I am sorry, someone posted the answer at one list, and I didn't think of the rest of the lists. The answer is to cut and paste the URL if you can't click on it. I would like to thank everyone that given me the answer to my question about how AOL can access my site. Hi I am looking for information on John Calvin Phelps, b. 1830's. He lived in Grayson county. He married Martha Caroline Bedwell. I need specifically, info on his parents and siblings. Would also love to talk to any descendants. My family is through his sister, Rhoda. Thanks Tracy
Hi all, Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who pointed out some great sites to try and find info about my great Grandfather Peter Blevins. I appreciate all your help. Ed Cooper
Hi all, This is my first posting to this list. My name is Ed Cooper and I am looking for information on my great Grandfather Peter Blevins. According to family "lore" He was taken from Greenup County, KY in the early 1900s probably between 1900 and 1910 brought to Virginia and hung. The story goes he had killed one or more black miners. This story in different versions is told by different factions of my family who have never met. Recently one of my cousins stated he was brought to Independence where he was hung. I am located in Massachusetts so getting to Virginia is not feasible, Can anyone tell me any on line sites or places I can write to research this further, Thank you all for your time. Ed Cooper Searching for the Cooper, Blevins, Penix, Watkins and Meadows family

After posting the pictures from my grandparents' trunk, it was suggested that I use the page as a site to post pictures for others who would like to share or to see if their pictures might be recognized. This is an invitation for you to use the site for these purposes. The page was, obviously, focused on the BURCHAM and DAVIS families, their collateral lines, and friends. In order that it not become too diverse or unwieldy, I would like to keep it to families with some tie to the Grayson and Carroll Co. areas or to the Burcham and Davis families. The page is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~alanwood/burchamtrunk/trunkpics.htm Anyone wishing to add pictures to this site, send a picture file and information about it to me and I will add it to the list. If you don't have access to a scanner, make a photocopy (color works best) and snail mail it. E-mail me and I will send you my postal address. There have been a few changes to the page since I first posted it. Thanks to the cousins that have provided additional information. Been a while so I thought I would throw this back out. I am researching the above names in both Wythe and Grayson Counties. The Davis name is also in Wise Co. I am researching a Thomas Gray married to a Sarah Davis abt 1824 and eventually moved to Grayson Co. His will, which I just received, lists a daughter Betty WILLCOX. This one is new to me. He did have a daughter by the name of Mary who married a James WILCOX. Mary and James are my 2nd gr grandparents. I am trying to see if there is any connection between the Betty WILLCOX and James WILCOX. Is anyone researching WILLCOX out of these counties? Thanks. George E. Bernardine, I'm from the Simcox/Bryant family. My g-g-grandmother is Zilpha Ann, daughter of Beulah and Aaron Simcox/Simcock. I remember her daughter Martha (myg-grandmother) from my childhood. Your Isom reference leads me to think you may be descended from Zilpha's older sister Mary, who married Spencer Isom. In "Bicentennial Heritage Grayson County Virginia 1793" published in 1995 there is a rather long artcle on the Bryants. However, it shows "our" John as the son of James Jr., whereas the Quaker records show him as the son of Nicholas and Ellener Martin. This article was written by Joe C. Kirby Jr. of Galax. There is also an article on the Spencer Isom family. I started sending all this info to researchers, but was soon overwhelmed by requests, so I had to stop. However, you can probably get the book from Inter-Library Loan (it is out of print). I have the Simcox/Simcock line back to the immigrant ancestor. You can see what I have at http://rosalinda.com Go to the COLLINS line. Feel free to download for non-commercial use. We're all in this together <gg>. Best wishes, Beryl
In answer to Bernie's quiery, I have a copy of Pioneer Settlers Of Grayson County, Virginia (reprint 1982) that has listed in index: three listings of Isom, no listings for Samcox, & thirty four listings for Bryant. I had a search preformed by my home public library that found two locations of the book, but for some unknown reason the books could not be borrowed, possibly the rare books were in such a condition that prohibited the lending. Following addresses are the locations of the books; State Library of Ohio Alexandria Public Library State Office Building 717 Wueen Street 65 So. Front St. Alexandria, Virginia Colombus, Ohio 22314 43215 This trace was done in May 06, 1983. Harold
