Also, post the surnames in the message subject, or at least the most relevant/important ones. I usually skip messages with subject titles like "My surnames" or "roll call". If people have the time/info to post info about the family line(s) (names, dates, time periods, where they lived, migration, etc), that would be most helpful in seeing if there is even a chance our various family lines are related. So, are we all ready to start this? I'm game. -Mark -----Original Message----- From: Larry-Anita Avery [mailto:laavery@brinet.com] Sent: Friday, April 06, 2001 7:41 AM To: VAHALIFA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: posting your list Regarding the suggestion posted today about listing the persons or family being researched, I think it is a good idea to do it annually provided the poster provides enough information about the family to identify him/her. Hi, It has been a while since I wrote but I am still trying to find the parents of Bennett Blankenship who lived in Halifax Co. from about 1800 until 1847. He married Catherine Huddleston, Sept. 1819 in Halifax Co. She was the daughter of Stephen Huddleston a prominent land owner. Bennett and Catherine moved to White Co., TN and lived there until their death. Any help would be appreciated. Pattie

Am sending this again, because I don't think I "replied to all" as I intended. It is helpful for people to post their surnames from time to time. Having been on many other lists at various times, I find that it's unproductive to post only once a year. Some of us are very old, and may not have another year. Also, I've found that it helps keep the list active. If one removes or deletes posted surnames, that defeats the purpose for those of us who are trying to find kindred souls, etc. It is arrogant to delete sincere and honest postings no matter how little information there is in them. For example: If I post the surname BOMAR, I would expect to hear from people who had a Bomar ancestor in Halifax....no matter what year.

