    3. Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2116 Surname: MCDOWELL, BROWN ------------------------- I've just discovered that my GGGG grandfather John McDowell married Mary "Polly" Brown in Halifax County on 9 February 1792. My GGG grandfather William Allen McDowell was probably born at the end of that year in Halifax County. Other known children born to John and Mary were Nancy, John, Mary, Swepson, James, Margaret, and Susan. The family moved to the area of Hardin/Hart/LaRue counties in Kentucky during the early 1800s (as best as I can estimate). Does anyone have information on John McDowell or Mary Brown's families? This line has been a brick wall. Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I'll gladly exchange what I have on their descendants.

    1. [VAHALIFA] Last minute plea for help
    2. Dear listfriends, My daughter has a couple of days off from work, so we made a last minute decision to drive from Richmond tomorrow morning (Thursday) and spend some time looking for ancestral homesites in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. My wife decided to go along if we would stop at some antique stores. <grin> This trip is probably the ultimate in not having carefully thought-out plans before starting out. Oh, well, nothing like a little "spirited" adventure. But, I would certainly appreciate a little help and advice. Thursday we will drive to Halifax and Danville and spend two or three hours at each location. Does anyone know if the Halifax court house is open and what time they close? And, will the Danville Public Library be open tomorrow and be staffed with the genealogy society volunteers? I visited the library last year and those folks were fantastic. Haven't been to the Halifax court house in years. Anything I need to know before I get there? I know that my James Hodges had land on "both forks of Bradley Creek" and have information locating his land in the general area. It's in the northeast part of Halifax Co. Is anyone familier enough with the area to know whether there are roads near when the two forks come together? Or, where I might go to find out? Perhaps, the highway dept.? On Friday we will go to Chatham and spend a couple of hours in the Pittsylvania Co. court house. Can anyone tell me the hours? And, is there anything I need to know in advance? In fact we may spend the night in Chatham. Any recommended motels? James Hodges' son, Jesse, was born in Halifax Co. in 1754 but moved to Pittsylvania Co. where he married Elizabeth Collins in 1775. We know that in 1798 he deeded his land to Drewry Scrugs. The 454 acres of land was located "on both sides of Camp Branch" in Pittsylvania Co. I have not been able to locate Camp Branch? Can anyone help me with that? I have checked my USGS site but it did not have a Camp Branch. So now, I'm at you mercy and hope you are merciful. <grin> Even a smidgen of help would be appreciated. Happy Hunting! Jim Hodges Richmond, VA ps. I apologize to all of you who are on both the Pittsylvania and Halifax Co lists for having to face this twice. Also, my version of AOL doesn't have spell check!!!

    1. [VAHALIFA] PLEASE HELP
    2. I am new to this list and needs some real help. Until yesterday I was wondering if my great grandmother was an alien from Mars or some unknown galaxy. Seriously I knew she was but from documentation I have received she was born in four different states and in three decades. New found information had my great grandmother ELLEN F. FORD being born May 1856 in Virginia. Now that I know she didn't just pop into this world or come on a flying saucer I am looking for information on her family, parents, and siblings. If you have Ford info please check for her. Also I need a CENSUS look up for 1860 and 1870. She married in April 1872 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Any help is greatly appreciated. If you look for her in census records you have access to please let me know where you looked so I will know at least where she is not at in Virginia. Thanks you for you help. Patricia

Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2113 Surname: Farmer, Carr, Glass, Martin, Priddy ------------------------- Ann, I am researching the genealogy of Barnard Farmer who lived in Halifax Co., VA. Barnard (born circa 1765) married Mary (Molly/Polly) Carr, daughter of John Carr, in 1787 in Halifax Co. They had three children: Elizabeth (Farmer) Scurlock, Mary (Farmer) Reeves, and John F. Farmer (born 1799). John F. married Elizabeth Martin in 1823 in Halifax Co. There are definite connections with this family and the Glass & Priddy families. I believe that a Frederick Farmer from Halifax is Barnard's father. Barnard moved to Stokes Co., NC around 1826. John F. moved to Weakley Co., TN around 1838. I was intrigued with your surname list because it included many of the surnames that is intertwined in my family. Please pass on any information that you have. My e-mail is grfarmerjr@aol.com.