Do you find the names ISOM, SIMCOX,BRYANT in your book of pioneers in Grayson Co? Thank you for any help. Bernie [email protected] .net ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Jueves 23 de Noviembre de 2000 7:00 AM Subject: VAGRAYSO-D Digest V00 #112
HI Folks, In the book "Pioneers Settlers of Grayson County", I would very much like to know if there is mention of the Stone and/or Comer Families. My 4th G-GF, Jeremiah Stone, 1742-1827, married Susannah Comer, 1742-1809, and lived in the Elk Creek area. Any information will be apprecicated. Ronald Stone in Texas
I have a 1975 edition of the subject book. As others have noted, there are a few Herringtons in that book. I won't reiterate what others have already sent in. However, I wanted to let you know that I have another book, "Grayson County: A History in Words and Pictures", published in 1976 by the Grayson County Historical Society, compiled and edited by Bettye-Lou Fields, edited and annotated by Jene Hughes. Beginning on p305 of that book, I came across a short write-up on the "Harrington Settlement (The Bethel Community)", authored by a Mary Taylor Harrington. It is a just a few paragraphs, which I have excerpted below for your benefit: "The Bethel community on the headwaters of Elk Creek north of Buck Mountain was settled following the Revolutionary War and was first known as the Harrington Settlement. John C. Harrington arrived in 1844 and other early settlers included such names as Sage, Shuler, Cornett, Stamper, Hackler, Phipps, Long, Helms, Cooper and Golding. "Livesay Hall, located between Bethel and Central communities, was a two-story log building which served as meeting place (sic) for these early families. The lower floor was used for worship and the upper floor was a Masonic Lodge Hall. John C. Harrington was the first Mason in Grayson County and his apron is in the possession of his great-great-grandson, Charles Harrington, of Marion, Virginia. "The first pastor supplied by the Methodist Church came in 1892 and a wooden church, called the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church South, was built in 1896 on land donated by James Harrington and his wife, Martha Hale Harrington. Forty-nine years later a brick church replaced the old one on land donated by the S. Lee Shuler family. This building, complete with tables in the basement made from the pews of the old church, was dedicated in 1946 as Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in memory of the servicemen from the community serving in the first and second World Wars. "The community is justly proud of the Shuler family which has distinguished itself in the field of Methodist ministry, beginning with Phillip Loft Shuler and his brother James K. Shuler, both Methodist lay preachers. "At least five schools have been known to exist in different locations since 1844, and all were called either Harrington or Shuler. The last one was closed in the 1940's and the children were bussed to Comer's Rock or on to the high school at Elk Creek. "Stores in the community were widely scattered and usually only one was in existence at a time. The earliest one known was owned by James K. Shuler and the last by Granville Cornett. Andy Sells and W. H. Harrington both ran blacksmith shops. A gristmill was first run by John Long powered by the waterfalls on upper Elk Creek, and there were several sawmills powered by this same method. Over the years the community has been called Bethel, as the Harrington family scattered abroad and now only two families are left here by that name. This once heavily settled community now has only about twenty-eight families." On p306 of this same book, there is a picture of the William H. Harrington home, with a long caption listing the names of the people in the photo. The caption reads as follows: "This home built for William H. Harrington in 1890 is currently occupied by fifth and sixth generation descendants of John C. Harrington having been in the family since 1842. Shown in the foreground of the picture are a hitching rail and stile used by ladies to seat themselves on horse back. Shown on the porches, lower, L to R: Laura A Harrington, Annie Mae Harrington (Mrs. L. C. Christiansen), Georgia A. Harrington (Mrs. G. A. Hash), Peyton W. Harrington. Upper: Leona Poole, Cora Hash. ONly two of the once plentiful Harrington's (sic) remain in the community. They are Max and Clarence and live on land of their ancestor John C. Harrington. Other residents of the community now called Bethel who are living on land that has been in their family are S. Lee Shuler and Elmo Cornett. Photographs are not available." I would be happy to scan the picture from the book and send it to you if you like. This book was a particularly great find for me because it contains (on pp 99-124) the Civil War correspondence of my 2g-grandfather, Earl Carson Andis. It is extremely exciting to read his own words. I have a reprinted copy from 1994. In my index I have a Thomas and Phillip Herington (spelled with one "R") and a Herrington (Mr.) It also has that it has been reprinted in 1975 and 1982, with an added index. Judy Lawrence G.
