He married MARY BURWELL 1768 in Franklin Co., VA. She was born 1744 in Jamestown, Gloucester Co., VA, and died September 01, 1809 in Elk Creek, Grayson Co., VA. Notes for LEWIS HALE: "Soon after his marriage, he moved from what is now Franklin Co, VA, to the upper part of the New River Valley, and settled on Elk Creek, VA. He had a brother-in-law named John Walden. When Grayson Co was formed in 1792, Lewis Hale was one of the first Magistrates of the court. Lewis Hale is said to have been a Revolutionary War soldier. Lewis Hale's 6th son, Stephen, married Frances Bourne, daughter of William (b Aug 23, 1743) and Rosamond Jones (b Feb 14, 1750) Bourne. Ref: Nuckolls book. And here's more -------------------------------------The will of Francis Haile, written 1775 Bedford Co, VA, recorded 1780, names wife Adara; sons Richard, Stephen, Lewis; daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Ruth, Ushley, Mourning; witnesses were Jonathan Pratt, George Bowles, Barnabas Arthur. Lewis Haile of Bedford Co, VA, in 1773, bought 130 acres of land in Pittsylvania Co from Nathaniel Christain and Jean, his wife. In 1778, Lewis Hale and wife Mary sold Pittsylvania Co land. In 1779, Lewis and Mary Haill of Patrick County, VA, sold 200 acres in Patrick and Henry Counties to Robert Cowan of Bedford County, VA. Ref: Patrick County Deed Book 1 page 293." >From article on the Hale Family History on p. 221-222 of "Bicentennial Heritage of Grayson Co., VA.": "Lewis Hale, Revolutionary soldier, fought in the battle of King's Mountain, under Col. William Campbell of Abingdon, VA (Sourse: "Over the Mountain Men" by Pat Alderman). Lewis Hale and wife Mary settled on Elk Creek (then Montgomery County) VA. He was named a Justice of Montgomery County, 1778-1790 (Kegley 107). He showed a great interest in civic and religious activities and founded the first Hale Meeting House in the County, which became the earliest Methodist Church in the area. Lewis and Mary Hale raised 6 sons and 2 daughters who eventually settled near them. Elk Creek became known as the Hale Settlement. Lewis and Mary are buried on their home ground, near the spacious brick house which was built by a grandson, Eli Cook Hale (1834-1905). The home is now owned by Ernest Warren and Nancy Moxley Stone." >From "Grayson Co.: A History in Words and Pictures": "Another early Grayson settler was Lewis Hale. Hale was en route to Kentucky where he hoped to find a suitable place for settlement, but the news of the death of his brother-in-law, John Walden, who had gone ahead of the Hale family and who was killed and robbed by a party of Indians at what is now Walden's Ridge, Tennessee, discouraged Lewis Hale in carrying out his plans. As a result, he decided on Elk Creek as the site of his future home. Here he lived until his death in July, 1802. He is honored for many services rendered home and country. Lewis Hale established the first church to be built in Grayson County. This church was known as the Hale Meeting House. During the Revolution, he served as a member of Crockett's command. When the county was formed in 1793 he was appointed one of the magistrates of the court. Today, a monument erected one hundred years after his death by kinsmen and enthusiastic admirers marks his grave."
