martha Hatcher. However, Halifax Co. deeds clearly state that the spouse of Frederick Farmer, Jr. was Mary Boice (granddaughter of Thomas Finney). Furthermore, a Chesterfield Co., VA deed (Deed Book 7, Page 194) states that the wife of Frederick Farmer (Sr. - identified by his signing his name with the mark “X’) was Obedience. Therefore, it is theorized that Frederick Farmer, Sr. had two wives: Martha whose offspring included Frederick Farmer, Jr. and David Farmer; and Obedience whose offspring included Barnard Farmer and Matthew Farmer. Other genealogies found on the Internet reference a Frederick Farmer from Patrick/Henry/Halifax Counties (spouse identified as Elizabeth Metcalf). These genealogies purport that this Frederick died in 1782 and that his widow later married a Nathan Sullins. Halifax Co. deed, personal property, court, and marriage records verify that a Frederick Farmer died in 1782 and left a widow named Elizabeth Farmer who married Nathan Sullins from Halifax Co. War of 1812 Pay Roll Records for 1814 show that a Bernard Farmer was in Captain Ben. Goode’s Company, Second Regiment of Virginia Militia, First Brigade, commanded by Col. John Ambler and was from Chesterfield Co., VA. Chesterfield Co., VA Tithables, 1747-1821 (Library of Virginia Microfilm #330, Frame #0138) List of Insolvents returned by B Goode list Bernard Farmer insolvent for the year 1821. However, Halifax Co. deed records clearly show Barnard Farmer as owning property there from 1801 to 1826. Halifax Co. marriage and deed records outline the sale of property and offering of surety at weddings which specifically name Frederick Farmer, Barnard Farmer, and/or John F. Farmer. A Matthew Farmer is identified as the son of Frederick Farmer in Halifax Co. Deed Book 19, Page 321. Halifax Co. records, and John F. Farmer genealogy research, tie the aforementioned to a Matthew Farmer and show a tie between the Farmer, Martin, Carr, and Glass families of Halifax Co. A Matthew Farmer is referenced in the Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files as born in Chesterfield Co., VA; a resident of Halifax Co., VA; and moving to St. Charles Co., MO in 1834. Another noteworthy relationship with Frederick and Barnard Farmer is that of the Nunnally (alias Nunnallee) family. Harbard Nunnally is listed in a Halifax Co. marriage record as marrying Judith Farmer, daughter of Frederick Farmer and Barnard Farmer offers the surety. Additional Halifax Co. records show sale of property by Frederick Farmer (& co.) to Harbard (alias Herbert) Nunnally.

    3. I agree 100% !! We have found the people working in the offices at Halifax to be wonderful! We also have been favorably impressed with the people in Halifax County, so much so that we want to move there. We have visited churches and real estate people and found all to be very gracious and helpful. There are some wonderful views on River Rd. and Mountain Rd. that would be great places to build. One doctor there said that it was like living in Green Acres. My husband's family had connections there and that is why we started going. Also to eat at Ernie's! 3. Subject: Alexander Clark, son of Benjamin Clark Resent-From: NCWAKE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2001 21:26:28 EST From: CMW12635@aol.com To: NCWAKE-L@rootsweb.com It appears then that there were two Benjamin Clarks, the one b. abt 1758 who was in Granville Co. and Wake Co., NC.. Charles Sothoron Clark b. abt 1742 and Leonard Clark b. abt 1749,, both of St. Mary's Co., Md. who both appear in Wake and Granville co., NC records, didn't have a brother Benjamin but did have an uncle who might have migrated to the area abt.. the same time. The uncle Benjamin, was born abt. 1721, so this Benjamin probably isn't the Benjamin Clark of Granville Co and Wake Co., NC who was the father of Alexander. Clark. I am sure they are connected, possibly a son? The other Benjamin Clark of Haywood Co., NC and from "Danville, Va" on is probably also connected but how I don't know. We talk about naming patterns, well this Benjamin had a son by the name of Alfred I Clark. My ancestor, Leonard Clark, a son of the Leonard Clark listed above also named a son, Alfred Clark. This name was passed down into the following generation in my family as was the name Alfred in the Benjamin Clark of Haywood Co., NC line. Your thoughts? Help?
