:The Virginian-Pilot; :Jan 3, 2007; :Hampton Roads; :17 Frederick W. Harrell VIRGINIA BEACH - Frederick W. Phred Harrell, 65, died Dec. 24, 2006. Phred was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Roanoke, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Lillian Harrell and his brother, John W. Harrell. After graduating from Churchland High School in 1959 he entered into the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI/Virginia Tech). After leaving VPI/Virginia Tech, Phred entered the United States Naval Reserve as well as Norfolk Naval Shipyard apprenticeship in 1961 as a sheet metal apprentice. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to NOB as an electronics mechanic apprentice, where he finished his apprenticeship in 1965. Phred continued working in avionics at O&R (Overhaul & Repair facility), which later became known as NARF (Naval Air Rework Facility). Phred continued his federal service at the Naval Training Command and later at COMNAVAIRLANT in the late 1980s where he continued to work as a logistics management specialist until retiring with 35 years of federal service in 1996. Phred also enjoyed family, friends, fishing and spending time with the family dogs in New Hope, N.C. on the Perquimans River. Phred loved a good meal and always seemed to know where all the best little hole-in-the-wall restaurants where located. Phred is survived by his nephew, John F. Harrell of Portsmouth; cousins, Tom and Bonnie Hale of Virginia Beach; and nieces, Susan Humphry and Sheila Mathena. In addition, Phred is also survived by numerous relatives from the Harrell, Hale and Brown families and his lifelong friend, William Billy Walsh and wife Carolyn of Chesapeake. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Tom Potter and family friend Vernon Marsh at noon Friday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and at other times at his nephews residence.
