Marshall PEARISBURG - Ancel Vernon Marshall, 91, of Pearisburg and formerly of Staunton and Norfolk departed this life on his heavenly voyage Jan. 27, 2007, at Kroontje Health Care Center in Blacksburg, Va. Born in Nemours, W.Va., Aug. 9, 1915, he was a son of the late Henry M. and Levada Sutphin Marshall. He was a very proud alumnus of Narrows High School and Green Wave Football, served in the CCC camps after high school graduation and served his country in the U.S. Navy for more than 28 years. Ancel served in active combat in the Pacific Theater during World War II and Korean conflict attaining the rank of chief warrant officer before his retirement in 1964. He was a member of American Legion Post 68 in Narrows and was proud of his association with his family in Marshalls Lodge on Doe Mountain in Giles County and kept the camp rocking with his wit and humor. Often called Yank by his family, he was tough as a pine knot but loved his family very much. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Keuerleber Marshall and his second wife Katie Kathleen Myres Crist Marshall; a grandson, Stephen Morse; five brothers, Marchie, Hyman, Levi, Roby and Ted Marshall; and three sisters, Dovie Boswell, Winters Sarver and June Marshall. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Diane and Larry Nunnally of Concord, Calif.; a grandson, David Morse of Oakland, Calif.; a brother Sam Marshall of Narrows; a sister, Olivia M. Kendall of Pembroke; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Entombment services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Oak Lawn Mausoleum in Staunton, Va. The family would like to thank Helen Stanley and others who made his stay at home pleasant and enjoyable and the staff in The Cove at Kroontje Center for their kind and efficient help during his stay there.