When it comes to genealogical lists, silence isn't is golden.... it defeats the whole purpose. I am new here, but subscribed for several years to several very active and helpful lists... they stay active by periodically posting their 'brick walls' and information about what family or families they are working on in an area. Would some members here be willing to post what families (names, dates & locations when known) you are working on so that it will be possible for those working on the same lines to connect and share the more detailed information. I posted mine yesterday. It is quite possible I have or have access to information on some of your lines - especially those in the southern USA. I live in TN near the East TN Historical Society - four floors of detailed information about east & middle TN, western NC & SC, southern KY & VA and northeast GA - some of which are not available from any other source. I am going to Wilson Co TN this weekend to take my mother and her sisters to see where their maternal grandmother's family lived and are buried. My grandmother's mother had died when she was two weeks old and no one knew exactly who she was or where she was from - it took me 25 years to find her. Some of the ROBERTSON's from Halifax Co settled in the area and married into this family including my g-g-grandfather, Charles L. ROBERTSON (~1840 VA), son of Anthony B. ROBERTSON (1813 Halifax Co VA). Renee
Greetings, I am in search of info on Afro American Youngers from the 1870 Federal Census. On pages 703A and 703B in the 1870 Federal Census in the Staunton District of Halifax County Va. there are families, headed by the persons listed below: Dwelling # 87 a white Joel Younger # 88 a black Primus Younger # 89 a black Alfred Younger # 90 a black John Younger # 91 a black Daniel Younger # 92 a black Joe Younger # 93 a black Peter Chappell # 94 a black Jack Younger # 95 a white Phillip Younger. # 96 a black Shadrack Younger I am seeking info on any of these families Thanks, Larry
Hi Halifax Co researchers, I have recently discovered that Anthony B. ROBERTSON (1813 Halifax Co. VA) is my 3rd g-grandfather. The Mormon records list his mother as Nancy ROBERTSON but cite no source. Is Anthony B. (1813 VA --- >1860 TN) among your relations. He moved to Wilson Co TN about 1844 -45 with a Lewis ROBERSON (~1792 VA -- >1850 <1860 likely TN). Both men had wives and several children. I believe Anthony B. ROBERTSON (1813 VA) was the son of Lewis ROBERTSON (~1792 VA) but the wife listed with him below is only about 7 years older than Anthony B. - too young to be Anthony's mother. I have information that a Nancy CARLTON married unknown ROBERTSON in Halifax Co in the early 1800's. Does anyone know more about this marriage? From the 18th District (Henderson Crossroad - now called Norene) in the Wilson Co TN census of 1850: Anthony B ROBERTSON - 36 VA (~1813 VA) Martha 34 VA (~1816 VA) Alexander 11 VA (~1839 VA) Charles 9 VA (~1841 VA) Mary 8 VA (~1842 VA) Rhoda 4 TN (~1846 TN) Albert 2 TN (~1848 TN) Sally (Sarah in 1860 cen) 2 TN (~1848 TN) These additional children are on the 1860 census: Nancy 8 TN (~1852 TN) Henry 6 TN (~1854 TN) Adjacent household: Lewis 58 VA (~1792 VA) missing in 1860 - likely deceased Martha 44 VA (~1806 VA) William 24 VA (~1836 VA) still living with mother in 1860 Calieb 19 VA (~1831 VA) John 16 VA (~1833 VA) still living with mother in 1860 Samuel 14 VA (~1834 VA) Mary 13 VA (~1837 VA) Nathan 8 VA (~1842 VA) still living with mother in 1860 Jane 7 VA (~1843 VA) missing in 1860 - deceased or married Nancy 4 TN (~1846 TN) called "Virginia" on 1860 census Christopher 2 TN (~1848 TN) missing in 1860 - likely deceased My connection to these families: Lewis ROBERTSON (unsure of connection, but believe Anthony is either his son or brother - families were living on adjacent farms in TN 1850 and 1860 and appear to have moved from VA to TN together about 1845) Anthony B. ROBERTSON family: Anthony's son Charles L. (~1840 VA) married Sarah Ann Byers (5/7/1850 TN - 11/30/1867 TN). The couple had twin daughters (Sarah Laura & Martha Flaura) on 11/24/1867 and Sarah Ann died a week later. Charles L. ROBERTSON is in the household in the 1870 Wilson TN census with his deceased wife's parents - Moses A. BYERS (8/8/1824 TN - 5/12/1898 TN) and Lucretia PRICHARD BYERS(12/16/1832 - >1898) - and the 2 year old twins. In 1880, the twins (now 12 years old) are still with the grandparents (last name is misspelled BOYER on census), but Charles is gone. I found a marriage of a Charles ROBERTSON to Bettie WRIGHT on 9/23/1880 in Wilson Co. TN which might explain his disappearance. The neighboring DeKalb Co TN newspaper has multiple listings during the 1870''s and 1880's about a Charlie ROBINSON teaching school at a location called Four Corners, which is on the Wilson - DeKalb line. Twin Sarah Laura ROBERTSON died 5/30/1882 without having married. The other twin, Martha Flaura ROBERTSON, married James Henry WHITE (1869 Warren Co TN - 1964 Davidson Co TN) and they had three children. Valeira (1892) Freddie (1894 - lived only 9 days) and Flaura (1896). Martha Flaura ROBERTSON WHITE died 8/23/1896, 13 days after the birth of her daughter Flaura (my maternal grandmother). Do you have a Lewis ROBERTSON or Anthony ROBERTSON in your line? I am in the process of completing work on this transplanted family and willing to share information with others researching the line. While we are on the subject of Jones folk, does anyone connect with my ancestors? My 4th great grandparents were Woodford and Mildred Jones who were married in Halifax County 20 November 1802. I don't know Woodford's birth date or place, but Mildred (Milly) was born 17 February 1784 in Virginia and her father's name was probably Joseph. They had at least four children before leaving Halifax County to begin the migration north and west circa 1817. Their children included John L. Jones b.1812 Halifax Co., Parthena Byrd Jones b. 1813 in Halifax Co., Chesley D. Jones b 1815, Bedford B. Jones b. 1816 Halifax Co., (He married Emeline Powell 1839 in Halifax Co.), James A. Jones b. 1818 in Kentucky (probably Hopkins Co.) & Woodford G. Jones b. 1820 in Kentucky. The family had moved on to St. Clair & Washington Counties in Illinois by 1833 and some lived later in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas & Texas. Judy in Iowa

VA. Four siblings, Christopher, Mary, Betty, and Elias White are mentioned in the will (1783) of John Lucos of Mecklenberg Co. VA. I have never been able to find the parents of these White children. Christopher White married Martha Church in 1789 in Halifax Co. Elias White married Nancy Flynn in 1790 in Halifax Co. Christopher had a son John who would have been the right age to marry the above mentioned Nancy Jones. Do you have any further information on this WHITE family?
