    3. Hello, I'm new to the list. I'm researching the family of John Calvin Howell, born 1818, Old Town, Grayson Co. Va, married Louisa McMillan. (Louisa May have been a Phipps, some say Laurance). John Calvin was the son of Andrew and Jane (?) Howell, who was heir of and probably son of William Howell Sr. John Calvin moved to Ashe Co., served in the Confederacy from there, and then moved to Prairie City Oregon after Louisa died, around 1875. Sort of an aside, I noticed in the two books on Grayson Co. that I have, only George Howell is listed in the index. Other do show up in lists within the book, which evidently are not indexed. It seems strange to me that only one Howell is listed when there were obviously many there. However, it occurred to me that maybe the name has been confused with Hale, which is a soundex equivalent. There are many Hales listed, and the family lines are well researched. To support this possibility is this, a Calvin Howell (not my direct line), married a Barbary Rhudy in 1807, daughter of Jacob Rhudy. Jacob Rhudy and William Hale (possibly Howell?) had adjoining farms. Was Calvin the son of William Hale (Howell?)? I also noticed that many of the heirs of William Howell Sr. could not sign their names to one of the deeds I copied. That makes it even more likely that they did not know the "correct" spelling of the family name. Any and all help greatly appreciated, andy graham

    3. Andy, There is a chart in the 1870 Annotated Grayson Co. census that lists everyone who was a head of household in Grayson Co. from 1771 to 1850 and in what records their names are found. These Howells are listed: Alexander, b. 1794-9 1820 & 1830 census Anderson, b. 1775-94 1820 census Andrew, b. 1790-9 1830 & 1840W census Calvin, b. <1789 1810 tax list Calvin, b. 1810-9 1840 W census Ellen, b. 1790-9 1840W census George, b. 1800-9 1830 & 1840W census George, b. 1750-9 1800 census, 1810 tax list, 1820 & 1830 census James, b. <1779 1800 census, 1810 tax list John, b. <1789 1810 tax list Samuel Jr., b. [blank] 1787 & 1793 Samuel Sr., b. [blank] 1787 & 1793 William, b. [blank] 1787 William, b. 1810-9 1840W census William Jr., b. <1779 1800 census, 1810 tax list William Sr., b. <1779 1800 census, 1810 tax list The "Bicentennial Heritage of Grayson Co., VA" says George is the earliest record of a Howell in Montgomery Co., VA, but: "Two other persons named Howell, William Sr., and William, Jr., are also found on the 1815 tax list. Their relationship to George, if any, is unknown. William Howell, Sr., owned one farm on the New River at the mouth of Fox Creek, consisting of 354 acres, having thereon one dwelling house of logs and one kitchen, valued at $300. William Howell, Jr., owned one farm of 60 acres on New River, having thereon one dwelling house of logs, (18' x 16'), valued at $100." Hope this helps you some.
