But two different ages are given (16 and 18); Mettie's mother was a Phipps and so Mettie was actually born as a Phipps; her first marriage was to a McMillan (Charlie) so if she was married at the time of the census her name should have been McMillan, not Phipps or Halsey; none of Mettie's descendants that I am in contact with have any knowledge of her ever being called Victoria, just Mettie or Beatrice. What you speculate is a very real possibility and I haven't totally discounted it. I am trying to locate a Victoria Halsey in the 1930 census or a marriage record of a Victoria Halsey and (anybody).

I have seen numerous instances where the same person is listed in two different households, either because they moved (and yes, I've seen this in less than 2 weeks apart) or because they happened to be in the other home when the censustaker was there. This happened to my own great-grandfather who was spending time with his mother when she was ill, so he is listed in both his mother's home as well as his own a month earlier. In Howard Smith's household, Mattie is listed as a sister-in-law to Howard, which makes her Hattie's sister. I don't know why her name would be Phipps unless the marital status of "single" is wrong....which happened many times if a person no longer was living with their spouse for whatever reason.

The oldest daughter in 1910, Hattie E., is now (in 1920) the wife of Howard Smith, and a Mettie B. Phipps, age 18, sister-in-law, is living with them. This is why I don't think Mattie is Mettie. If she is, why is called Mettie B. Phipps and not Halsey in the household of her sister, and who is the Victoria now showing up in the Halsey family? Mazie only had five living children in 1910, all with her, so Victoria could not have been a daughter living somewhere else in 1910. I think. Like I said this family is confusing.

I thought so too at one time but: in the 1920 census there is a Victoria, age 17, living with the Halseys and I take this to be the same person as Mattie V. - probably named Mattie Victoria. Ages would match. And in the 1920 census "Mettie B. Phipps," age 18 (Mettie was born in Jun 1902), is living with a Howard Smith and his wife Hattie E., age 21. Mettie is listed as a sister-in-law and Hattie E. is the daughter of Ben and Mazie Halsey. So I don't think Mattie V. and Mettie B. are the same person.

Halsey. Apparently Mazie and Benjamin Halsey adopted their niece, although I have not been able to locate Mettie actually living with them, or locate her using the Halsey name. In the 1920 census she is "Mettie B. Phipps" and is identified as Phipps in her obituary. Maude later married a Harvey Rutherford and their children are listed as brothers/sisters of Mettie in Mettie's obit - I suspect that Harvey Rutherford was the father of Mettie and Fairbanks Phipps (another child born to Maude before she married Harvey Rutherford).
