" I remember seeing a crowd trying to lynch a Grayson County slave. His name was Ike, and he had killed Isabel Mitchell right near New River. Granny Phipps' slave Charles, was arrested also for having something to do with this murder, but he was not punished. Granny Phipps was a member of the Baptist Church and she prayed for the black murderer. Andy Fields was sheriff and prevented the lynching." Memoir of Mary Killen Hollified of Wise County VA, 1920's era..... List, The above is from memoirs of a person born in what is now Alleghany County. My interest is trying to prove that these are true statements, and if the Isabell Mitchell mentioned is the same Isabell Mitchell who is buried in the Old Elk Creek Cemetery, aka Old Lebanon Cemetery, in Grayson Co VA with her husband William Mitchell. In the 1850 Ashe County NC census, William Mitchell has a young wife named Isabell, and she does not appear in later census records. Also trying to verify that Andy Fields was Sheriff in one of the counties in the late 1850's era..... Thanks for any help, Carolyn Spence
