Arlina's message is a great deal of interest to me. My gg grandfather was Stephen Jones from Halifax Co, VA. He was born 11/4/1801 in Halifax, VA and died in 1886 in Shelby County, TN. He married Nancy Annie Griffin of Mecklenburg Co, VA on 7/25/1826. Known brothers are Robert and Richard Jones. Robert settled in NC and Richard settled in Shelby Co, TN along with Stephen. It seems highly probably to me that my Stephen Jones and brothers are related to Arlina's Stephen and Richard. I don't have proof, but the with the same names it seems that it would be more than a coincidence if not. My question is are the children of Stephen Jones, mentioned by Arlina, stated in the Power of Attorney? Arlina, do you know? This could tie down my search for my Stephen's parents. Arlina...probably an uncle or older brother. Male members of the family took over guardianship of the minor children when they were left without a father. Even if they had a mother, they were considered orphans.

Smith. My G-Grandfather was Thomas Patrick Smith b 1842/1844, married to Mary Ann Dixon/Dickson in Halifax Co, VA on Dec 25, 1870, d 1895/1900. They had four children: Lee Tollivar b Oct 17, 1869, Hallie B. b about 1872, Martha (Pattie) Ellen b Mar 22, 1878, Lou Somer b Aug 31, 1884. The Halifax Co, VA Census for 1860 listed two Smiths named Henry. The first: Henry T. Smith age 53, farmer; Polly C. Smith age 56; children: Eliza age 29, Louisa age 27, Ellen G. age 24, Charles H. age 20 and Thos. P. Smith age 17. The second: Henry Smith age 63, carpenter; Polly Smith age 48, Thos. Smith age 16. The first Henry was listed, with the same family members, as a carpenter in the 1850 Census for Pittsylvania Co, VA. Genealogy, Halifax County, Virginia Wills, 1792-1797, pp.71-73. He refers to Elizabeth Hill as "my loving friend", and leaves "To Thomas Hill, illegitimate son of the above mentioned Elizabeth Hill - my whole estate, both real and personal situated in the County of Pittsylvania, the whole of which is now in his possession." He also bequeaths to other of Elizabeth's children. The will was signed May 14, 1796, probate Jun 26, 1797, so it doesn't appear he actually married Elizabeth Hill. There is a rather comprehensive web site that includes William Sydnor m. Susanna Barksdale 1803-1804 which appears to be Beverly Sydnor's parents. I believe it's on Geneology.com and it's called Raine-Michaux-Sydnor geneology. Also, on the Sydnor side, there are several generations back to Fortunatus Sydnor who emigrated to Va in 1656. My family was owned by William Sydnor and inherited by Giles Sydnor, who was probably the oldest son. There is also a book written by Thompson Sydnor that can be ordered through him. Also another gentleman has also done lots of research (for the past 25 years) on the Sydnor family. Please let me know if I can provide any further help to you.

The message below was posted earlier today and is of interest to me because I have been in search of Hunting Creek Church cemetery mentioned for months. My great grandfather, Jeremiah (James) Alexander CASSIDY is said to be buried there. Later this afternoon someone responded to this query posting with Cobb as a title. The easiest way to get to it would be to enter Lt. Armistead Barksdale, or Ella Randolph Sydnor. This should get you to the file that I have entered to the site. It is fairly new. Mark, I just reread your post from January about the Chancery Court Records. I'm in MO, but it makes me want to jump in my car and head BACK to Halifax Co., yesterday!! or before next Wednesday. Hubby and I were there 10 years ago, very green to genealogy, and like you I love that place! While in that main room at court house, remember that big ladder? Stupid me, while looking around I stepped up a few rungs on it and looked at the very top row on the left side of the main room. I don't know what I looking at, but the whole top row was dated VERY early, in the 1700's. I wonder what they were? We saw some of the drawers with packets in them, that didn't look as if they had been opened in several hundred years. I wonder if the old stuff was Chancery Records? I think I'll check Utah and see what they microfilmed there. Thanks for the inspiring post. Anna
