    3. This family is in the 1850 Grayson Co. Census: 2 804 894 Long John 50 M . Farmer 500 VA . . . . . 3 804 894 Long Elizabeth B. 44 F . . . NC . . . . . 4 804 894 Long Columbus F. W. 13 M . . . P. 3 M . . . VA . . . . . In the 1870 Census under the annotation notes for Martin, it says that Martin was the son of John Long and Elizabeth Howell and that John was the son of William and Catherine Long. However, according to my files, I show that Elizabeth Howell was married to a William Long, s/o William and Catherine Surface Long. The younger William is with wife Elizabeth in the 1850 census, so this must be right. I show his brother John mad. to Celia Delp, but won't swear to that marriage. Is that marriage correct? Did this John marry again? Is this John the same as the John in the family above? Or is the John in the family above another John and the son of William Long and Elizabeth Howell? Any help straightening this out would be appreciated. Sue Dotson [email protected]

    1. 1850 Census
    2. Sue Dotson
    3. I found an archived file on rootsweb that Curt Beatty submitted in 1997. It is an index of the 1850 Grayson Co. census. According to the information provided, there are Dotsons living in dwellings #834 and #1022. However, on Jeff Weaver's New River web pages for Grayson Co., the 1850 census has been transcribed. In dwelling #834 there is a MOYER family, not a DOTSON family, and there is no dwelling #1022. It only goes up to dwelling #1001. Does anyone have access to the actual 1850 census for Carroll Co. who could check and see if this information may have been for that county instead? I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. 1. Question Re: SPAM, from Daundra
    2. Dear list, I am sending this to all the lists I am on............ Are you having the same problem I am having??? SPAM and JUNK. I seem to be getting everything from credit card offers to SEX sites. I don't like it and this is a sure way to get a "bug"!!!!!!!!!! Most seem to have a fairly innocent looking sender...but if you look at the subject line you will get a clue....the sender is repeated, there are a series of numbers, or it will say "reply to John". I have sent most on to AOL but I find it irritating to say the least when my granddaughter stumbles into them. I do not go into any chat rooms or over seas sites. The out side mailing I do is to the lists. The rest is personal. So, this has to be where they are finding my add. Now if others are having the same trouble then we have it nailed down. I am not trying to stir up trouble but this really spoils the reason why we are here. And if you get a big bunch of mail it can be time consuming. SO WHO EVER YOU ARE .....BETTER STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will find you and pour water on your hard drive. Thanks for letting me spout off. Daundra in Berrien County PS..now you all know what lists I am on..think of all the times I have to hit the DEL key to kill my own note.

    3. Hi Sue! I have an unverified list of children's names for George and Elizabeth Shriver Baker but Isaac isn't listed. I also have an unverified list of George's siblings and he doesn't seem to have a brother named Isaac either. That said, the Beller and Heavin families who married into George's line did leave records in Surry County. 1. Re: Jerome W. Eskins/Eskings
    2. Sue Dotson
    3. Dave, You can check the 1870 census online, but I looked in my book and Jerome is mentioned with the family of Churchwell Wright, family #45 Old Town District. It says Sarah was the daughter of Churchwell & Melinda Wright and she was b. 1855. That means either the b. date or your marriage date has to be incorrect because she wouldn't have md. at age 11. You say she was 25 when she md. The children living with Churchwell and Melinda in the 1870 census range in age from 23 down to 2. Melinda and Churchwell are both 43. If Sarah was really 25 when she md., she would be 29 in 1870 which would mean her parents were both 14 when she was born. Sounds a little fishy. As for your request, I think it would benefit you to contact the Grayson Co. courthouse for the records you want -- unless you can find someone who would be willing to go there for you and pull them. I would do it if I was local but I'm 10 hrs away. Sorry! 1. 1870 Annotated Census
    2. Thanks Sue That bears out all that I have found so far. David evidently passed away around 1792 when Mary became head of household (land transactions) . Peter born 1765 assumed his household on Turkey Fork of Elk Creek around 1792 and sold out in 1803 moving to Russell County with Mary following 1809 right after Joseph's marriage to Elizabeth Welch. Peter finally ended up in Washngton Cty, VA after 1827 which established the Henry (1830) and Sarah Gobble Powers family. We believe the early Ashe County Powers are also descended from David and Mary maybe moving back into Grayson from NC around 1820 thus the family of William. I still have a lot of investigative work to do with placing the origin of 1870's William's family. Joseph has been well documented but the early Ashe County William, Major, and Laoma are still some of a mystery. The < 1779 information confirms their arrival before the 1781 survey. Thanks Jan

    3. All, The 1870 Annotated census is online on Jeff Weaver's New River web page. However, the last time I checked the site, the chart I mentioned was not included; only the census data and annotation notes were online. I purchased my copy of the book from the Grayson Co. Historical Society, long before the data had been placed online. Janet, to answer your question, there is a Mary and a Peter Powers listed on the chart, both shown b. <1779 and heads of households in Grayson in the 1800 census only. No David listed in the chart. There is a Peter Bowers, also b. <1779 and also 1800 census only. No Mary or David, and no Bauers. In the 1870 census itself, there is only one Powers family, in the Elk Creek District # 216: Powers, William E. 50 Farm Laborer Mary A. 44 John W. 24 Helena 21 Virginia 16 William P. 17 Lucinda 14 Mary A. 9 James M. 11 Henry W. 3 Scott, John W. 19 Farm Laborer All b. NC Annotation Notes: [It is possible, that Helena C. Powers Md. Jno. W. Scott, s/o F. H. & N. Scott 5/11/1870, though there is room for doubt.] Sue Dotson [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, July 30, 2001 6:21 PM Subject: 1870 Annotated Grayson Cty, Census > Sue > > My brickwall for the Powers family is Grayson/Montgomery.
