Greetings, I am seeking info on a white Adolphus CHANDLER. Adolphus 45y has $1,400 Real Estate, and $1,200 in per property, is found in 1860 census in Halifax Co Va. Adolphus was also listed in the 1860 Slave Schedules as having had 6 slaves. In 1860 Adolphus is living with free Blacks: Melunia (SP) Byrd 40y, with $ 100 in Real Estate, $ 50 in per property Susan Byrd 40y, and Susan Byrd 8 mo. In 1870 I did not find Adolphus. Adolphus died of Pneumonia 15 Dec. 1872, listed as being 50y of age. His parent was listed as Elizabeth. I suspect my great grandmother Nannie Chandler was a slave of Adolphus. Larry

Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Halifax/12283 Surname: Gregory ------------------------- Captain John C. Gregory raised a company of infantry in Halifax County about March 1862, called High Hill Greys or Gregory's Company. Capt. Gregory died of typhoid, supposedly on a hospital "ship" out of Richmond, before November 1862. Does anyone have record about his service or that of his infantry company (where they served, etc.)? They are not recorded as part of a regular combat regiment, but they weren't local defense either. Capt. Gregory had descendants still living near Virgilina within the past decade or so, from his marriage to Joanna Baynham.

I'm trying to find out who his parents are and how he got to Rockingham County, North Carolina. Henry Campbell Comer supposedly came from VA and is not part of the German Comers, but the English Comers. Henry Campbell Comer abt.1819-1885 m. Martha France Godsey 1822-1907 and they had seven children. I believe Henry and Martha both died in Rockingham County, NC but unclear from the information I received. Henry C. COMMER and Martha F. GODSEY married 16 Feb 1842 according to Rockingham County, NC records. Their children were: Elizabeth Ann, Robert Wiley, Luke F., William Thomas, Willie, and two unknown daughters who went West. William Thomas "Bud" Comer (b.4/24/1843) married Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Wilson. They had 9 children, all born in Rockingham County before moving to Surry County, NC. Henry Frank, Corrinta Louvicie, Thomas Beasley (1871-1896), Martha Kathleen, Walter Sidney, Robert P., James Acie, John Webster, Cue Eliza Thomas Beasley had one child, Tommie B. (1897-1982), with Martha Ruth Jones (I had Mary/Molly Cora Jones.) Tommie B. was my great-grandmother. She married Luther Sam Abraham Dockery. Does this help with any ancestral links? Thanks for any help, Chris

Greetings, I am repeating a previous offer. I have a book sent to me as a gift by a friend who found it while passing through Halifax County Va. The book is titled: "The History of the Education of Black Citizens in Halifax County: 1866-1969." The book was written by W. C. Edwards (W. C. Edwards, served as Principal of the school from 1934 to 1966), Preston M. Royster, and Lazarus Bates, (Lazarus followed W. C. Edwards as Principle). The book was published in 1979 by Bannister Press, Springfield, VA. It was purchased at: South Boston Historical Museum, 801 N. Main Street, South Boston, Va. 24592 Tel--- 804-572-9200. The book is soft cover, cost abt $6, + shipping, and contains 261 pages, I have no connection with this book---- you pays your money, and you takes your chances. I am giving this info only because someone might be able to use it. The book contains some history on black education in Halifax Co. Va. Chapter 2 in the book gives some history on the earliest black schools, such as: 1. The Antrim Church and Mission School, founded abt 1877. 2. McKinley Institute largley remembered as the Meadville School, founded in 1893 by a Jamacian, Professor Caleb G. Robinson. 3. Williams Normal and Industrial Institute, aka Williams Normal and previously known as the South Boston (VA) Institute, established prior to 1900. 4. Mizpath Elementary School founded prior to 1912. 5. The School In The Backyard, A one room school started in his back yard by Rev. Parham B. Ragland. -------- Chapter 4 mentions 1. Booker T. Washington High School 1930-1948 , serving only South Boston Va. later merged with Halifax Training School. The names of the five Principals of Booker T. are given. 2. Halifax Training School 1920-1956, The names of the five principals are given. The name was changed in 1956 to Mary M. Bethune High School 1956-1969 ====== There are names in the book of graduates from the all black "Halifax Training School," later renamed "Mary M. Bethune High School." The years for which graduates names are printed are, 1936 through 1969. In chapter 8 of the book are "SUCCESS STORIES," giving some history of graduates after they left the Halifax Schools. This book also gave names of the persons on the teaching staff, information on the years they taught, types of certificate or degree they held, the College/University they attended, subjects they were authorized to teach, taught, and period of employment. I will do lookups of Graduates, and Staff. In order to avoid clogging up the list for those not interested, I will not answer requests posted to this list. Send your request to me privately at: Lchand3835@aol.com. Larry.
