The first edition of The Descendants of George Holland is now available. The 823 page book records 11 generations and over 10,800 descendants of George Holland from Grayson County, Virginia. It is in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, and can be found on the Hollon/Holland section of my web page. Here is a direct link with details: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tjbarro/hollon/hollon.html I consider this book to be a "work in progress," and hopefully this is the first of many future editions. Earlier this year, I put a "stake in the ground" to set a specific date for a first edition (November 15th). I received significantly more descendant updates than expected, and unfortunately, I was not able to include as much historical information on Virginia and Kentucky that I wanted to. -- \\\|/// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) ------- oOOo-(_)-oOOo---------------------------- Timothy J. Hello: In Grayson County, James Anderson married Martha Patsy Nuckolls in 1809. They had a son James, Jr., married Mary (Polly) Ross in Grayson on Mar 4, 1830. I have another James Anderson in my line born about 1802 who married Mary (Polly) Bonham. Mary Bonham was the daughter of William Bonham and Elizabeth Williams. I descend from James and Mary's daughter Jane. I am trying to find out the parents of my James Anderson. His middle initial is possibly R. If I'm not mistaken the other James' middle initial was P. Yes, too, too close. If there are any Anderson researchers out there with any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I really have no idea on that one. I would love to have a list of the earliest Andersons in Grayson posted. Maybe we can then put some families together. Don, Stephanie has been brought to my attention that apparently the index in my copy of the book does not list every name mentioned in the book. She said someone told her that her Herringtons were on p. 133 & 138 even though they were not listed in the index. I checked; this was an article on Hale (Hale is in the index but Harrington is not.) However, on those pages it only mentions Herrington as men that the Hale daughters married. There is no other information on the name. I suspect that if a name is not in the Index, the information, if there is any at all, is not the main substance of the article. As I told Stephanie, I just check the index. I don't have time to read the entire book for every surname posted to the list. I suppose that it's possible that a later edition than mine might have a more complete index? That would be a good question for the list. Carolyn, I also am confused; one msg refers to Pioneer Families of Grayson County Virginia that was purchased from Books A Million in Dothan, AL. (for under $30.00) Another msg refers to Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County Virginia from Barnes and Noble for $6.50 plus shipping. Are there two different books with different titles? If so, my offer for lookup in Pioneer Families, etc., still stands. Sue Dotson checked my surnames in Pioneer Settlers, etc., There were none in this book. Hello, Sue, Are there any GRUBB/GRUBBS in the index? If so, approximate number. I go along with another list member -- if there are, please advise me, privately is okay, of your snail mail address if you will accept a contribution for some copies whenever you have time -- this is if you have a copy machine or scanner. Your voluntary lookups are much appreciated, but don't let them overwhelm you. I am confused. Is the book "Pioneer Settlers of Grayson Co. VA" and the book "Pioneer Families of Grayson Co. VA" one and the same? Or are we talking two different books? Don, I check the "Pioneer Settlers of Grayson Co VA" index. None of the surnames you mentioned are listed. Carolyn, If I am reading all this msg traffic correctly......about the "Pioneer Families of Grayson County", then we are going to have a problem getting access to a copy. To help defray your costs I would like to ask if you would do lookups in your copy. I would like to send you a check for five dollars if you would look up the surnames McGrady, Steele, Burke and Robinette. If there is data there then I would make it ten dollars if you would copy the applicable pages and send them to me. This is just a proposal. Hello Everyone, Is there anyone out there who has this book "Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County" and if they could tell me if there are Harrington's listed in this book. I have a chance to purchase this book, but before I do, I was wondering if there were any Harrington's listed. Thanks for the help, Stephanie Harrington [email protected]
Hello, I puchased my copy of the newer edition of " Pioneer Families of Grayson County Virginia" by ordering it through "BOOKS A MILLION" which is a large chainlike bookstore here in Dothan, Alabama.. I imaginge one could order one through them if one is nearby or through any of the larger chainlike bookstores ..ie "WALDEN BOOKS" or whatever is in one's part of the country. My copy was below $30. I have seen at our local library in the Geneaolgy department a copy or the "origininal" and made some copies of some of the book...ie, Cornetts, Hales, and the content is identical to the reprint which I purchased through "BOOKS A MILLION"> Please pass this information to the group as a whole as I have a problem with understanding how to send to the entier group... I keep trying but somehow it doesn't get through.. thanks, Carolyn (WRIGHT) Mitchell [email protected]
Interlibrary loan is your best bet. You can purchase the original, but it costs some $200+ and is not indexed. Genealogical Publishing Co.,Baltimore MD issued a later edition, which is indexed. I don't know whether it can still be purchased, but it is available from I-LL. If you order it from Barnes-Noble, you will get only a photocopy of one chapter, not the whole book. Timothy, The organization that created the book is the 1908 Courthouse Foundation. In the front of the book there is a page listing the Board of Directors, and it says "for more information call 540-773-3711." Why don't you try that number and give them your suggestion. Sounds good to me! Only thing, what web site would it be put on, and wouldn't there be a fee? If you don't get anywhere with that number, let me know and I will then forward your message to my husband's cousin. He was on the Grayson Co. Bicentennial Committee and could probably lead you to whoever you would need to talk to. Sue Dotson [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Timothy J.
