    3. Hi! Looking for information on any Freeman or Mooney families who may have been in Grayson County between 1760 and 1820. I know that Grayson was formed from other counties, but I am not sure when. Where else should I look? Donna M. Wolf

    3. Donna, Grayson was formed in 1793 from Wythe County. Wythe was formed from Montgomery (the Carroll county USgenweb page says in 1777, but the Wythe Co. USgenweb page says in 1790. I don't know which is correct.) Carroll was formed from Grayson in 1842. Generally, it's a good idea to check all of these counties when searching this time span. 2. Hi Donna, Have you looked at the McKenzie Cemetery on line listing for Grayson Co.? There are some Mooney's in there. I just found a Mooney the other day that branches off from my line. 3. Donna-- There are also some Mooneys in the James Anderson Cem (now in the city of Galax). See the listing on NRN under Grayson Co--Cemeteries--Galax. You asked earlier about the formation of the counties and received at least a partial answer. To expand on that Carroll - formed in 1842, primarily from Grayson (rest from Patrick) Grayson - formed in 1793 from Wythe Wythe - formed in 1790 from Montgomery Montgomery - formed in 1777 from Fincastle Fincastle - formed in 1775 from Botetourt ...and before that the area of Grayson was Indian territory although nominally it was part of counties with county seats far to the east. Fincastle only existed for a couple of years and its records, such as they are, reside in Montgomery. Formation dates are approximate because it took a couple of years to organize a new county and get it going. You can find the "genealogy" of any county in the country in "The Handy Book For Genealogists" which is a standard reference available in any library which has any claim at all to a genealogy section. You might want to photocopy the section pertaining to a state when you start working in it. The maps showing the counties within the state are a very good aid to have at hand. --Ginger [email protected] wrote: >Hi Donna, >Have you looked at the McKenzie Cemetery on line listing for Grayson >Co.?
