    1. Daniel South (1781 PA) to Daniel South (1820 VA)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: South, Moore, Lawson, Estep Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/jAC.2ACE/628 Message Board Post: I need help in connecting these two Daniel Souths. I downloaded Daniel from Ancestry but some of the data appears to be incorrect. One of the facts for Daniel South born about 1781 in PA is that he is listed in the 1850 census for Surry County, NC. I have searched the census and found no Souths in Surry County NC for 1850. Going by the info I received, the following PA Censuses may be relevant. __________________________________________________________________________________ 1790 Census of Washington, Alleghany County, PA. I do not know which Daniel fits the best. One could be the father of the other. I don't suspect them to be brothers. That two brothers are named Daniel is not the norm. Males: (4) Under 16 , (1) 16 & c. {Daniel} Females: (6) Free White Females 1790 Census of Bedford County, PA. Males: (1) Under 16, (1) 16 & c. {Daniel} Females: (2) Free White Females If one of these two are the correct Daniel then the birth year I was given, 1781, cannot be true since both were born before 1774. More than likely the Daniel I am looking for is a son of one of these two. I was given Edmund as the father of Daniel but he is not listed when I search Ancestry for him in 1790. The search in 1790 does not list any of the brothers and sisters I was given for Daniel. The search list is as follows: Benjamen South, Washington, MD William South, Washington, MD Andrew South, Bertie, NC Benjamin South, Caswell, NC Daniel South, Washington, Allegheny, PA Daniel South, Bedford, PA Thomas South, Bucks, PA Joseph South, Laurens, SC William South, Laurens, SC __________________________________________________________________________________ 1800 Census of Fayette, Alleghany County, PA, I do not know which Daniel fits the best. One could easily be the father of the other. Males: (1) Under 10 , (2) 16-25, (1) 45 & c. {Daniel born before 1755} Females: (3) Under 10, (1) 10-15, (1) 45 & c. {Wife born before 1755} Males: (2) Under 10, (1) 10-15, (1) 16-25 {Daniel born 1775-1784} Females: (2) Under 10, (1) 26-44. {Wife born 1756-1774} This one is Mary South, Providence and Colerain, Bedford Co., PA Males: (1) 16-25 {Son born 1775-1784} [The age fits if this is Daniel] Females: (1) 45 & c. {Mary born before 1765} I believe that the Daniel listed above in Alleghany Co., PA, born 1775-1784, is the son of the other Daniel and that he is listed in his father's household in 1790 for Alleghany Co., PA. I believe that the Daniel listed in 1790 Bedford Co., PA, is the husband of the Mary South listed above in the 1800 Bedford Co., PA, and that he died before 1800 making Mary a widow. The Daniel I am looking for may be a son of this Mary South. __________________________________________________________________________________ 1810 Census of Fayette, Alleghany County, PA. I do not know which is the correct Daniel or if either is correct. Still yet, one could be the father of the other. Neither fits the birth year I was given for Daniel. Males: (3) Under 10 {Jesse and two Unknowns} , (2) 10-15 {Unknown Males}, (1) 26-44 {Daniel 1766-1784} [This Daniel fits the year of birth I was given] Females: (1) Under 10 {Unknown Female}, (1) 45 & c. {Wife born before 1765} Males: (1) Under 10 {Jesse}, (1) 16-25 {Unknown Male}, (1) 45 & c. {Daniel born befoe 1765} Females: (2) 10-15 {Unknown Females}, (1) 45 & c. {Wife born before 1765} Benjamin South lives nearby. This one is probably the Mary South listed above in 1800. Providence, Bedford Co., PA, Mrs. South. Males: (3) 10-15, (1) 16-25, (1) 26-44 {Son born 1766-1784} Females: (1) Under 10, (1) 45 & c. {Mrs. South} The one son fits for Daniel. __________________________________________________________________________________ 1820 Census of Fayette, Alleghany County, PA. Males: (3) 16-26 {Jesse, Samuel & Daniel}, (1) 45 & c. {Daniel born before 1775} Females: (1) 16-26 {Unknown Female}, (1) 45 & c. {Mary born before 1775} Benjamin South lives nearby. I found no other possibilities listed in the 1820 census. This Daniel throughout the preceeding censuses does not seem to fit the Daniel I was given. __________________________________________________________________________________ I have found no Daniel South listed in the 1830 search that fits any of the above. There is one Daniel listed for Canonsburg, Washington Co., PA. He is listed as born 1800-1810. There is a Mrs. South living alone in Philadelphia, PA. She was born 1770-1780. The only one that fits the family is a Jesse South in Grayson Co., VA. He was born 1800-1810 which fits the 1805 I was given. The other Souths in Grayson County do not fit the family I was given. The others listed are Ahsa (female 1790-1800), David (1780-1791), Hannah (1760-1770), John (1790-1800), and Joseph (1770-1780). The South names I am looking for in 1830 and not found are: Samuel (1817), Daniel (1781), Daniel (1820), Sarah (1820), Stephen (1823), Gideon (1828), and James (1830). __________________________________________________________________________________ The Daniel I am searching for is listed as follows: 1840 Census Surry County, NC, page 71 Daniel South Males: (1) under 5 [George age 2], (1) 20-30 [Daniel] Females: (1) under 5 [Catherine age 1 or less], (1) 20-30 [Ann] Daniel is living next door to David South. David may be Daniel's father or brother. There is (1) male 50-60 and (1) female 50-60. There is a female age 20-30 that may be Sarah South age 20 the mother of Rhoda. There is a female 5-10 that may be Rhoda age 5. There is a male 20-30 that may be the husband of Sarah. There is a George Lawson and an Edward Lawson living nearby. George is the father of David lawson who married Sarah South. ______________________________________________________________________ 1850 Census Smyth County VA, 15 Aug 1850, Page 189.
