The first task is to trace and document the ancestry of John F. and his father Barnard Farmer. The second task is to specifically determine and document the relationship between Barnard (alias Barnett, Barnet, Bernard) Farmer; Frederick Farmer, Sr.; Frederick Farmer, Jr. and at least one other Frederick Farmer circa the late 1700s and early 1800s in-or-around Halifax County, Virginia and Stokes County, North Carolina. Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2130 Surname: Puckett ------------------------- I am searching Halifax for the parents and/or siblings of Shippey Allen Puckett, born, Halifax, 1811, migrated to Granville County, NC, died, 1888 and buried in NC. He married Susan E. Moorefield, born in Halifax, died in 1888, and also buried in Granville County, NC. I am at a dead end. I think there are several possibilities, neither of which I can prove. His father could be either Stephen or Thomas Puckett, who were sons of Stephen Puckett and his wife Elizabeth, whose will was dated 30 Nov 1810, Halifax, VA. Any help would be appreciated.

H. 9 James 6 Mary Ann 2 Drusilla 85 The family was not listed in the 1870 Forsyth Co. census but I believe they were probably in a nearby county. I have a letter written by Ledford's sister, Elizabeth Bowen, in 1889 where she says brother Ledford has died. At this time Eliz. was getting her mail at Rural Hall, Forsyth Co. NC. Mary Ann, Ledford's daughter, married James H. Moore and they were living in Pilot Mt., Surry Co. NC. Would like to hear from anyone knowing of this family or if anyone can find them in cemetery books. Bill Reynolds Springfield, MO.

Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2129 Surname: Asher, Glass ------------------------- Bob, I read your October note to Ann on the Halifax Forum with interest, as I am also researching the same area and time for the Asher family. I have documented my lineage to John Asher m. Jain who lived in adjacent Campbell Co. in the late 1700s. The Tanners, Ashers and Glasses were of the landed gentry at that time and place. I believe that John might be from the Halifax Ashers who settled in the area in the early 1700s, but I have not been able to validated it. John had a son James who married Frances Glass in 1813. Their son John Glass Asher m. Susan Ann Epperson also moved to the Weakly Co., TN area [Henry Co.] in 1856. It occurs to me that the Glass connection and the fact that they moved to the same area might suggest a connection in the lineages, or research that you and Ann are doing. You can find my data on the Ashers at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com. Just insert John Wilson as the given name. Phil

    3. Hi, Larry! I have been hoping for some time to run across a descendant of a Younger slave. I am not a descendant of Joel, but I am a descendant of Thomas, William, and Williamson, who were related to Joel in Halifax county. I believe that Joel was the son (?) of John, who was a brother to one of my g grandparents. It's early in the morning and I haven't my records in front of me. I have much information to share with you regarding all the slaves of my ancestors and particularly my gg grandfather, Williamson Younger's comments about slavery that he wrote in his diary. If you'd like to e-mail me privately, please do so. BMacKie1@compuserve.com Sincerely and looking forward to hearing from you! Brownie MacKie

    1. [VAHALIFA] LACY, Mary & Armistead--Halifax Co. Va. 1870>1910
    2. Greetings, I am in search of info on a black Armistead Lacy, wife Mary McGraw and their children. Mary was a slave to John Armistead McCraw, who in 1860 had 30 slaves. In the 1870 Census I did not find any of my black Lacys. In the 1880 Census, Halifax Co. Va. I found Mary 47y living with children Armistead 17y, Bettie 15y, and grandson Edward Lacy 3y. Missing were Mary's husband Armistead, and Albert abt 15Y (who died in 1888). Mary's daughter Lucy (my G-Mother) is living in a house where her future husband Thomas Chandler, was boarding. Marys son Patrick is a servant in still another house. In the 1900 Census Halifax Co., Va, there was Armistead 84y, Mary 70y, grandson Stanhope 14y, grandson Elijah 3y, and granddaughter Nora Yancy 17y. These three grandchildren were the children of Annie (Bettie), who was 15y in the 1880 census. In 1910 Armistead (would be 94y) and his wife Mary (would be 80y) are missing from the census. Any connection out there? Larry

    1. [VAHALIFA] CHAPPELL - Peter & Allie/Alice Halifax Co. Va. -1835-1900
    2. Greetings, My great-grandparents were Peter and Allie/Alice Chappell of Halifax Co. VA. Allie/Alice was a slave. I am not sure if Peter was also a slave. Christopher Carlton a white slave owner died in 1824 (probably in King + Queen County) Va. In his will Christopher willed to his daughter Polly Carlton "one Negro Esther and her future increase." A provision in the will was that if Polly died without issue, the slave Esther and any of her increase willed to Polly by her father was to go to Pollys siblings, and the issue of Pollys dead siblings. Polly died July 7, 1858, without issue. In Jan of 1859 the increase of "one Negro Esther," listed as my g-grand mother Allie and her children Willis, Daniel (my grandfather ), Eppa, George, and Henry, were bought by Joel Younger for the sum of $1,500. This sum was paid to the surviving siblings of Polly Carlton, and to the reps. of her dead siblings. =========================================================== Joel Younger had in fact had possession of Allie before he bought her in 1859, because I found in Slave Birth Records, Allie giving birth to three of her children, in 1853, 1855, and 1858, and the owner was listed as Joel Younger. In the 1870 Census for Halifax Co, VA, Peter aged 40y and Allie aged 35 were found with the following children: Willis 20y. George, 15y, Henry 13y, Peter 12y, Doctor 10y, Davis 9y, Bell 7y, Willy Ann 5y, Edward 3y, and Horace 6mo. In 1870 Daniel, (son of Peter & Allie) who was my grandfather, had married under the surname Younger, and was living with his wife Sue. When Sue married Daniel Oct 2, 1869, she listed her surname as Stovall. The parents of Sue were Primus and Mariah Younger. I suspect that Sue had been sold to slave owner J. B. Stovall, in the home of whom Daniel and Sue were married. In 1880 I again find Peter 50y, and Allie/Alice 50 y, with children Bell 18y, Willie 16, Doctor 20, Lee (Peter) 22y, Henry 23y, Eppy 24y, Edward 12y, Horace (Braxton) 11y, Milly 7y, and Corer 4y. Daniel my Grandfather and Sue his wife were living elsewhere. Other than the sale of Allie & children to Joel Younger & the births of children to Allie in 1853, 1855 and 1858, I found no other records whatsoever of Peter or Allie before 1859, or after 1887. In 1887 Peter was listed as the informant when Edward Chappell, one of his sons died of Consumption (TB). Allie was last seen in the 1880 census The oldest child of Allie/Alice Chappell was Willis, born about 1850. All the children of Allie named Allie and Peter as their parents, which means Peter was somewhere near Allie beginning as early as early as 1850. I don't know where Peter, the hubby of Allie came from considering the Chappell surname Peter and Allie were using in the 1870 census. Any help out there? Larry
