Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2150 Surname: Carter ------------------------- Thank you for your information. In your research have you seen anything on a Lemuel, Sidney, Thomas, Aliczander, Lafayette Carter? They were brothers of William Francis Carter (a son of Richard). Or have you seen anything on A Tom Tarpley, an Ann Tarpley who married a John Cheek or a L.B. Tarpley? They are brothers/sisters of Sarah Mildred Tarpley. The Richard Carter line we have been told are the ones related to the Carters, Brandons, Harrisons, and the Randolphs. I have a letter refering to Lighthorse Harry Lee who married Annie Carter, a decedent of King Carter, and she was the mother of General Robert Edward Lee. Also a William Byrd who married Bettie Carter, my GGGGgrandfather's great aunt. My GGGgrandfather (William Francis Carter) was a cousin of Robert E. Lee. Hopefully, you may have come across some info on the above. Thanks again for your reply and information.
Hello listers, New to your list today and I have a question for some of you. According to an index I have a Joseph Street left a will in Halifax Co. Va. in 1782. My question is, does anyone in the county do lookups for people? I would be willing to pay someone to make a copy of this named will for me. Please, can someone help? Vickie
Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2149 Surname: Carter, Scruggs, Waddell, Watkins, Turner, Boyd, Bates, Hobson ------------------------- I wish I knew what to tell you. I have a proven line to this CARTER family...my Mary CARTER who married John SCRUGGS was the daughter of Theodorick Sr. and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and sister to Theodorick Jr. who died in Prince Edward County, VA and whose will you quote. Just wish my other CARTERs were so easy! Just to complicate things even further, John's son Richard was apparently pretty nearly grown when his father died and he started to appear in the records soon thereafter making a total of three Richards in Halifax until my Richard died in 1786. It appears that Richard, son of John, died in 1799 intestate. He left sons Richard Jr., Samuel and William. Other researchers say there was another son, John, but I am not certain of that one. As you probably know, John's birth is recorded in St. Peters Parish, New Kent County, as having occured on 26 Aug 1736. He is pretty much accepted as the eldest son of Theodorick, Jr and Ann WADDELL. Have you seen John's entire will? Just in case you don't have it, it reads (skipping some of the obligatory language at the beginning): Signed 18 June 1781, entered into probate 20 Sept 1781./ ..being indisposed in body but of perfect mind & memory... I lend my beloved wife, MARY CARTER, during her widowhood for her use & the bringing up and educating of my children the land & plantation whereon I now live & the following slaves - Jack, Charles, James, Baker, Tamor; stock of all kinds, household furniture & c... To my daughter, Ann WADDELL twenty five shillings. To my daughter ELIZABETH CARTER on negro boy Sam & feather bed and furniture to her heirs and assigns forever. To my daughter MARY CARTER one negro boy Crafford & feather bed & do. To my daughter JUDITH CARTER one one negro girl Hannah & feather bed & do. To my daughter SALLEY CARTER seventy five pounds specia in gold or silver & feather bed & furniture & do. To my three eldest sons RICHARD, THEODORICK & ROBERT CARTER my creek land I purchased of GEORGE RIDLEY containing 450 acres to be equally divided between them also a good feather bed & furniture apiece & if either of them die before they come of age the survivors to inherit the land by equal division to them & their heirs forever. To my son JAMES CARTER the land whereon I now live & a good feather bed & furniture & do. To my son FRANCIS CARTER 290 acres lying out on the road adjoining the land of W. HOBSON & a good feather bed & furniture & do. If either of my two youngest sons FRANCIS & JOHN die before age 21 years the survivor to heir the dec'd brother's share of the land. If either of my daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Judith or Salley CARTER should die before they come of age or marry their legacy should be equally divided among the survivors. At the coming of age of my youngest son the above mentioned slaves, Jack, Charles, James, Baker, Tamor with future increase & all the rest & remainder of my personal estate should be equally divided among my beloved wife & children, my daughter ANN WADDILL excepted. Exec: wife MARY CARTER, also Capt. James TURNER, Mr. William BOYD & my beloved brothers RICHARD & THEO. CARTER. S/ JOHN CARTER Wit: BENJA. HOBSON, DAVID BATES, CHAS. CARTER, NOEL WADDILL, THEO CARTER. MARY CARTER and RICHARD CARTER presented the will to the Court. Their sureties for the execution of the will were NOEL WADDELL and WILLIAM WATKINS. John's daughter, Elizabeth, married Noel WADDELL Jr. after her father's death. William WATKINS was also a WADDELL in-law. My Richard's sons were Presley, Levin, Charles Ewell, Spencer, Thompson and Thornton. Birth order is "best guess" from marriage records and other "guesstimates". I realize that none of this helps identify your Richard but I thought it might help with the process of elimination.

Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2144 Surname: Carter ------------------------- I believe the Richard Carter who married Catherine Brandon is the son of Theodorick Carter who is the son of John Carter based on a will dated June 18, 1781. This Richard Carter married a Catherine Brandon on 22 July 1822 in Halifax Co, Virginia. They lived on the Dan River. I am the GGGGgranddauther of Richard & Catherine. My line is from their son William Francis Carter who married Sara Mildred Tarpley, they had 10 children of whom I decend from John Henry Carter who married (1) Molly Tyson and (2) Sallie Tyson (cousins). John Henry and Molly had one son Ewell Elmo Carter who married Anne Kolb and they had one son Wayne Evans Carter (my grandfather). I to am trying to prove also that Theodorick is his, (Richard's) father. However, from two different wills who both mention a Theodorick and a Richard. >From Theodorick Carter's will dated 7 Dec 1777 he mentions a daughter Susannah Stubblefield and sons John, Theodorick, William, & Richard. He also mentions a daughter Nancy Waddill and another son Waddill Carter. He also mentions two more daughter's Molly and Sally and yet another son Samuel. This Theodorick owned a farm near Francis Brandon in Mar of 1775. This will was witnessed by Waddill Carter, Nathanial Venable, Francis Watkins, Elizabeth Clarke, Agness Watkins, and William Waddill. In John Carter's will of Halifax County dated June 18, 1781 who mentions his wife as Mary Carter and daughters Ann Waddill, Elizabeth Carter, Mary Carter, Sally Carter; sons, Richard, Theodorick, Robert, James, Francis and brothers Richard and Theo Carter. The will was witnessed by Benjamin Hobson, David Bates, Charles Carter, Noel Waddill, Theo Carter. John's property was north of the Dan River in the Oak Level area of Halifax County. It is not adjacent to the Brandon properties like Theodorick Carter's property but is adjacent to the Lawsons and Kirbys who married Brandons. I'm not sure if the above will help determine which goes to which but any help would be appreciated.

> Scurlock/Sampson/Tunes/Clark Francis Marion Sampson of Halifax Co., VA migrated to Smith Co., TN, "next door" to Wilson Co., TN. He had a son, Jesse Sampson who married Betsy Tune in Halifax Co., VA, Dec 30, 1795. Jesse also migrated to Smith Co., Tn. He later died in New Orleans Jan. 8, 1815. Who were Betsy's parents? Patsy Scurlock of NC was born abt. 1790-1793. She migrated into Smith Co., TN with her two ilegitimate daughters, Eliza Ann and Martha. She arrived before 1820 since she was enumerated in the 1820 Smith Co.Census. Patsy married her near neighbor William "Billy" Sampson" son of Stephen A. Sampson, brother of Jesse Sampson and grandson of Francis Marion Sampson. Her daughter Eliza married Thomas Anderson Clark and Martha married James Monroe Wilkerson, all of Smith Co., TN. However Thomas Anderson Clarks parents, Leonard Clark and Ann Snoddy Clark migrated about 1818/1819 to Smith Co., TN from Pittsylvania Co., Va. Ann Snoddy Clark's mother was Elizabeth Sampson, brother of Francis Marion Sampson. I feel that Patsy Scurlock migrated into Smith Co. with some member of the family. She first appears as a single woman with two children (girls) living next door to The Stephen Sampson Family on Bluff Creek, Smith Co., TN on the 1820 Census. The only information I have on her is that she was born in NC. Pittsylvania Co. and Halifax Co., Va are on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Is she somehow related to Dudley Scurlock? Is Betsy Tune related to your Tunes and finally is your Dudley Scurlock related to Miel Miles Scurlock of Chatham Co., NC? > > Surname: Scurlock, Tune, Byrd > ------------------------- > > I am interested in the Scurlock name you have listed. Posted on: HALIFAX CO, VA QUERY FORUM Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Halifax/2135 Surname: Scurlock, Milner, Tune ------------------------- It is believed the wife of Mark Milner was Sarah Tune who was a dau. of Thomas Tune, Richmond Co., VA, and mentioned in his will as Sarah Milner. Travers Tune, Halifax Co., was also mentioned in the will as a son. In some instances Travers was written as Travis. Dudley Scurlock married Dec. 21, 1801, Sally Tune, dau. of Travers. Dudley was in Wilson Co., TN, the same time as Travis Milner, son of Mark and Sarah. It is not documented what happened to Travis Milner, but Dudley Scurlock died in Wilson Co. Since Leonard Milner of Florida opened the door that Sarah was a Tune, then it is our belief that wife of Mark was the Sarah Milner who was mentioned in the will and that she and Travers were brother and sister. Therefore, she named her last son Travis after her brother and Travers named his daughter after his sister, Sarah. This being the one who married Dudley Scurlock. Could this be right?

Co., VA] 100a on Rockey Cr. br of Golden Grove. Frederick's mark "F" & Sally's mark "//". He was in Greenville Co. for the 1790 & 1800 census. He also sold land in 1804 to Tucker Woodson [from Pitts.
