The Virginian-Pilot; :Feb 2, 2007; :Hampton Roads; :20 Virgie Gertrude Gibbs HOPEWELL - Virgie Gertrude Gibbs, 89, a native of Dublin, Va., died Jan. 18, 2007, at John Randolph Medical Center. She was the daughter of Valentine Meredith and Larmie Trail Dickerson and the widow of James Fletcher Gibbs. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James M. Powers Sr. and a daughter, Patricia Ann Powers. Mrs. Gibbs was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Hopewell and retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. She is survived by her children, James M. Powers Jr. and wife Julie of Woodstock, Ga., Sarah P. Willman and husband George III of Suffolk, George M. Powers and wife Annette of Chester; stepchildren, Lewis and Jean Gibbs, Donnie and Lois Gibbs, Sandra and Arthur Green and Mary Ann Gibbs; six grandchildren, Stephanie P. Garrett and husband Kevin of Chester, Dr. James E. Powers and wife Susan of Blacksburg, Va., Dr. Kimberly P. Crisp and husband Matt of Marietta, Ga., George William Willman IV of Suffolk, Dr. Diana E. Willman of Virginia Beach and James Andrew Willman of Suffolk; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Bertha D. Phibbs of Bridgewater, Va.; cousins, Ruth Childress and Elsie Kelly, both of Pulaski, Va.; numerous stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A funeral was held at noon Monday, Jan. 22, at the Church of the Brethren, 4415 Monroe Ave., Hopewell, VA 23860. The Rev. Earl Stovall officiated. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Va. Arrangements were handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
