The Virginian-Pilot; :Feb 4, 2007; :Hampton Roads; :27 Jessie S. Radford VIRGINIA BEACH - Jessie Beatrice Sluder Radford of Windermere Nursing Care in Virginia Beach quietly joined the angels and her Maker Saturday morning, Feb. 3, 2007. A native of Asheville, N.C., she was born Aug. 31, 1915, to Grace Lee and Adolphus Franklin Sluder. Losing both her parents by the time she was six, she was raised by her maternal grandparents, Mark and Mary Hayes Sluder, until their deaths and later by her paternal grandmother, Margaret Elizabeth Netherton Sluder. In addition to her parents and grandparents, she was predeceased by her lifelong love, retired Lt. Cmdr. John Lewis Radford and her granddaughter, Julie Radford Ennis. After graduating from West Buncombe High School and working briefly at ENKA, Jessie began a 56-year partnership with John. She was with him during the attack on Pearl Harbor and remained his constant companion whenever possible after World War II and during his 27-year naval career. Jessie later partnered with John in their real estate adventures and their many travels. She was remarkably adaptive as a homemaker and quickly established a homelike atmosphere whether in a hotel, rented property or newly purchased house. She used these talents to serve as a Welcome Wagon Hostess and gracefully entertain her many friends. Jessie was a charter member of the Retired Officers Wives Club and the Tidewater Chapter of the Wylie Bynun Airstream Club. She was also a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Retired Submarine Veterans Association, Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel and widows' group and numerous bridge clubs. Jessie will be held close in memory by her two daughters of Virginia Beach, Susie Louise Rice and husband Romaine and Betty Carol Ennis and husband Frank. She is also survived by her only sister, Nina Lee Sluder Justice of Asheville, N.C. Her ever adored grandchildren include Theresa A. McGallicher and husband Jeff of Niamey, Niger, Wendy Dingus and husband Denny of Bel Alton, Md., Dona M. Ainsley and husband Jeff McCullers of Fort Myers, Fla., and John and Eric Ennis of Virginia Beach. Also cherishing her memory are her great-grandchildren, Katie Heiser, Trey and Emily Dingus, Ainsley and John McCullers, Kelsey Ennis, Bryce Detterman and Jake, Charlotte and Bridgitte McGallicher. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Baylake Retirement Center, Windermere Nursing Care, Heartland Home Health Care and Hospice and Jean Carson for their kind and considerate participation in her care these past five years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 875 North Randolph St., Suite 225, Arlington, VA 22203-1977. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, with Dr. Robert Pipkin officiating.
